2 WELCOME TO ADVENT Advent is a season of expectation and preparation, as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming (adventus) of Christ in his incarnation, and also looks ahead to his final advent as judge at the end of time. The readings and liturgies not only direct us towards Christ s birth, they also challenge the modern reluctance to confront the theme of divine judgement: Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty. (Charles Wesley) The Four Last Things Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell have been traditional themes for Advent meditation. The characteristic note of Advent is therefore expectation, rather than penitence, although the character of the season is easily coloured by an analogy with Lent. The anticipation of Christmas under commercial pressure has also made it harder to sustain the appropriate sense of alert watchfulness, but the fundamental Advent prayer remains Maranatha Our Lord, come (1 Corinthians 16.22). Church decorations are simple and spare, and purple is the traditional liturgical colour. In the northern hemisphere, the Advent season falls at the darkest time of the year, and the natural symbols of darkness and light are powerfully at work throughout Advent and Christmas. The lighting of candles on an Advent wreath was imported into Britain from northern Europe in the nineteenth century, and is now a common practice. The Moravian custom of the Christingle has similarly enjoyed great success in Britain since the latter part of the twentieth century, with the encouragement of the Children s Society; Christingle services may take place before or after Christmas.The Third Sunday of Advent was observed in medieval times as a splash of colour in the restrained atmosphere of Advent (Gaudete or Rose Sunday ), and the last days of Advent were marked by the sequence of Great O Antiphons, which continue to inspire modern Advent hymns and meditations. ~from Common Worship: Times and Seasons 2

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The Lord speaks to us in scripture and preaching about his Son s return for the final judgment. We respond proclaiming our belief, praying for the world and ourselves, and greeting one another in his Name. A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah Jeremiah 33: The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness." Reader The Word of the Lord. "Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. 7 The Sermon Fr. Ryan R. Whitley The Nicene Creed BCP p. 358 The Prayers of the Please kneel. (The strange word "Maranatha" is actually two Aramaic words put together (Marana - tha). Aramaic was the dialect of Hebrew spoken by Jesus. The phrase is generally interpreted as a statement of belief, meaning: "Our Lord has come." When combined in these petitions with the prayer, "Come, Lord Jesus," we are holding together the two themes of Advent - preparing for the annual remembrance of the Nativity of Christ, and preparing for our Lord's Second Coming at the end of days.) In joyful expectation of his coming to our aid we pray to Jesus. Come to your Church as Lord and judge. We pray for, Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Dan, our Bishop, and Ryan, our priest. We pray for those in Anglican Cycle of Prayer, Southeast Asia and for those in our Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, Church of the Epiphany, Royersford; Church of the Holy Spirit, Harleysville; Church of St. Augustine of Hippo, Norristown; St. Dismas Mission Congregation; St. James Church, Collegeville and for those in our Companion Diocese of Guatemala, Church of the Virgin St. Mary. By your Holy Spirit, guide and empower us as we seek candidates for a bishop of your choosing in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania: a bishop who will lead us, celebrate our diversity, and guide and equip our diocese for mission. We are collecting donations to give to the Torrey House, a small halfway haven for adults with mental disabilities, where constructive lives are fashioned again with everyone looking forward to living independently. African Team Ministries: This Christmas season we will be selling beautiful crafts, jewelry and soapstone items sent to us from African Team Ministries. The handcrafts will be available after the 8:00 and 10:00 services beginning Dec. 6. All sale proceeds will help African villages establish clean drinking water systems and other life saving projects.
