All are welcome to come forward to receive the body and blood of Christ in the bread and wine. The bread is gluten-free. Receive the bread with open hands, then dip it into either the chalice of wine or the glass goblet containing grape juice. If you have an allergy to eggs you may request a wafer. If you prefer a blessing, place your arms in front of your chest. You are also welcome to remain in the pew and offer prayers. Ushers will direct you to the communion line which forms at the back of the sanctuary and moves up to the altar rail. If you wish to have the Pastor serve Communion in the pew, please inform one of the ushers before the service begins. Thank you for bringing children to worship today. It is hard work to worship with kids, but it is such important work that helps them and the whole church. The sound of a child in worship is the sound of a new Christian being formed. The presence, energy, and noise of children are most welcome here. If needed, an attendant is available to be with children in the nursery; activity bags also are available there. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL REGISTRATION OPEN - Register now for Vacation Bible School August 15 th - 17 th from 5-7:30 pm each day. All children age 5-12 are welcome, and we would love to have members of the community participate. Please invite your family, friends and neighbors you think might be interested. A hearty snack will be served from 5:00-5:30pm. Following the snack, we will have activity stations, including crafts, games and music, based on our theme Jonah and the Big Fish! Our final day will include a short performance of Jonah and the Big Fish that will be open to the public. The registration form can be found on the front page of the church website at goodshepherddecorah.org. EWALU DAY CAMP will be happening at First Lutheran August 8 th 12 th from 8:30 am-3 pm led by counselors from Camp Ewalu. It's open to all Decorah students in Kindergarten - 6th grade; those who have just finished 6th grade also are welcome to attend. Cost is $52/student; Good Shepherd has funds to support Good Shepherd members attending

NOTES ON THE MUSIC TODAY Dan Raney and Brooke Joyce "Vélkomne Med Æra" (Welcome With Honour), from Norwegian Geirr Tveitt's "Hundred Hardanger Tunes," was originally composed for solo piano. Tveitt ( ) spent much of his career under suspicion of having been a Nazi sympathizer. Unfortunately, about 80% of his music, which existed only in single paper copies, was lost in a fire in The author of Lord Our God, With Praise We Come", Petter Dass, is considered the first important Norwegian poet. This hymn is part of a commentary on the first petition of the Lord s Prayer. The English translation is by Peter Sveeggen, who taught briefly at Decorah High School. Appearing early in multiple oral traditions, "O Day Full of Grace" was published in early Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian hymnals (the earliest in 1450). The present ELW translation is by Gerald Thorson who retired from St. Olaf College in The tune was written by Danish church musician and organist, Christoph Weyse ( ). Offertory, En Sangers Bøn (A Singer's Prayer), is music by German-Norwegian composer F. A. Reissiger; text is by J. S. Welhaven. Sung to Jean Sibleius iconic national tune, Finlandia, the text for "This is My Song" was written between the two World Wars by two separate authors. The tune was written in 1899 to support the Finnish press, then being repressed by the Russians. The text to one of Carolina Sandell-Berg s earliest hymns, Children of the Heavenly Father (1858), may have tragedy in its origin. Shortly before writing the hymn, Carolina was traveling with her father and watched him fall overboard and drown. The tune is a probably a Swedish folk tune, and has been associated with the text since they were published together in Arguably one of the world s best-loved hymns, How Great Thou Art is a passionate response to the beauty of nature and the sound of church bells. Carl Boberg was returning home from a meeting in Krönobäck, Sweden, in 1885 when inspiration hit. The associated tune is thought to be a Swedish folk melody, origins unknown. The most recently composed of today s hymns, We Are All One in Mission, was written in response to a 1986 letter from Lutheran Bishop Paul Erickson. Kourtane (also called Nyland) is currently named for the Finnish province of its presumed origin. Postlude, "Reyndist engum leiðin löng" (No Road Too Long), is a traditional Icelandic folk song.
