3 Malarkey from Fr. John! Never Say Never! Three years ago I chose to retire. I told Archbishop Sartain I didn t want to have responsibility for a parish but I would help out wherever needed. After some months of rest and travel I took up residence at Holy Rosary Edmonds and from there I helped out at a variety of parishes throughout the Archdiocese. I also attended a good number of events-more so than many of the retired priests as I was healthy enough to do so. A couple of months ago it suddenly occurred to me that I was showing up at too many events which meant being in front of the Archbishop quite often. I decided that I should stop and stay out of sight a bit more before he noticed me. Too late; just after I thought that I got his call asking me to come to Sacred Heart Bellevue and here I am. In some respects it is easier to be based in one place rather than driving to many parishes and dealing with the frustrations of never knowing how long it would take due to traffic. Archbishop Sartain honored my request not to have to be the pastor in charge of a parish I feel I have made all the mistakes I need to make in this life being in charge and I was delighted that he appointed Deacon Sam Basta to be in charge of the operation of the parish. You will notice that he is listed in the bulletin as the Pastoral Coordinator which means that he not only oversees the day to day operation of the parish but he also has pastoral responsibilities like giving a homily at Mass as you have seen him do and conducting Baptisms, Funerals and Weddings that do not include a Mass. Both Deacon Sam and Deacon Scott have received Holy Orders as Permanent Deacons in the church and they are members of a sizable group of Deacons throughout not only our Archdiocese but throughout the country and in other countries who serve the church in many different ministries. Archbishop Sartain has been choosing Deacons to be in charge of parishes when a priest can t or chooses not to due to age or health issues. I am very grateful for the dedication and assistance of both of them as this arrangement allows me to concentrate on the kind of ministry I entered the priesthood to do. I wanted to write especially to thank you for the wonderful welcome you have extended to me here at Sacred Heart and I know that Deacon Sam feels the same. We have greatly appreciated your words of encouragement and support and we look forward to immersing ourselves in the life of Sacred Heart and it s people. There is a great history here and we are committed to building on what has been and giving it our best efforts for what can be. We know with the Psalm writer this Sunday that The hand of the Lord feeds us: he answers all our needs. While none of us is God, St. Teresa of Avila reminds us that: Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are the body. Christ has no body on earth now but yours. This is why we are here to join you in being Christ s body at Sacred Heart. How do we want to do ministry? Joyfully we hope. Let me conclude this week with this description of joyfulness: Through deep acceptance of our lives we remember to laugh, play and see humor in life. Our spirit is regularly filled with feelings of joy as we celebrate how extraordinary it is to be alive. I pray that, like St. Paul in today s second reading, we can all live in a manner worthy of the call we have received with humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. My friends said we thought you said you were retired? I said I guess never say never! Blessings and peace to you. Fr. John.

If you can do one 4-hour shift, either as a family or an individual, to help those in need, please register online at To find out more, watch the video at - Thank you to these amazing young people who visited with us for Mass last week, from our sister parish, St. Francis of the Lakota. Have you seen the banner in the narthex? The famous Lakota mystic Black Elk had a prophetic vision. He saw that his people would lose heart in their many sufferings and that the Sacred Hoop of His Nation would be broken. Black Elk also saw hope. He foretold that after seven generations, his people and all peoples would unite. Today s children on Rosebud Reservation represent the seventh generation since Black Elk s prophecy. He predicted the healing of the Sacred Hoop. Black Elk later converted to Catholicism and taught the faith to his people. RACHEL S CORNER Hope and Healing After Abortion How many times have you tried to run from God when the shame and regret have been too overwhelming? God is calling you to allow Him to help you face what has hurt so much inside since the day of your abortion. Let Him hold you in His merciful embrace on a Rachel s Vineyard Retreat. 6 Administration & Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 5 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Obstacles to Stewardship People who want to live as Christian disciples and Christian stewards face serious obstacles. In the United States and other nations, a dominate secular culture often contradicts religious convictions about the meaning of life. This culture frequently encourages us to focus on ourselves and our pleasures. At times, we can find it far too easy to ignore spiritual realities and to deny religion a role in shaping human and social values. As Catholics we have entered into the mainstream of American society and experienced its advantages, many of us also have been adversely influenced by this secular culture. We know what it is to struggle against selfishness and greed, and we realize that it is harder for many today to accept the challenge of being a Christian steward. It is essential, therefore, that we make a special effort to understand the true meaning of stewardship and live accordingly. Taken from a Summary of the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Pastoral Assistant for Children s Faith Formation Sacred Heart Parish seeks a faith-filled and creative selfstarter with strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a love for working with children to evangelize preschool and elementary students, inviting them into a relationship with Christ and the Church.
