1 The Carillon Volume December, articles to: My Dear Friends in Christ, A true story is told about a church where a very wealthy man rose to tell the rest of those present about his Christian Faith. I m a millionaire. He said, and I attribute my wealth to the blessings of God in my life. I have worked all my life and now God has blessed me. He has given me this gift and I return it as I ought. He went on to recall the turning point of his faith. As a young man he had just earned his first dollar, and he went to a church. At that meeting was an Episcopal monk who discussed his work. At the time of the offering to go to the work of this missionary, the wealthy man knew that he would either have to give a tithe to God or nothing at all. How did he know it? He knew it as being right in his heart of hearts. So at that moment he decided to give a portion of himself he had to God. Looking back he knew that God had blessed that decision and had made him wealthy. When he had finished his story in the church, there was an awed silence. As he moved to his seat and sat down, a little old lady leaned over to him and said: I dare you to do it again. When we start out it is easy to remember that the gifts and opportunities we are given are from God. But something happens along the way. We forget who the owner is. We come to think of the vineyard of our life as something we own, rather than stewards over. I think each of us needs to take the the dare to do it again in our financial stewardship response for the mission and ministry of Caroline Church for I have asked the vestry to commit themselves and to lead our parish into giving back to God what is God s. As Rector, Wardens and Vestry we acknowledge that God is the owner of his vineyard here in Setauket. I continue to give the biblical and Episcopal Church standard of a tithe, giving back 10% for our ministry here at Caroline, the vestry has committed to give back a proportional tithe to the Lord, and I encourage each of you to do the same. We thank God for blessing us, our families, this great parish and all the sacrificial gifts we have given throughout the year to Caroline and to other charitable organizations. God has richly blessed us and we say thank you in our stewardship of time, talent, and money of this great vineyard Our Lord has placed us in. Striving to reflect the generosity of our Savior, Cn. 2 Our Anglican Heritage Thomas Becket Thomas Becket was born in around 1120, the son of a prosperous London merchant. He was well educated and quickly became an agent to Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury, who sent him on several missions to Rome. In Medieval England the Church was all powerful. The fear of going to Hell was very real and people were told that only the Catholic Church could save your soul so that you could go to Heaven. The head of the Catholic Church was the pope based in Rome. The most important position in the church in Medieval England was the Archbishop of Canterbury and both he and the king usually worked together. A king of England could not remove a pope from his position but popes claimed that they could remove a king by excommunicating him this meant that the king s soul was condemned to Hell and people then had the right to disobey the king. For people in England, there was always the real problem do you obey the king or the pope? In fact, this was rarely a problem as both kings and popes tended to act together as both wanted to remain powerful. On two occasions they fell out one involved the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, and the other Henry VIII. In 1162, Henry II, king of England, appointed Thomas Becket, as Archbishop of Canterbury. This was the most important religious position in England. No-one was surprised by Henry s choice as both he and Thomas were very good friends. They enjoyed hunting, playing jokes and socializing together. Becket was known to be a lover of wine and a good horse rider. Henry II loved to ride as well but his personality was troubled by his fearsome temper. He tried to keep his temper under control by working very hard as it distracted him from things that might sparked off his temper. Henry II also controlled a lot of France at this time. William the Conqueror had been his great-grandfather and he had inherited his French territories as a result of this. When Henry was in France sorting out problems there, he left Becket in charge of England such was his trust in him. Becket became Henry s chancellor the most important position in England after the king. When the Archbishop of Canterbury died in 1162, Henry saw the chance to give his close friend even more power by appointing him Archbishop of Canterbury the most important church position in England. Why would Henry do this? In Henry s reign, the Church had its own courts and any member of the Church could decide to be tried in a Church court rather than a royal court. Church courts usually gave out easier punishments to churchmen who had done wrong. Henry believed that this undermined his authority. As king, he was concerned that England was becoming too lawless there was too much crime. He believed that Church courts did not set a good example as they were too soft on offenders. For example, a royal court would blind or cut off the hand of a thief; a Church court might send a thief on a pilgrimage. Henry hoped that by appointing his good friend Becket, he might have more of a say in how the Church punished offenders. He hoped that Becket would do as he wished and toughen up the sentences passed out by