1 Good News of Grace Grace Lutheran Church Green Bay, Wisconsin August 8, 2018 We celebrate Christ, teach Christ, witness to Christ, and care for others as though they are Christ. THE ST. JOHN S BIBLE The St. John s Bible combines calligraphy and artwork in a large, seven volume, 1,150 page Bible. It was commissioned by the Order of Saint Benedict (an ancient order of Roman Catholic monks) at St. John s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. It was the idea of Donald Jackson, the Senior Scribe for Queen Elizabeth and an internationally acclaimed artist and calligrapher, who assembled a team of more than 20 artists to do the work. Begun in 1998, the first words of the project weren t inked until the year 2000 on Ash Wednesday. A year later, the first volume, The Gospels and Acts was completed, but it wasn t until 2011 that the entire project was finished. The calligraphic style was developed by Jackson and based on traditional calligraphy, but is unique to the St. John s Bible. The lettering itself was also done in adherence to ancient traditions: written on calfskin with quills made from the feathers of swans, turkeys, and goose. The artwork includes many realistic illustrations of plants and animals native to Minnesota (including the picture for this article), but also more abstract paintings combining pictures and text from Biblical stories painted at times with real gold, silver, and platinum. Because I was selected to participate in a Cont d. on Page 2 Guide to the Good News: From the Pastor Front Cover & Page 2 Volunteer Opportunities Page 4 From the Parish Administrator Page 2 Organ Concert Series Page 5 Council News Page 2 Personal Growth Board Page 6 Congregation News Page 3 Celebration Board Page 6 Prayer Request Instructions Page 3 A Thank you to Grace Page 7 Education Board Page 3 & 4 Worship Minister Schedule Page 7 Young at Heart Corner Page 4 Access to Grace Back Cover DEADLINE FOR THE NEXT GOOD NEWS OF GRACE: The next Good News of Grace will be sent out the week of August 20. Please have articles in to the Church Office by 12:00 noon Monday, August 20.

2 week-long writing workshop by the Collegeville Writing Institute at St. John s University, I was able to see the entire original copy of the St. John s Bible there. I ve been to art museums before. Usually you have to stand on tiptoes behind rivers of people flowing in front of you obscuring the paintings. I was completely alone with the Saint John s Bible. For more than an hour. It was like having da Vinci s Last Supper all to myself. I could stand as close as I wanted, inches away, to look at that butterfly painting and at every other set of pages that were on display from each of the seven volumes. A photocopy of a scan of a print of the painting does not do the butterfly painting or any of the reproductions of the Bible justice. The butterflies appear to be three dimensional, alive. As miraculously beautiful as the St. John s Bible is, each of the six calligraphers made one mistake. Usually these mistakes were discovered after a whole book or chapter was finished. Obviously, this isn t computer text: there s no way to paste an extra sentence or word or two where it was missing while the rest of the text moves over to make way for it. Rather than rewriting all the text that followed, however, the calligraphers employed the traditional technique for correcting mistakes. They wrote the missing sentence or words on the bottom of the page and drew a line or an attractive symbol indicating where the text belonged. In ancient manuscripts, the calligraphers often drew humorous or whimsical pictures to show where the corrections belonged: a jester, for example, smiling and pointing. Correcting the mistakes in this way reminds readers that no one is perfect. Making the corrections beautiful is a way of reminding us that despite our own mistakes, we are covered by the beautiful loving Grace of God.
