3 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Presiding Priest Presiding Priest The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. THE WORD OF GOD THE FIRST READING (seated) Isaiah 25:6-9 READER: A Reading from the Book of Isaiah On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of wellaged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. THE RESPONSE (remain seated) Psalm 24 1 The earth is the LORD'S and all that is / in it, * the world and all who dwell there\in. 2 For it is he who founded it upon the /seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the \ deep. 3 "Who can ascend the hill of the / LORD? * and who can stand in his holy \ place?" 4 "Those who have clean hands and a pure / heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a \ fraud. 5 They shall receive a blessing from the / LORD * and a just reward from the God of their \ salvation." 6 Such is the generation of those who / seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of \ Jacob. (continued on page 4) - 3 -

4 7 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting / doors; * and the King of glory shall come \ in. 8 "Who is this King of / glory?" * "The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in \ battle." 9 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting / doors; * and the King of glory shall come \ in. 10 "Who is he, this King of / glory?" * "The LORD of hosts, he is the King of \ glory." THE SECOND READING Revelation 21:1-6a READER: A Reading from the Revelation to John I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end." Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. HYMN (standing as able) Who are these like stars appearing HYMNAL 286 THE GOSPEL John 11:32-44 The Priest or Deacon reads the Gospel, first saying The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Christ

5 THE SERMON (seated) Dennis Tierney THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS (standing as able) (BCP p. 292) Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. The Celebrant concludes the Renewal of Vows as follows May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen

PRESENTATION ANTHEM (standing as able) Please stand as able as the bread and wine and money we offer to God for our nourishment and the life of the world are brought forward and presented at the altar. The following anthem is sung by all. Alles ist an Gottes Segen - 7 -

8 The people remain standing as able. The Presiding Priest faces them and sings or says Then, facing the Holy Table, the Presiding Priest proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Land of Rest The Presiding Priest continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Presiding Priest is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated

9 On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Presiding Priest continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The Presiding Priest continues And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, THE LORD S PRAYER (Traditional) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. ACCLAMATION AFTER THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Choir, then all: John L. Bell - 9 -

This is a chance to meet other parishioners informally and enjoy the hospitality of the St. Barnabas congregation STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN The fall stewardship campaign has begun! It is the time of the year when we seek the financial resources we need to continue our missional work in Many of you have participated in these campaigns for many years and you know the general purpose and outline of our work in stewardship. In previous years, we have come close to our goals but often had to do a second ask or put on a fund-raiser of some sort to make our budgetary goals. In the past two years, we have not had to do that to the great relief of vestry members and many congregants. This year, we seek additional funds to offer our hard-working staff a real raise in compensation of 5%. Thus, our goal for pledges this year is $386,000. All other expenses remain the same or have been adjusted only for inflation such that our overall budget is about the same as last year apart from salary costs. We have also made some financial changes to make our funds work harder by moving more funds into the Diocesan Investment Fund where returns are higher than in bank savings accounts. We have also made changes to our lighting system to make our facility safer but also more energy efficient, thus keeping utility costs down. We would love to have this year s stewardship campaign take no more than four or five weeks. In past years, we have been seeking

13 commitments for support well into the New Year which makes adopting a budget very difficult. We ask that you prayerfully consider your support for Saint Barnabas and make your pledge accordingly and swiftly. You should have now received our stewardship letter from Helene Schmitz, our Stewardship Chair. It contains confidential information about your current year pledge, if you made one, and some suggestions for increasing your pledge in Again, it will be possible to pledge online, through your favorite credit card, and by auto withdrawal from your bank account. Julie Houck is available to help you make your pledge payments according to your preference. We truly want to make this contribution effortless. Our primary goal is to have financial resources necessary to continue our work among our members, in the community, and out into the whole world. As Saint Barnabas enters into its seventh decade of worship and service, we rejoice in those who prepared the way for us, and we seek to emulate their strong commitment to the Good News of God in Christ on our lovely island. Dennis+ WORSHIP TONIGHT OFFICE OF COMPLINE 8PM The Men's Compline Choir of Bainbridge Island sings the Office of Compline at 8pm the first Sunday of each month. Compline, also called Night Prayer, is the last of the traditional daily services sung by monastic communities and dates back to at least the 8th century. The service consists of chant, readings, psalms, prayers, petitions and hymns, sung in a contemplative setting in a darkened church. All are welcome. NEXT WEEK OFFICE OF EVENSONG NOV 7 6PM Women s Schola Nova sings the Office of Evensong at 6pm on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Come hear traditional plainsong, anthems, psalms and chants. Let the grace of sung prayer refresh you for the week to come. Next Service: November 6pm. ALL SAINTS DAY Today, November 1, we will celebrate all the saints in our lives by remembering them in song and prayer. Please join us by remembering those you love but see in this world no longer. We will conclude our service in the Interium with song and prayer. Dennis+ MISSED A SERMON OR WANT TO HEAR IT AGAIN? OR SHARE IT WITH A FRIEND? CHRISTIAN ACTION CHAPLAINS ON THE HARBOR Outreach Effort continues for Chaplains on the Harbor Grays Harbor County Nov 1-15 The outreach ministry directed by the Rev. Sarah Monroe and, titled "Chaplains on the Harbor" is continuing to be supported by the Outreach Committee of St. Barnabas. The ministry works to meet the spiritual and everyday needs of the many homeless and needy in the depressed Aberdeen/Westport area. Chaplains on the Harbor is a ministry that is endorsed by our Episcopal Diocese in Olympia and our Bishop Greg Rickel. Since our request for seasonal items and dry goods from the congregation last Spring, the Outreach committee continues to support Chaplains on the Harbor. St. Barnabas has helped the ministry with a $600 check to help buy a new freezer, carloads of food and dry goods, lots of prayer and recently a check for $500 to assist with the ministry. We continue to be impressed with Sarah's passion for her Chaplains on the Harbor mission and her leadership to work with and through the communities of Aberdeen and Westport. Dennis has invited the Rev. Sarah Monroe to come to St. Barnabas on November 15. Starting this week, the congregation will again have an opportunity to show their individual support by bringing items on the list to the Chaplains on the Harbor box in the Parlor. The Outreach committee will deliver the items to Aberdeen and Westport for Sarah to use in her ministry. Contact Steve Schmitz esallen1zero5@gmail.com.
