3 Welcome to St. James Cathedral! This service is from the 1662 English Book of Common Prayer which has been the basis of Evensong liturgies in the Anglican and Episcopal family ever since. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, seeking to simplify the pattern of seven-fold daily prayer,created Evensong out of Vespers and Compline. The two canticles which are the high-point of the service celebrate Christ s Incarnation: Mary s song of joy we call the Magnificat and Simeon s song of revelation, the Nunc Dimittis. We are particularly grateful to welcome the Rev. Dr. William Sachs, Executive Director of the Center for Interfaith Reconciliation at St. Stephen s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia. In that work, he develops educational programs on understanding and engaging constructively with Muslims and members of other faiths. He was previously vice-president of the Episcopal Church Foundation and has served as a parish priest in Virginia, Connecticut, and Chicago. Unlike celebrations of Holy Communion, Evensong does not involve much congregational participation. You are invited to stand, kneel, or sit where indicated as you are able, and allow the profound beauty of spoken and sung Scripture to bring you deeper into God's presence. FIRST READING A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Malachi. (3:1 5) Thus says the Lord, See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.

9 And the child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. Please stand and hold your candle as the Dean prays BLESSING OF CANDLES Lord God, the springing source of everlasting light, bless these candles and make them holy. Pour into the hearts of thy faithful people the brilliance of thine eternal splendor, that we, who by these flames light up this temple to thy glory, may have the darkness of our souls dispelled and so be counted worthy to stand before thee in that eternal temple where thou liveth and reigneth, one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. VOLUNTARY Marche Religieuse, Op. 107 Camille Saint-Saëns ( ) MUSIC NOTES Bach s Cantata 82 for solo baritone is an exposition on the Presentation of Jesus (Candlemas), particularly the Nunc Dimittis, the song Simeon sang as he beheld the Christ child. The cantata opens with a sigh motive reminiscent of Erbarme dich from Bach s St. Matthew Passion, foreshadowing both Simeon s death and Christ s crucifixion. The central and longest aria, Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen is an extended lullaby punctuated by dramatically effective moments of still silence. The cantata ends with a joyful dance celebrating the end of life s suffering. While this interpretation of our mortality may seem a tad macabre to our modern sensibilities, it serves as a window to a time when death was all around. Bach s first wife and several of his children died, and we can hear the emotional impact this had on his music of the time. Perhaps this enabled Bach to empathize with Simeon s serenity and joy at the time of his departure. 17
