This was a gathering of the various organisations linked to the Parish, with the opportunity to share. There was a good turnout of 14 different organisations being represented. Andy McCormack, Parish Development Worker with C.M.S. Ireland facilitated the evening. He gave the overarching vision, being to build and renew links and community within the church and into the local community. After each group had shared, we divided into 3 groups each discussing the following questions:- What do we have in common Values, Activities, Targets? Where would you see the mission and outreach of the Parish in the next three years? How can your organisation be involved? The Congress is just the beginning of a process. The Renewal and Development Group met in February to analyse the response. The Congress felt that two main areas were needed to be looked at. These were: 1) Youth Work: To look at the needs of youth and young adults, and 2) Communication: It was felt generally that all organisations could make better use of the Communications Group and have their organisation s work on the website, Facebook, Twitter, the Church Review and the Parish Magazine. THE PARISH NEWS - MAY 2013 The Parish News is published monthly and is usually available by the first Sunday of the Month. Copy Deadline: Articles or Organisation reports for inclusion should be sent either in written format to the Parish Office, or by to castleknockparishoffice2@eircom.net. They should be submitted by the 10 th of the preceding month. If possible, please send them in a word document. Any article in the context of an might not be published. 3 Exciting New Initiative In the light of the outcome of the Congress, we have decided to set up a group to look at how to develop youth work in the Parish. We are exploring the possibility of starting up a new service of worship for teenagers and young adults in the Church. If you would like to help out in any way, we would be delighted to hear from you. All volunteers, young and not so young, would be welcome. Please contact either myself, Rev. Victor, Bernard Sheridan or the Parish Office. I look forward to see what emerges. Yours sincerely Rev Paul. Annual General Vestries: The Easter General Vestries will be held on Sunday 14th April, a.m. in St. Mary s, Clonsilla, and after a.m. service in St. Brigid s, Castleknock. There will be a short morning service in Clonsilla. It is the right, indeed the duty, of all registered Vestry Persons to attend this important annual meeting. Don t blame others if you are not there to exercise your vote. Unregistered people are welcome to attend but cannot vote. The main purpose of the Easter General Vestry is to appoint the select vestry and present audited accounts. The Easter General Vestry of a parish consists of its registered vestry men and women, of whom a register is kept and revised each January. At the Easter General Vestry meeting, the following are elected:- (a) the people s churchwarden, (b) the people s glebe warden, and (c) 12 persons to serve on the Select Vestry. Remember, this is your meeting, just as this is your parish. Looking forward to seeing you. Parish News Page 3 April 2013

6 KNIT & NATTER We have been knitting and nattering for about the past three to four years and while there is much nattering done the needles are clicking too! We meet in each other s homes twice a month (September to April) and over the years have produced hats and scarves for the homeless people being looked after by the Simon Community volunteers. We knit matinee jackets and bonnets for premature babies, neo natal baby bonnets and white casket blankets. These are given to the main Dublin Maternity hospitals and are greatly appreciated there. We also join in the Big Knit of Innocent Smoothies hats and this venture supports the charity Age Action. Last November we delivered 639 smoothies hats! What a pleasure it was to have Rev. Victor join us recently he quickly grasped the concept of plain and purl! We don t give up during the summer either but continue to knit and more than likely natter too! Join us sometime! Valerie Greene Rev. Victor at the Knit & Natter Christian Funeral 9th March: Kenneth (Ken) Nuzum, in St. Brigid s Church. Our deepest sympathy goes to the Nuzum Family, especially Ken s two children Nevada and Andrew. I am the resurrection and the life Parish News Page 6 April 2013

11 ANSWERS: - Look them up in 1)Ezekiel 45:11 2) 1 Kings 4:12 3) Esther 3:7 4) Psalm 83:11 5) 2 Kings 6:25 April Fool April 1st is All Fools Day, the day when people play tricks on each other. It s not sure just how it started but one idea is that it started when in 1564 the French decreed that the New Year began on January 1st as opposed to April 1st. So that the traditional New Year gifts and cards were now sent in January. For a joke some people continued to send mock gifts and cards, silly things, on April 1st. In Scotland the April Fool is an April Noddy, a cuckoo or a gowk, the same day is Boob s Day in Spain, Fish Day in France and Doll s Day in Japan. All round the world people are busy kidding their friends that their shoelaces are undone or someone is sent to buy a pot of striped paint but every joke has to stop at midday. After that the joker becomes a fool. What is it? There are some very strange, not to say peculiar, words in the Bible and I m not kidding you. 1. Is a BATH A) something with bubbles, or B) A liquid measure 2. Is BAANA A) a mis-spelt fruit, or B) An official from Megiddo? 3. Is NISSAN A) the first month of the year, or B) A form of transport? 4. Are OREB and ZEEB A) cartoon characters used to tell modern versions of Bible stories on channel TV, or B) Midianite princes? 5. Is KAB A) a measure, or B) Part of a chariot? Guess the first and then look them up - answers are at the bottom of this page. How do you part the Red Sea? With a sea-saw Did you hear about the little girl who does bird impressions? She eats worms Parish News Page 11 April 2013
12 CASTLEKNOCK COMMUNITY COLLEGE BEKIND TO CALCUTTA Today, I want to share with you, my experience, so far, of the Bekind in the Community Youth Group. This group was set up to fundraise for Bekind Ireland, and to help twelve students travel to Calcutta this summer. Bekind Ireland is a charity that strives to help alleviate poverty in India, in particular Calcutta. Bekind supports many causes in Calcutta, such as providing an ambulance for medical care, a bus for young girls to and from school and the running of the Bekind Boy's Home, along with many others. Getting involved in this campaign has been an eye opener to the poverty around us and how everyone can help to combat it, even if it is just in a small way. I have gained many things from this campaign, from team work skills to a huge confident boost in the area of public speaking. I've recently been chosen to be one of the twelve travelling to Calcutta. This is an experience that will teach me many things; I hope to gain an insight to life on the other side of the world, how lucky we are to have what we do and how we can help others in their circumstances. There is huge responsibility that comes with being one of the chosen, we are representing our group, community and country. A challenge no doubt, but one happily accepted! Not everyone can make the trip to Calcutta, but the motto of Bekind Ireland is 'If you can't be there, be kind', something that has gotten most of us through the anxiety of whether we were going or not. We wanted to change the lives of the street children and learned that in doing what little you can, makes all the difference. The Author, Sarah O Connor (left) celebrates with Karen Farrell having reached a fund raising target thanks to the generosity of the parishioners of Castleknock and Clonsilla.
