Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Brian Salter, lead pastor * Call to worship taken from Psalm 104 Leader: Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. All: How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Leader: May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke. All: I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! * Hymn of praise All Creatures of Our God and King All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, ye clouds that sail in heav n along, O praise him, alleluia! Thou rising morn in praise rejoice, ye lights of evening, find a voice, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Let all things their Creator bless, and worship him in humbleness, O praise him, alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, three in one, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! text by Francis of Assisi, 1225
* Prayer of adoration Affirmation of the worth of Bible translation Leader: The Bible was originally written in two languages. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, the language of the Israelites, while the New Testament was written in Greek, the language most widely known in the region of the early church. These original writings were directly inspired by God and are therefore authoritative, so that in all controversies of our faith, the church is to appeal to the Bible in its original languages. All: However, these original languages are not understood by all the people of God, and every believer has a right to, and a vital interest in, being able to read and search the Scriptures. Leader: Therefore, the Scriptures are to be translated into the common language of every nation and people group to which they come so that the Word of God may dwell abundantly in all. All: When we have the Word of God in our own language, we are able to worship God as he has instructed us and to live with the hope that comes from perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures. based on The Westminster Confession of Faith, 1.8 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Jesus, I Come Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come; into thy freedom, gladness, and light, Jesus, I come to thee; out of my sickness, into thy health, out of my wanting and into thy wealth, out of my sin and into thyself, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come; into thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to thee; out of myself to dwell in thy love, out of despair, into raptures above, upward forever on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come; into the joy and light of thy home, Jesus, I come to thee; out of the depths of ruin untold, into the peace of thy sheltering fold, ever thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to thee. text by William T. Sleeper, 1887
* Scripture reading from Jonah 1:1-16 Meg Jacobs (9:30) text printed in the bulletin John Plating (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Pastoral prayer Look Who s Running from God: A Prophet! Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor Invitation to the Lord s Table Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians who have previously been admitted to the Lord s Table, by the elders of this or any Gospel-proclaiming church, to receive the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper. Come with joy as you actively trust in Christ and willingly forsake sin, having sought reconciliation in all relationships. Hymn of confession Jesus Paid It All I hear the Savior say, Your strength indeed is small, child of weakness, watch and pray, find in me your all in all. Refrain: Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe; sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow. Lord, now indeed I find your power, and yours alone, can change the leper s spots, and melt the heart of stone. Refrain For nothing good have I whereby your grace to claim I ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calv ry s Lamb. Refrain text by Elvina M. Hal, 1865 Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace based on Acts 2 and Romans 5 God raised Jesus Christ from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
Words of institution Communion affirmation Leader: God of all good, you have prepared for us a feast; and because we are unworthy in ourselves to sit down as guests, we wholly rest on the merits of Jesus and hide ourselves in his righteousness. All: In this supper we remember the agony of the cross and the cost of redemption. We rejoice in your eternal love, boundless grace, and infinite compassion. Leader: We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. based on The Valley of Vision prayer, The Lord s Supper pg. 195 Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements Songs for meditation Oh Give Thanks We were wand ring in the desert with our souls so starved and weak; we were hungry for a homeland we did not know how to seek, but we lifted up our voices to the only One who hears, and the God of mercy came and brought us near. We were locked out of the garden and our backs bent down with pain; in the shadow of death s darkness we were slaves to sin and blame. Then we cried out in our labor to the only One who hears, and the God of mercy wiped away our tears. Refrain: Oh give thanks to the Lord for his love endures forever! We were wand ring and lost and our Father brought us home to a safe dwelling place, to a feast of joy and laughter. Oh give thanks to the Lord for he is good. We were fools in our rebellion with our hunger strike of pride; we were sick and growing closer to the death we should have died. Then he heard of our condition and he called us by our names and the God of glory took away our shame. Refrain. continued
We were far out on the ocean making wealth and chasing dreams, but the waves of great destruction brought us trembling to our knees, and we cried like frightened sailors to the only One who hears, and the God of comfort took away our fears. Refrain. text based on Psalm 107, music by Wendell Kimbrough 2014 Wendell Kimbrough, ARP, UBP, CCLI Lic. # We Will Feast In the House of Zion text and music by Joshua Moore and Sandra McCracken 2015 Drink Your Tea Music, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic.# * Prayer of thanksgiving * Hymn of praise And Can It Be That I Should Gain And can it be that I should gain an int rest in the Savior s blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain? For me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? He left his Father s throne above (so free, so infinite his grace!), humbled himself (so great his love!), and bled for all his chosen race. Tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me. Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
* Benediction * Doxology * Postlude No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach th eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? text by Charles Wesley, 1738 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Congregation standing as you are able Musicians for this week: Amy Barham vocalist Charley Crichton bass William Darby vocalist David Henry guitar, vocalist Maddie Lee piano Meredith Lee cello Hannah Lutz viola The rosebud in the fellowship hall today is for the birth of Samuel Steven Doak, born to Elizabeth and Alan Doak on January 22.
Jonah 1: The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me. 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish. 7 Then the sailors said to each other, Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity. They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you? 9 He answered, I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land. 10 This terrified them and they asked, What have you done? (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.) 11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us? 12 Pick me up and throw me into the sea, he replied, and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you. 13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14 Then they cried to the Lord, O Lord, please do not let us die for taking this man s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O Lord, have done as you pleased. 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him. NEW SERMON SERIES Jonah: Aligning our Passions with God s Compassion for the Nations Jonah is not primarily a book about being swallowed by a huge fish. Rather, it is primarily about being aligned with God s compassion for all nations. When our hearts are not aligned with God s heart for the world, we too will run from his call and rage at his mercy. In preparation for our World Missions Conference in March, where we will hear how God is reaching the nations in the United Kingdom, we anticipate that our study of Jonah will lead us to all to examine our priorities and to align our passions with God s compassion for the nations.
SERMON NOTES Look Who s Running from God: A Prophet! Jonah 1: The rejection of God s commands (vv. 1-3) 2. Three responses to the rebel (vv. 4-16) The loving pursuit of God The ironic reaction of the sailors The revealing resignation of Jonah
