February 2011 Volume 9 Number 2 Hōkū Mākoi: The Epiphany Star Second Sunday of Christmastide January 2, 2011 A most unusual service, was the reaction of some worshippers. We had no sermon, said another. The Covenant Players were awesome, added another. The Covenant Players are thespians for the Lord, traveling throughout the world nine months of the year communicating the message of Jesus Christ using the medium of drama. They spend three months in Hawaii. (Imagine living in suitcases nine months out of a year!) Charles M. Tanner is founder, director and playwright. His more than 3,000 plays have been translated into different languages and performed around the world. Founded in 1963, we are fortunate to have the Covenant Players visit Epiphany with these plays to enhance our gospel experience. The first, The Present, was a two-person play, a scene shown below. The cast: Iris Scott, Kurt & Cathy Purucker Another highlight of this service was the performance of Kurt Kanzawa whose powerful, operatic baritone voice kept the congregation spellbound with his rendition of O Holy Night, accompanied by cousin Donald Matsumori, on the organ. As the last note was sung, the congregation rose to give Kurt a standing ovation! The Clamping was a one-person play, portraying one of the magi and takes place at the birth of Jesus. Follow the Leader is termed a quick-eared-play because it is very short, to the point, and requires the audience to play close attention so as not the miss the message. All of these plays use very simple props and costumes so as not to detract the all-important messages. This is a unique use of drama to communicate with an audience. Kurt is a senior majoring in visual arts at Columbia University in New York City. He has applied to Manhattan School of Music and Curtis Institute to work on a graduate degree. Quoting from August 26, 2010, Letters to the Editor, in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Mary Betterman wrote: Kurt will be singing the national anthem at the New York Mets game tomorrow, Japanese Heritage Night. She further writes, Kurt recently performed at the (continued, Page 3 Second Sunday )

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 2 Aloha Epiphany Ohana, Father David s Corner Praise the Lord in Song! I have not been to Disneyland in at least seven years, but one of my favorite rides whenever I go is It s a Small World. Granted, the repetition of the tune while waiting in line and on the ride itself gets embedded in the brain after awhile. But the beauty of the ride is the image it presents of children from literally all parts of the world and representing every nationality and ethnicity on our planet, all singing and playing the same tune but in their own unique ways individuality in harmony! My mother said that it shows her a slice of what heaven will be like! One of my visions for our worship at Epiphany is both to enjoy what we know and love in our traditional music, and yet also to embrace a wider variety of forms of music that include several other cultural influences. To me, like my mom said, this is indeed a slice of our heavenly home to come. First of all, Epiphany has different members in our multi-ethnic community, so it stands to reason that we all like various kinds of music rather than all of us preferring only one type together. There is no one set style of music that is any more religious or spiritual than another, except in how they magnify God and inspire us to worship the Lord with all our heart and mind. Secondly, my vision of God, of the world, and of myself gets enlarged when viewed and experienced through the eyes of another culture. This is true whenever I travel to different countries, but it is also valid when I allow myself to experience different styles and even languages of music. Thirdly, by sticking with only one style of traditional music generally European or early American and from the 18 th -19 th centuries we may enjoy that but we also do ourselves a disservice by ignoring the treasure-trove of other cultural expressions of song that God the Holy Spirit has inspired others to compose, for us to enjoy and for God s glory. Part of the effort to broaden our musical repertoire at Epiphany has been to make use of various styles of music for the different church seasons. For instance, for the Epiphany Season that we are in now, we are using the Chicago Gloria, a gospel-inspired piece. We will also gradually incorporate more pieces with Hawaiian, Asian, and Latino backgrounds as time goes on. In addition, on the weekend of February, we have the special treat of a professional jazz musician from New York City coming to us named Deanna Witkowski. She is on the forefront of a genre of church music called Sacred Jazz, which is different than most kinds of jazz worship in that Deanna presents contemporary jazz as a seamless part of the Eucharist service. She has also composed original jazz settings for the non-hymn service music in our services like the Gloria, Kyrie Eleison, the Sanctus, Agnus Dei, etc. Deanna will be presenting a workshop opened to the whole Diocese and beyond on Saturday 19 February from 10am, with light pupus provided. She will then be with us on Sunday 20 February at our 9am service and will lead us in Sacred Jazz. An additional benefit for us is that the cost of her being with us is completely underwritten by the Diocese in the form of two grants from the Discipleship Department of the Diocesan Council and the Emerging Generations Group of the Diocese (part of whose task is to encourage creative expressions of church worship), so we can enjoy Deanna and offer her broadly to other churches without negatively impacting our own church budget. Finally, our very own Michael Little is in the process of composing contemporary versions of the service music. He hopes to be ready with the Kyrie in time for Lent in less than two months. I close with the Bible s vision for inclusive and multifaceted music, the last psalm of the Bible, Psalm 150: 1. Praise the LORD! Praise God in the sanctuary; give praise in the mighty heavenly firmament! 2. Give praise for God s mighty deeds; give praise according to God s surpassing greatness! 3. Give praise with trumpet sound; give praise with lute and harp!

