Welcome to St. James Cathedral! Whether you are here for the first time or are a regular worshipper, we are delighted to have you with us. If you are new to us and you would like to learn about the mission and ministry of the cathedral, or you would like us to be in contact with you, please complete one of the visitor cards available in the pews. You can place the card in the offering plate or hand it to an usher or member of the clergy. This order of service is designed to help you participate in today s liturgy. This booklet contains everything needed for this service. Children in Worship We welcome your children to participate in our worship. We have created an open space to the front right of the pews for young ones to play under your supervision. Today s children are tomorrow s adult worshippers, and we genuinely value their presence. Holy Communion We offer God s gracious gift of Holy Communion to all who wish to receive it. If you prefer to receive a blessing, come forward and cross your arms over your chest. Please follow the direction of the ushers when it is time to come forward and let the priest know if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. We are also happy to bring Communion to people in the pews if you are concerned about being able to come to the altar rail. Please let an usher know if this would be helpful for you. Parking On Sundays, reduced-rate parking is available at R.O.W. Parking Garage, 50 E. Ohio, for $3 for up to six hours from the time of entering the garage. Discounts are also available for all-day parking at Ohio Ontario Self Park, 33 W. Ontario for $9. To receive a reduced-rate parking voucher, please go to the Welcome Center desk following the service. For your information Restrooms are in the Welcome Center connected to the east end of the cathedral and below the narthex at the Wabash Avenue entrance of the church. And we hope you will stay for refreshments after the service! The Very Rev. Dominic Barrington, Dean of the Cathedral 2

OPENING ACCLAMATION Presider Blessed be the One, Holy, and Living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. The Presider welcomes the assembled people to the liturgy and introduces the Prayers of Penitence. PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Reader We confess to you our selfishness and lack of love: fill us with your Spirit. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Reader We confess to you our fear and failure in sharing our faith: fill us with your Spirit. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Reader We confess to you our stubbornness and lack of trust: fill us with your Spirit. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Presider pronounces God s forgiveness in a prayer of absolution. GLORIA Words: Edwin Le Grice ( ) Music: Woodlands, Walter Greatorex ( ), alt. 4

COLLECT OF THE DAY Presider Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Your sovereign rule, O God, draws near to us in the person of Jesus your Son. Your word summons us to faith; your power transforms our lives. Free us to follow in Christ s footsteps, so that neither human loyalty nor earthly attachment may hold us back from answering your call. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING A Reading from the Book of Jonah. (3:1 5, 10) The Lord told Jonah to go to that great city of Nineveh and preach his message of doom. Jonah obeyed the Lord and went to Nineveh. The city was so big that it took three days just to walk through it. After walking for a day, Jonah warned the people, Forty days from now, Nineveh will be destroyed! They believed God s message and set a time when they would go without eating to show their sorrow. Then everyone in the city, no matter who they were, dressed in sackcloth. When God saw that the people had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Contemporary English Version (CEV) Copyright 2005 by American Bible Society Our children are invited to assist in the procession of the Gospel book. As the Deacon carries the Gospel book past the play area and forward in the main aisle, all children are encouraged to come out of their pews to join in the procession. The children are welcome to gather around the Deacon as the Gospel is read. 5

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Music: Caribbean traditional, arr. John L. Bell (b. 1949) HOLY GOSPEL Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. (1:14 20) Glory to you, Lord Christ. After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, preaching the Good News from God. He said, The right time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Change your hearts and lives and believe the Good News! When Jesus was walking by Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the lake because they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, Come follow me, and I will make you fish for people. So Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him. Going a little farther, Jesus saw two more brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. Jesus immediately called them, and they left their father in the boat with the hired workers and followed Jesus. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Holy Bible, New Century Version. Copyright 2005 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. SERMON The Very Rev. Dominic Barrington Dean of the Cathedral 6

GREAT THANKSGIVING Presider Presider Presider Reader God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Why is it right to give thanks and praise? Listen, and we will hear. Lord of all life, you created the universe, where all living things reflect your glory. You give us this great and beautiful earth, to discover and to cherish. You give us friends and families, busy streets for young and old, the life of an earthly city fulfilled in your city to come. You made us all, each wonderfully different, to join with the angels and sing your praise: sing. We thank you, loving Father, because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son. He gave his life for us on the cross and shows us the way to live. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us Christ s body and his blood. Reader Why do we share this bread and wine? Listen, and we will hear. On the night before he died, when darkness had fallen, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying: This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying: This is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life. As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit, and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Savior. 9

sing. Reader Why do we follow Jesus Christ? Because he is God s saving love in action. Help us, Father, to love one another, as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended, and all creation is gathered in your loving arms. And now with all your saints we give you glory, through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit, today and for ever. sing. LORD S PRAYER The Presider introduces the Lord s Prayer. Hymnal S119 10

Music: Plainsong; adapt. Charles Winifred Douglas ( ) BREAKING OF THE BREAD sing. The Presider says The Gifts of God for the People of God. We offer God s gracious gift of Holy Communion to all those present who wish to receive it. If you prefer simply to receive a blessing, come forward and indicate so by crossing your arms over your chest. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, please let the priest know. 11

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Please stand. The Presider says Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Choristers sings COMMUNION ANTHEM A New Year Carol Benjamin Britten ( ) Here we bring new water from the well so clear, for to worship God with this happy New Year. Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine; The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine. Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her toe, open you the West Door, and turn the Old Year go. Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her chin, open up the East Door, and let the New Year in. Please stand. POST-COMMUNION HYMN 12
