January 13, 2019 Sanctuary Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.
Order of Worship Prelude Fairest Lord Jesus arr. Karen Kuehmann Welcome and greetings John Wingard, ruling elder * Call to worship based on Psalm 111 Leader: Praise the Lord. I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. All: For great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. Leader: He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever holy and awesome is his name. All: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. * Hymn of praise Lord, We Hear Your Word with Gladness Lord, we hear your Word with gladness: you have spoken we rejoice: words of love and life and freedom help us make their truth our choice! Now in holy celebration for your Word we worship you; Spoken, written, known in Jesus, ours today to prove anew. May we hear with understanding, by your Spirit taught and led. May the springs of all our being by your living Word be fed. May our hearts accept with meekness all the grace your light makes known. May obedience mark our footsteps till we make each word our own. You have spoken; yours the fullness, ours the wealth of this, your Word. Debtors, then, as living letters, we must make your gospel heard! By your Spirit s power transform us; shed your saving light abroad till our lives by love in action show our world the truth of God! text by Margaret Clarkson; holy manna
* Prayer of adoration Sacrament of baptism (11:00) Bronwen and Newton Wiggins bringing Newton Brookshire Wiggins, Jr. Affirmation of the excellence of scripture Leader: The testimony of the church should move us to a high and reverent esteem for the Holy Scripture. The church, and in particular, the preaching of God s Word, helps us to see the heavenly character of the Bible s content, the efficacy of its doctrine, the majesty of its style, the agreement of all its parts, and the scope of the whole, which is to give all glory to God. All: The testimony of the church also shows us the excellency and perfection of the Word of God and helps us to see how the Bible fully discloses the only way of salvation. Leader: Nevertheless, our full persuasion and assurance of the Bible s infallible truth and divine authority is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness in our hearts. All: T hanks be to God for the gift of his infallible and inerrant Word. based on The Westminster Confession of Faith, 1.5 Call to confession Hebrews 10:19-22 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Choral meditation (9:30) Christ, We Do All Adore Thee Chancel Choir Christ, we do all adore thee, and we do praise thee forever; Christ, we do all adore thee, and we do praise thee forever, For on the holy cross has thou the world from sin redeemed. Christ, we do all adore thee, and we do praise thee forever. from The Seven Last Words of Christ by Theodore Dubois, 1867; adore thee Silent prayers of confession
Assurance of God s pardoning grace Ephesians 2:4-5a, 8 Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. * Hymn of assurance 697 Wonderful Words of Life Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory Write Your Truth upon My Heart Chancel Choir Write your truth upon my heart; teach me Lord, I pray. Trace your grace on ev ry part, help me know your way. May each word be life to me, a treasure for my soul, a lamp to follow where you lead, come heal and make me whole. Write your peace upon my life; change me through and through. Write your name in gentle light, make me more like you. Press your image on my will, compose in me your theme, Your perfect plans of hope reveal, I give to you my dreams. Write your love upon my faith; you are God alone. Take all bitterness and hate, melt my heart of stone. Take your tender hands of grace, my dust create anew. Lord, make in me your sacred place and make me more like you. text and music by Patricia Mock and Douglas Nolan, 2015 * Doxology 731 * Prayer of dedication and thanksgiving * Scripture reading from Deuteronomy 6:1-9 John Holland (9:30) p. 284 in pew Bible and text printed in the bulletin Flannery Lowe (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Saturation in the Scripture, Devotion to the Lord Brian Salter, lead pastor

Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
