1 Loving Worshiping Learning Serving, In the name of Christ. April 2019 Creatures of Hope Human beings are creatures of hope. We need hope just like we need air or food and water. If you deprive a human of hope, they shrivel up and the dying process begins from the inside out. But hope does not simply keep us alive, it propels us forward. In this way humans are similar to sharks. Sharks must move forward to stay alive. Once they stop moving they stop breathing. Once we stop hoping we begin to suffocate in what is and can no longer move into what will be. Hope gives us the ability to imagine the world in a different and better way. It allows us to imagine ourselves in a different and better way. Hope not only gives us the imagination but the strength to live in the direction of those new images. The Great Thanksgiving Prayer C (BCP 372) says, Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. The Eucharistic hope is not one that simply comforts though it does comfort. It also gives us strength and power to move forward as transformed people. The second part challenges us to move beyond only receiving forgiveness but to live in that forgiveness. The resurrection hope that Jesus procures and promises challenges us to live our lives truly alive. The word renewal brings with it images of new life, a renewed life, or even a resurrected life. I like these images but often they seem to remain in the past tense. Renewal is sometimes seen as something that once happened to me rather than something I am living out right now. Wendell Berry ends his poem Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front with the line practice resurrection. I like this as the image of renewal. The hope we find in the resurrection of Christ gives us strength and courage to practice resurrection in our lives. When we practice resurrection, we are challenging ourselves to live more like Christ. It takes hard work, strength and continual renewal to widen and deepen the love we share with the world. Practicing resurrection is about returning continually to the deep love of God and learning something new to put into practice in our own lives. As you move from Lent to Easter may you be challenged by the hope found in our resurrected Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to live your life in a forward direction, reflecting more and more the deep and wide love of Christ that is victorious over death. Matt + VISION STATEMENT: St. Paul s Episcopal Church seeks to provide an open community of faith for all who need love, hope, and acceptance. 1 Inside this Issue From the Pastor s Desk 1 Shrove Tuesday Pics 2 Electronic Giving 3 Palm Crosses, Easter Eggs 4 Ashes to Go 4 Holy Week 5 What s Happening 6 Birthdays, Anniversaries 7 Faith Climate Talk, Bishop s 7 Annual Appeal Prayers 8 Grateful Thanks 9 Community Schedule 9 April Calendar 10 April Ministry Schedule 11 Upcoming: Climate Talk Global Climate Disruption: How Do We Know?
