Devotions in honor of St. Anthony: Tuesdays following 7:30 a.m. Mass CONFESSIONS Saturday: 3:00-3:45 p.m. BAPTISMS Baptisms are celebrated during any Mass on Sunday. Preparation is required for parents. Godparents must provide a letter of recommendation if not a member of Ascension Parish. Please make arrangements 5 weeks in advance by calling the Parish Office. Catholics who do not qualify as sponsors may NOT be Christian Witnesses. NEW PARISHIONERS: Please register by calling or stopping by the Parish Office. Be sure to inform your former parish that you are leaving. MARRIAGE: Arrangements to be made at the rectory at least 6 months in advance. Church date and arrangement should precede all other wedding plans. SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: In an emergency, contact the Parish Office. For Pastoral Emergencies at United Memorial Medical Center contact Reverend Kenneth Comer of UMMC Pastoral Care at (office) or (24 hr. pager). He will contact a priest if requested. The Eucharist is taken to the homes of the sick upon request. The office should be notified of the sick and aged confined to their homes or hospital requesting a pastoral visit or Eucharist. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Will only be issued to parishioners in good standing. You must attend Mass regularly for at least three (3) months prior to the date you are requesting the recommendation for. To be eligible you must: Attend Mass Regularly (Weekly), Contribute to the well-being of the Parish, Be Fully Initiated into the Catholic Faith (You have received the Sacraments of Baptism/Confirmation/Eucharist), If married, you must be in a valid Roman Catholic Marriage.

2 PAGE 2 APRIL 29, 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the Church in the United States with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. For people living in these regions, barriers to practicing the faith include lack of resources, shortages of pastoral agents, and the poor infrastructures that make relatively simple things like participating in weekly Mass difficult. Your support of the collection helps to share the faith with those who long to experience God s mercy within strong faith communities. For example, in many of the rural communities in Cuba in the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana there are no Churches. People in these areas have been lacking ministers and places of worship. The Gospel could not be spread, because there were very few messengers to share it and a few places where people could go to hear it. But with your support, pastoral agents have received training to bring the Gospel to these areas and neighborhoods. Your support has helped bring people to the Church, through religious education and retreats, and the Church to the people, through evangelization efforts and the repair of Church buildings. This has given them the hope and the joy of the Gospel. Our diocese contributes to support this important work by a second collection during the month of May. Please be generous in this collection and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support in May will a difference. Gal. 5:14 Working with the Word Fourth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018 Reading I: Acts 9:26-31 Responsorial Psalm: 22:26-27, 28, 30,31-32 Reading II: 1 John 3:18-24 Gospel: John 15:1-8 Focusing the Gospel Key words and phrases: bear fruit, he prunes, because of the word, Remain in me To the point: Bearing fruit - and even more fruit - requires pruning. The pruning tool of the Father-vine grower is the Son's word. Allowing this word to shape us brings forth a lifegiving relationship with Jesus (likened to a branch that remains on a vine) that assures abundant and good fruit. Five times we are told to bear fruit. Eight times we are told to remain in Jesus. How many times, then, must we be shaped by the word? Connecting the Gospel...to the Second Reading: The second reading makes very concrete how we remain in Jesus: by keeping his commandment of love in deed and truth to experience: Every gardener knows the value and necessity of pruning. Ascension Parish is seeking a responsible person over the age of 21 to be the Person of the Day for any (all) rental activity at the parish, whenever the hall or bar is under contract. This will be a paid position. It is a flat rate subject to the approval of the Finance Committee, the Pastoral Council and the Pastor. Responsibilities include: Open/Close for Hall/Bar Events. Clear the entrances of snow, ice and put down ice melt on the ramp, back door and front entry to the building. Set out silverware and dish count BEFORE and AFTER event. Complete breakage report if necessary. Complete incident report if necessary. Check bathrooms (Men s/women s) hourly for cleanliness. Fill hand towel dispenser and toilet paper dispensers and empty trash as needed. Mop up any spills. Clean any spills in the HALL/BAR. Control HEAT and A/C Before and After event. Set up PA/A/V and wireless IP in support of event. Make sure ALL TRASH is removed from Hall, Kitchen, Bar and placed in dumpster at end of event. Check kitchen stoves to make sure they are ON as required and OFF before closing up. Check all hall exit doors to ensure they are CLOSED and LOCKED before leaving hall. Complete checklist. For many in Latin America and Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good New of Christ.
