A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. (Luke 6:43) Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name. The Three Basic Lenten Diciplines The Symbols of Lent Color: Violet (purple) is the usual color for Lent, symbolizing repentance and prayerful reflection. Red on Good Friday relates to Jesus sacrifice, while white is the color for Easter. Ashes placed on the forehead hint at an anciaent ritualcovering oneself with ashes in penitence. Receiving the cross-shaped smudge reminds us that we are dust and is a public statement of repentance. The Forty Days of Lent parallel the 40 days which Jesus spent in fasting and prayer in the wilderness (among many 40 references in the Bible). Sunday are not counted as days of Lent. Good Friday and Easter Vigil, while technically not in Lent, are counted as part of the 40 days. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 29, and Yom Kippur October 8. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Cuando era niño mi padre me llevaba al rancho de mi abuelito en México. En una de esas visitas mi abuelo y mis tíos estaban quemando la tierra en su rancho. Mientras el fuego ardía, papa Manuel nos explicaba que era necesario reducir todo en cenizas para que la tierra recobrara sus fuerzas y quedará más fértil. Sin saberlo, mi abuelo me dio la imagen que hasta hoy sostiene mi concepto del Miércoles de Cenizas y de la Cuaresma. El Miércoles de Cenizas es la fiesta cristiana que por lo menos doce siglos ha señalado el comienzo de la Cuaresma. No cabe duda que para los latinos este día es de particular atracción. Es uno de los pocos días del año litúrgico en cual llegamos al templo en masa con tal de recibir las cenizas en la frente. Nosotros somos un pueblo enraizado en la tierra y sabemos que la tierra necesita quemarse de vez en cuando para seguir produciendo. INFORMACION PARA BAUTIZO Tenemos bautizos cada mes llame a la oficina para mas información al Padrinos de Bautizo Que los padres de familia escojan padrinos que verdaderamente viven la fe y serán buen ejemplo para sus hijos en el futuro. No escoja padrinos solamente porque son familiares o para dar un honor a un amigo(a) u otras razones que no son de beneficio para el niño. Recuerden que los padrinos tienen que ser Católicos, Bautizados, Confirmados, que han hecho su Primera Comunión, y que viven en Armonía con el papel de Padrino o Madrina. Esto quiere decir que deben ser casados en la iglesia Católica. Que los padres de familia no hagan daño a sus hijos a través de escoger a padrino que no viven su fe. Requisitos para ser padrinos Un Cristiano maduro que establecerá una relación de fe de toda la vida y estará dispuesto a caminar con el niño en su jornada de fe. Es un modelo Cristiano para el niño. Esta Confirmado, Católico Participante que asiste a Misa regularmente. Si esta casado, debe estar casado por la Iglesia Católica. Que conozca, comprenda y participe en la comunidad de la Iglesia. Using the book, Unbound, by Neal Lozano, participants will discover a deeper understanding of themselves as Sons and Daughters of God. The Five Keys to freedom in Christ discussed in the book, offer ways of finding the peace with the regret we still may carry for our sins, and ways to become free... truly free, from our present sinful struggles.
