3 A For Missions by June Hines Okay, now this is funny! Cate Burnett, having tried five times to get to Moukoulou, the main village of the Guerguiko speakers, finally was able to spend a whole week in the village for the first time, hanging out with people, meeting with the translation committee, and working on Revelation. On my first night there I learned how to take a bath. I was having dinner at someone s house when the host looked at me and said, I thought you could wash yourself here so that when you get home you can go straight to bed, but our bathroom isn t like yours. Is that okay? I thought he meant wash my face and hands, said, No problem! Then they started to fill a bucket with a lot of water. All I could do was look at it and laugh they meant for me to take a bath! They put the bucket in the corner of the courtyard (which was surrounded by woven straw walls) and were like there you go! I went in, and there was the bucket, a wooden bench, and a bar of soap. Hmmmm. I could still hear them talking on the other side of the wall. Lots of questions came to mind. What to do? Do I stand in the bucket? It didn t look big enough for that. How do I get the water out of the bucket and onto me? Where do I put my clothes? What do I dry off with? Can the people on the other side of the straw wall really not see me? How long do I have to stay back here to make them think that I really did take a bath? In the end, I sat on the bench, washed my hands, face and feet, and splashed around a lot all while hoping that I was spending enough time back there! Overall, though, Cate s time in Moukoulou was a great success. I enjoyed meeting people, going for walks basically finding my village feet. The church elders have found me a place to call my own for the next few trips. We are working on getting a roof on this hut and some lights inside. I m definitely looking forward to my next trip out in March! The Starrs Alan, DeEtte, Calab, Peter and Kate will continue to serve Wycliffe from their home base in Indiana. They will serve as Regional Recruiters for Wycliffe-U.S.A. Alan and DeEtte will be connecting with people and helping them to find their role in the great task of working in God s harvest field. They ask that we pray for their effectiveness in working with the Lord of the harvest to find those He is calling. Newsflash! Ervin Starwalt is now officially an Approved Candidate for Wycliffe Bible Translators and will join Coleen as a full member of the mission soon. They are working on their assignment to Nigeria where Ervin will teach at the Theological College of Northern Nigeria. Coleen s assignment is being worked out with her current SIL branch in which she has served in Togo. Coleen thanks us for praying during this long waiting process. Kathleen Kepley has returned to Duncanville for three months where she will be working in the Wycliffe office. Let s give her a warm greeting when she comes to see us and keep her in our prayers as she regroups and visits 3
4 supporters. If anyone knows of a car that she can use, please call Hal (972) We would like to have her at church as much as possible, but we are not encouraging her to come see us on her trusty bike. Mouse on the Lenten Season revisted 2008 I can t believe he included us! she exclaims as she touches the tiny ash cross on her forehead. Indeed, Fr. Don and I have a special relationship, I tell her cheerfully. Then, becoming sober I state, Tonight we have accepted the invitation to the observance of a holy Lent as we prepare for the glorious Feast of the Resurrection. The ashes that we have received are a sign of our mortality and penitence, so that we may remember that only by Christ s gracious gift do we receive everlasting life. Alexander Schmemann tells us in Great Lent, Journey to Pascha, when a man leaves on a journey, he must know where he is going. Above all, Lent is a spiritual journey and its destination is Easter [when] we celebrate Christ s resurrection as something that happened and still happens to us. That s it! Lent is all about making our faith heart-real once again. She questions, Things are going to be different around here for the next forty days? Yes. For example, Leo the Great, Pope in 440, called Lent a time of forty days spiritual exercises during which we are to cleanse ourselves from the dust of our daily lives, to reorder our conduct a kind of religious renewal, or annual retreat in preparation for Easter. The Ash Wednesday liturgy on page 263 of The Book of Common Prayer suggests that we participate in self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting and self-denial as well as reading and meditating on God s holy Word. These exercises help us to establish a Lenten rhythm. How can we enter into these great mysteries and important truths of our faith? she muses. By joining the brothers and sisters of our body in the symbols and the actions of the Lenten season? Exactly. During Lent we see changing colors: purple denotes mourning, penitence, humility, suffering and fasting. Red will appear during Holy Week symbolizing love, zeal and blood. The black of Good Friday is the symbol of mourning and death. Finally, we have white and gold for purity, joy and the kingship of Christ on Easter day. Each Sunday we recite the Decalogue (The Ten Commandments). Following ancient custom our alleluias during the service have been buried to await their resurrection with shouts of great joy on Easter morn. There are two fast days during Lent as well Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, which are observed from sundown to sundown. Weddings are not celebrated during the Lenten days. An important aspect of Lent is the idea of a special positive discipline such as Bible reading, intensive prayer, or a study of an important Christian topic. This year the 4
5 church will be studying The Lord s Prayer in small groups. Let s invite Roy and grandfather to study every week as well. That will be uplifting. his brother Nick grow up among us all these years. Their faithful grandmother, Ann Woods, is a part of our Transformation family as well. Uplifting to study every week? That sounds more like penance to me, she admits. I am not one for studying too much. But it would be a good discipline I ll do it! Hmmmm. My penance is to ask Fr. Don to stop delivering that weekly ounce of very dark chocolate to my front door. Sigh! That keeps me in a mind of Lent more than all positive acts together. She speaks: All this prepares our lives to know our blessed Savior in the most intimate way. We ve been invited tonight in the name of the Church to the observance of a holy Lent. We ll walk the journey hand in hand in the fellowship of the faithful at Transformation Anglican Church. Gulp, I reply. Taking her extended hand we walk out into the moonlit night. Who Are Those Guys Anyway???
