2 Dear Knights and Ladies, During the liturgical season of Lent of 2018, let us all join our hearts and voices together in prayer for the Christians and all people in the Holy Land by participating in this Lenten Continuous Novena for the Holy Land. Please begin the Novena on Ash Wednesday and follow the attached Novena Calendar by praying the daily novena prayers for the Intention of the Day (pages 5-7 below) for each day until Good Friday, the last day of the Novena. If you are unable to pray the Novena for all 45 days, please at least pray one of the 9-day Novena blocks. The Calendar is provided so that we are able to pray with a unified voice to Heaven for the same intentions on each day of the Novena. May we use participation in this Lenten Novena as an opportunity for personal sanctification and to offer prayers and sacrifices for our suffering brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. 4 Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Western Lieutenancy 2018 Lenten Continuous Novena for the Holy Land Daily Novena Prayers & Intentions Sign of the Cross In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Opening Prayer (Inspired by Psalm 122:6-9, Acts 1:1-11) Heavenly Father, through your Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord, the Prince of Peace, we, the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, pray for the peace of Jerusalem: let the Prince of Peace return there and bring peace within her walls and prosperity within her gates. And, for the sake of our brethren living in the Holy Land and for all the pilgrims who travel there, we pray now that they may find His peace within her. And, for the sake of the house of the Lord our God, we seek that His kingdom reigns over you, O Jerusalem. Intentions of the Day Most Blessed Virgin Mary, we humbly implore and beseech you to intercede for your suffering and persecuted children and the entire Church of God in the Holy Land. Please send angels to protect and watch over them and deliver them from all harm and evil, and we ask for your continuous intercession with your Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord, for: a) the Intention of the Day - (Determine the Novena Day # for today s date from the Novena Calendar and then recite the corresponding Intention of the Day, found on pages 5-7); b) the intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, the Grand Master of the EOSHJ, Cardinal Edwin O Brien, and the Apostolic Administrator of Jerusalem, Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and that they may lead the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre to do God s Will in and for the Holy Land; c) and [your personal intentions]

5 Prayer to Our Lady Queen of Palestine O Mary Immaculate, gracious Queen of Heaven and of Earth, behold us prostrate before thy exalted throne. Full of confidence in thy goodness and in thy boundless power, we beseech thee to turn a pitying glance upon Palestine, which, more than any other country belongs to thee; since thou hast graced it with thy birth, thy virtues and thy sorrows; and from there hast given the Redeemer to the world. Remember, especially, that there you were constituted our tender Mother, the dispenser of graces. Watch, therefore, with special protection over thy native country, dispel from it the shades of error, for it was there that the Son of Eternal Justice shone. Bring about the speedy fulfillment of the promise, which issued from the lips of thy Divine Son, that there should be one fold and one Shepherd. Obtain for us all that we may serve the Lord in sanctity and justice during all the days of our life, so that, by the merits of Jesus and with thy motherly aid, we may pass at last from this earthly Jerusalem to the splendors of the heavenly one. Amen. The Rosary* For all these intentions, we offer this Rosary (with the Mystery of the day, including the Memorare in the closing prayers.) [If time does not permit the full Rosary, you may say one decade instead.] Prayers for the Holy Father For the intentions of the Holy Father: one Our Father and one Hail Mary Concluding Prayer O Jerusalem, May the Lord bless you and keep you, May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. Deus lo Vult! * If you are praying the Rosary in a family, a gathering of Knights and Ladies of the Order, or individually in a Church, you may set your intention to gain a Plenary Indulgence on the fulfillment of the usual conditions, or a Partial Indulgence if the all conditions for a Plenary Indulgence are not met. The indulgence may be gained for oneself or for the departed

6 2017 Lenten Continuous Novena for the Holy Land Novena Intentions Day Intention of the Day For the Church of the Holy Land - that the Church may be a witness to the suffering, death, and resurrection of the Lord; and that the Church preaches, with words if necessary, repentance and forgiveness of sins because peace is reconciliation with God and therefore with one another. Inspired by: Luke 24:46-49 For the Patriarchs, Bishops, Priests and Religious of the Holy Land - that the leaders of the Church be consecrated in the truth of God s Word and Love; and that they lead those who believe to be one, as Jesus and the Father are one. Inspired by: John 17:19-23 For all the faithful in the Holy Land - that God s people will live as God s children and share as heirs with Christ in his sufferings; and that they may have hope in the glory awaiting them in the midst of their pains and trials. Inspired by: Romans 8:15-18 For the Jewish People in the Holy Land

7 that the Jewish people continue to seek and find the fulfillment of their hope as they live the covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and that they would be a blessing to those who find reconciliation in the life of the Risen Lord. Inspired by: Romans 11 For the Muslims in the Holy Land - that the God who blessed Ishmael, their forefather, may reconcile them with the other children of Abraham; and that their submission to God s will may lead them to know Jesus Christ as Lord of lords. Inspired by: Genesis 16 and 17 For the victims of violence, conflict and war in the Holy Land - that these victims may have faith in the victory that Jesus won through His cross; and that they are not tempted to resort to violence and hatred of their aggressors in the knowledge that the struggle is not against flesh and blood. Inspired by: Ephesians 6:12 For the rulers, governments and political leaders in the Holy Land - that the rulers and governors of the lands may live and exercise their authority and power with respect to God and men; and that they, called to collaborate with God, work towards the peace which only Our Lord can give. Inspired by: 1 Timothy 2:1-4 For the refugees and others who leave the Holy Land

8 that the refugees and the displaced will find a welcome home wherever they may go, as they imitate the Holy Family when they too fled the Holy Land; and that those who emigrate will not forget their suffering neighbors who remained, and will actively support them. Inspired by: Matthew 2:13-23 For those who pilgrim to the Holy Land - that they may be led to find the suffering Lord amidst the memorials of the Lord s life and work in the Holy Land; and that they be granted Jesus love and nearness as they too face Jesus trial: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me!
