4 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD reading Ezekiel 37:1 14 The hand Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by spirit Lord and set me down in middle a valley; it was full bones. He led me all around m; re were very many lying in valley, and y were very dry. He said to me, Mortal, can se bones live? I answered, O Lord God, you know. Then he said to me, Prophesy to se bones, and say to m: O dry bones, hear word Lord. Thus says Lord God to se bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am Lord. So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly re was a noise, a rattling, and bones came toger, bone to its bone. I looked, and re were sinews on m, and flesh had come upon m, and skin had covered m; but re was no breath in m. Then he said to me, Prophesy to breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to breath: Thus says Lord God: Come from four winds, O breath, and brea upon se slain, that y may live. I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath came into m, and y lived, and stood on ir feet, a vast multitude. Then he said to me, Mortal, se bones are whole house Israel. They say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut f completely. Therefore prophesy, and say to m, Thus says Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to land Israel. And you shall know that I am Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; n you shall know that I, Lord, have spoken and will act, says Lord. Reader Hear what Spirit is saying to God s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. psalm Psalm 130 Peter R. Hallock ( ) The choir introduces antiphon, all repeat it. The choir chants psalm verses, all repeating antiphon as indicated. Organ: Everyone: De prundis Out depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; * let your ears consider well voice my supplication. ANTIPHON 2 If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, * O Lord, who could stand? 3 For re is forgiveness with you; * refore you shall be feared. ANTIPHON With LORD re is mercy; with him re is plenteous redemption. 3 4

5 4 I wait for Lord; my soul waits for him; * in his word is my hope. 5 My soul waits for Lord, more than watchmen for morning, * more than watchmen for morning. ANTIPHON 6 O Israel, wait for Lord, * for with Lord re is mercy; 7 With him re is plenteous redemption, * and he shall redeem Israel from all ir sins. ANTIPHON reading Romans 8:6 11 To set mind on flesh is death, but to set mind on Spirit is life and peace. For this reason mind that is set on flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God s law indeed it cannot, and those who are in flesh cannot please God. But you are not in flesh; you are in Spirit, since Spirit God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have Spirit Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though body is dead because sin, Spirit is life because righteousness. If Spirit him who raised Jesus from dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. Reader Hear what Spirit is saying to God s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. sequence hymn 1. O 3. For 6. 6 holy gospel John 11:1 45 Deacon The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Assembly Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus Bethany, village Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was one who anointed Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her bror Lazarus was ill. So sisters sent a message to Jesus, Lord, he whom you love is ill. But when Jesus heard it, he said, This illness does not lead to death; rar it is for God s glory, so that Son God may be glorified through it. Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in place where he was. Then after this he said to disciples, Let us go to Judea again. The disciples said to him, Rabbi, Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going re again? Jesus answered, Are re not twelve hours daylight? Those who walk during day do not stumble, because y see light this world. But those who walk at night stumble, because light is not in m. After saying this, he told m, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going re to awaken him. The disciples said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right. Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but y thought that he was referring merely to sleep. Then Jesus told m plainly, Lazarus is dead. For your sake I am glad I was not re, so that you may believe. But let us go to him. Thomas, who was called Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console m about ir bror. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my bror would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask him. Jesus said to her, Your bror will rise again. Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in resurrection on last day. Jesus said to her, I am resurrection and life. Those who believe in me, even though y die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? She said to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that you are Messiah, Son God, one coming into world. When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, The Teacher is here and is calling for you. And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to village, but was still at place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because y thought that she was going to tomb to weep re. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my bror would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So Jews said, See how he loved him! But some m said, Could not he who opened eyes blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away stone. Martha, sister dead man, said to him, Lord, already re is a stench because he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see glory God? So y took away stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Far, I 6

7 thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for sake crowd standing here, so that y may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to m, Unbind him, and let him go. Many Jews refore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. Deacon The Gospel Lord.