Church courts. Becket did not want the job. As chancellor, he was as powerful as he wished to be. He also had an excellent relationship with Henry, and he did not want to spoil this. In fact, on being offered the post, Becket wrote to Henry that our friendship will turn to hate. However, Henry persuaded Becket and he agreed in 1162 to the appointment. His letter was indeed to become prophetic. The post of Archbishop changed Becket. He dropped his luxurious lifestyle; he ate bread and drank water, he had a luxury bed but preferred to sleep on the floor; he wore the rich clothes of an archbishop, but underneath the fine tunics he wore a horse hair shirt very itchy and unpleasant to wear. He gave his expensive food to the poor. In 1164, the first sign of a split between Henry and Thomas occurred. Henry passed a law which stated that any person found guilty in a Church court would be punished by a royal court. Becket refused to agree to this, and knowing of Henry s temper, he fled abroad to France for his own safety. It took six years before Becket felt safe enough to return to England. However, they quickly fell out again when Becket asked the pope to excommunicate the Archbishop of York who had taken sides with the king. This was a very serious request and a very serious punishment for someone who could claim that he was only being loyal to the king. Henry was furious when he found out what Becket had done. He is said to have shouted out will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest? Four knights heard what Henry had shouted and took it to mean that the king wanted Becket dead. They rode to Canterbury to carry out the deed. The knights were Reginald FitzUrse, William de Tracey, Hugh de Morville and Richard le Breton. On December 29th 1170 they killed Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. After killing him, one of the knights said Let us away. He will rise no more. Becket was made a saint in 1173 and his shrine in Canterbury Cathedral became an important focus for pilgrimage. The Anglican Church remembers him and his ministry every December 29. 2

For further information contact Elaine Cash, Youth Group Leader, at (631) Cursillo conference lights up lay people with the spirit Presiding Bishop says ministry is a gift to the Church October 27, 2016 [Cursillo press release] Episcopal Cursillo Ministry (ECM) held its annual conference Oct , hosted by the Diocese of Long Island and welcoming more than 130 representatives from dioceses throughout the U.S. plus Barbados and the Bahamas. Cursillo helps develop lay leaders for the church by rejuvenating their zeal and driving them to greater Christian community involvement, senior Episcopal leaders said, according to a Cursillo press release. When I look to see where the spirit is moving and Episcopalians are lit up with the love of Christ and each other, I know to look to Cursillo, said Presiding Bishop Michael Curry in a written statement. This ministry is such a gift to the Episcopal Church, and never more than in this moment as we seek to follow our Lord s call into the Jesus Movement. Cursillo, a short course in Christian living, refers to a threeday weekend event led by lay people. Comprising 15 talks and five meditations on topics such as piety, study and Christian community action, Cursillo renews participants enthusiasm for their faith and helps develop them as leaders in their home churches, the release said. Cursillo started in the Roman Catholic Church in Mallorca, Spain, in the 1940s, and has been a ministry of the Episcopal Church for 50 years. Clergy serve as spiritual directors on Cursillo weekends, but lay people lead most of the talks and other activities. The talks focus on the fourth day in other words, how participants will put their faith into action for the rest of their lives, after the threeday weekend. The Rev. Winnie Varghese, a nationally renowned writer and activist who leads social justice ministries at Trinity Church Wall Street, New York City, emphasized the role of the laity in her keynote address to the conference. In the end, the church is the lay people, and God comes to the church through lay people, not through institutions, Varghese said. Lay people way outnumber the clergy. If we are dragging you into institutions that you don t like, then we are failing. Long Island Bishop Lawrence Provenzano also stressed the importance of the laity. The unconditional love of Jesus is the basis for everything you do in Cursillo, Provenzano told the crowd. I depend on Cursillo to infect our parishes with the Spirit so that we can all be a stronger witness to Christ s love. Bishop Martin Field of the Diocese of West Missouri, recently appointed the ECM liaison to the House of Bishops, added that Cursillo helps parishioners turn their attention to the needs of people outside the church, rather than focusing inward. It doesn t do much good to go to a doctor s office and watch him take his own temperature. We tend to do too much of that in the church, he said. ECM has active chapters in all nine provinces of the church. Since its inception Cursillo has become an important ministry on every continent. You are here because something has transformed your life, Varghese said at the conference. The gospel tells us that you are called to go share that good news. Focus on the message, not the institution, she said. What you all do is about the Spirit, right? she asked. You have that gift among you. I hope it drives you out in the world not to sign up more people for Cursillo but to bring Christ s love to the world.
