1 October Commitment Campaign cluded October 22 Philippians 2:1-11 If you ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ then do me a favor: agree with love be each other, each deep-spirited other, friends. Being a Disciples clergy woman I know the importance in finding the church that feels right, and feeds my soul. As I have stepped away from serving a local congregation, Community has been my resting place giving me the opportunity to BE with God again and in fellowship with others. Yes, we drive from Liberty each week. Yes, there are Disciple congregations closer to home. But none of them feed our souls like Community and when I miss a Sunday I feel it deeply. The light of my calling has been rekindled and new energy is bringing my faith back to front and center. Sondra Bowers In 1991 Laura and I found a church that did not want you to check your brains at the door. People who loved God and who were on different sides of big issues. People that treasured the past but looked to the future. People that welcome the stranger. People that realize all who wander are not lost. Today I am included in Community Christian Church because I m glad to be with people that try to make today better than yesterday and tomorrow better than both. 2 Our commitment campaign is well underway and I just wanted to say a special thank you to the more than 50 households who have already turned in their financial pledge for We are seeing positive results, with increased overall pledges from The finance committee reviewed a first draft of the 2018 budget this last week and we are committed to sound financial stewardship. That's why just like with your own personal budgets it's important for the church to know what income to expect. An annual giving pledge from each of us gives the church a guide as to the funds that will be available for the coming year. I hope you will help us continue to employ good financial practices by saying, "I'm in" with your financial commitment for the coming year. The membership will have an opportunity to review the budget prior to the Congregational Meeting on November 19th. As the committee has begun our work it is exciting that we have a great place from which to start. Our 2017 financials at the end of the third quarter continue to be positive. Our investment income from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation has exceeded our expectations and we are grateful that thanks to your generosity our year to date pledges and offerings are above what we budgeted. These are all hopeful indicators as we plan for next year. If you have not yet returned your pledge card, I hope you will bring it Sunday or complete one on-line by using this link. As Rev. Shanna continues to remind us, this campaign is more than about pledges and money. It s also an opportunity to grow stronger as a congregation so that we can meet the spiritual needs of each member as well as the folks in our city who are seeking a community such as ours. As always, if you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact either myself or Community's business administrator, Levon Weaver. And thanks again for your continued commitment to our Community! Tom Cranshaw Treasurer Each week during our commitment campaign, we are sharing together in a unison prayer. Together, we are grounding in prayer our commitments to deeper relationships with God and one another. We hope you will include this prayer as a part of your personal devotional time this week: Embracing, encouraging, enfolding God, our hearts find their meaning in you. Make our joy complete as you make us of the same mind and love as Jesus. Each day we ask your strength be with us as we offer your hope in ever widening circles, including and affirming all as beloved of you. Equip us with gifts of empathy, listening and mutuality, and empower each voice in this Community as we seek to live in a manner worthy of the gospel of Jesus. Help us stand firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the sake of the gospel. For you, Almighty Includer, have given to us this sacred privilege of struggling in faith together. Amen. 3 cluded spired Jazz Vespers October 25 6 pm Bonfils Chapel We had another great service on Wednesday night! This last week there was something for everyone: homemade pecan and pumpkin pies as well as apple pie, pineapple upside down cake, and cheesecake. And three pots of homemade soup. Next Sunday, October 29 10:30 am Be sure to stay afterward for Jack Weaver's shower! Those in attendance had so much fun they decided to kick it up a notch next week and have a taco bar fiesta. Rumor has it there will be peach cobbler and tres leches cake. And of course, and we'll have some prayer, some quiet, and some music. Food for body and soul. Midwest Chamber Ensemble Sunday, October 29 7:30 pm Sanctuary Back by popular demand! 17 signs available please check with the office to pick one up! Sound off! We've had a great deal of positive feedback from last Sunday regarding the extensive work done to increase the sound quality in the Sanctuary. As we mentioned last week, Jon Conard, Community's Sound Engineer, and Levi Holgstrum of Sight and Sound Innovations spent an entire day fine tuning the sound system. The under balcony speakers were rewired and re-tuned to give us a louder, crisper sound. Jon and Levi worked with Rev. Shanna, Rev. Suzanne, and Rev. Ryan to tune their lapel mics to their voices. If you weren't with us Sunday, I hope that this Sunday you will make a special effort to notice a difference in the sound levels in the Sanctuary. Choir Director John Stafford will be directing the choir at this event. The Steeple of Light Gallery presents Also, if you are in need of hearing assist items for the 10:30 service, make sure to visit Jon Conard in the sound booth (balcony) before 10:15 a.m. so that he can get you set up. We have hearing assist devices that work with your current hearing aid or without a hearing aid at all. Any sound issues or comments can be sent to me at the office. Thanks to everyone for your patience! Levon Weaver Business Administrator levon@community-christian.org This American Life by Mollie Blackburn Friday, October 26 Sunday, October 29

7 Scripture for Sunday, October 22 Say: The scripture reading today is Philippians 2:1-11 (The Message) Listen for God to speak: If you ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don t push your way to the front; don t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set OVER ->
8 aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death and the worst kind of death at that a crucifixion. Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth even those long ago dead and buried will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father. you saw me face and now hear that I m still facing. Reader: The Word of God for the people of God. Community: Thanks be to God.