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 3 4. Give praise with tambourine and dance; give praise with strings and pipe! 5. Give praise with clanging cymbals; give praise with loud clashing cymbals! 6. Let everything that breathes praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! Your fellow traveler on the Journey, Fr. David+ Epiphany Day Pageant January 6, 2011 Coinciding with the day of the Epiphany on the church calendar, it was also Epiphany Church s 101 st birthday. Costumed Sunday school students and young adults walked slowly down the aisle, poised and dignified, as each of the character roles was announced. Mary with baby Jesus, Joseph, angels, shepherds with sheep, magi bearing gifts, all were well-rehearsed. The narrators, Shawn Sueoka and Tamara Sato, read their parts exhibiting professional reporter s skills. Mary (Sydnee Kokubun), Joseph (Ryne Sato) The audience participated by singing carols to the accompaniment of organists Karen Leatherman and Donald Matsumori. The event was directed and produced by Sunday School teachers: Gail and Marcus Pottenger, Carrie- Ann Kokubun, Alex Yee and Chandra Namumnart. Shawn and Tamara The cast Cast members: Sydnee Kokubun (Mary); Ryne Sato (Joseph); Diana Sellner and Kristi Namumnart (Angels); Caleb Jackson, Bubba Shea, Kyle Namumnart (Shepherds); Emily Shea, Nathan Sellner, Koa Sueoka (Kings); Shawn Sueoka, Tamara Sato (Narrators). 4 February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 4 January 9, 2011 Annual Meeting Fr. David Jackson conducted the Epiphany s Annual Meeting after the 8 a.m. combined services. Committee reports were distributed, including the 2011 budget. We give thanks for those who willingly serve on the Vestry and various committees and applaud those who served in Epiphany is privileged to have representation in the form of Diocesan Convention delegates, Diocesan Council, and General Convention delegates. The 2011 Vestry nominees elected by acclamation are: Earleene Garvey, Bruce Hanohano, Frank Lange and Clifford Shive. Diocesan Council nominees, also elected by acclamation are: Christine Hanaoka and Mary Sueoka. The new position of Youth Representative has been created and is being filled by Emily Shea. January 9, 2011 Baptism of Ashton Yee At an appropriate time in our church calendar, Ashton Yee (born July 24, 2010), was baptized on the first Sunday of Epiphanytide. Left:Christopher and Daralyn Hadden, Godparents; Aaron and Sharilyn Yee, parents, Ashton, Fr. Jackson In attendance at the ceremony were grandparents Karena and Dexter Yee and Richlyn and Jason Young. Front row: Kevin Simon, Carrie-Ann Kokubun, Emily Shea, Christine Hanaoka, Wilma Naumumnart, Barton Low. Back row: Clifford Shive, Bruce Hanohano, Earleene Garvey, Fr. Jackson, Frank Lange, Glenn Shea. Reviewing the year and all the activities that have occurred in our parish makes one wonder about the high-octane energy Fr. David displays! It is requisite for the relaxation of the mind that we make use, from time to time, of playful deeds and jokes. (Thomas Aquinas, via Fr. Charlie Urnick, Laughlin, NV) Ashton Yee and Fr. Jackson Ashton has been attending services regularly at Epiphany since he was a month old. We welcome him into Epiphany s Ohana! (Photos by Portia Okamoto)

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 5 Epiphany Awards Service Crosses For 2011, service crosses were awarded to two deserving and outstanding members, Ann Weers and Donald Matsumori at our Annual Meeting, January 9, As he presented the awards, Fr. Jackson expressed gratitude for the contributions these outstanding individuals have made to our church community over the years. Ann Weers has been a member of Epiphany church for ten years. She has served on: the Outreach Committee, the Vestry, the Discernment Committee (support team) for Kaimi Ganotise, Eucharistic minister, Eucharistic visitor and reader. In addition, she is the buyer (especially for the Refreshment Committee); a chauffeur for parishioners needing rides and manages to find time to golf, hula, and walks miles per week. Donald Matsumori More New Years Resolutions Fr. Moki: (To his students) Never leave school; never go to bed without forgiving someone. Kaimi Ganotise: Constantly listening to his Advocate (the Holy Spirit). Portia Okamoto: My goal for 2011, is to go free spiritually, by using the Release Technique Where nothing and no one will ever bother you again. A place where you can eliminate all of your I can t s and turn them into I can's, by discharging ALL the accumulated negative feelings." Ann Weers As a result of being the child of a military career man, she spent 18 of her early years in Argentina and speaks fluent Spanish. Donald Matsumori, PhD. came to Epiphany in 2006 as our senior organist. He attended Epiphany School as a youngster and grew up Kaimuki, less than a block from Epiphany. He attended Roosevelt High School, studied Business Administration at University of Hawaii with music as an avocation, and earned his PhD. at University of Southern California. In 2008, Donald generously provided the seed money to purchase our Johannus-M.P.Möller pipe and digital organ. He religiously practices two hours daily on the organ. Donald cares for a disabled friend, enjoys taking classes at UH and spends time on the computer. You can read more about him in the August 2010 issue of Hoku Makoi. Fr. Jackson: In 2011 read the Apocrypha (books between Old and New Testaments); learn to play the ukulele. Micki Hall: Wants to become a Wounded Warrior visitor (to help the wounded military at Tripler hospital). Peter Wu: Keeping the faith; never losing hope; always loving -- the best way to live. It s never too late to make a resolution any time during the year! Corrections In our January issue we had a few errors. In Christmas Eve 2010, page 1, we mentioned those responsible for arranging the pew bouquets. We erroneously credited Mary Shishido, when we should have credited Jeanne Ogimoto. On page 2, a picture showing Dwight Synan and sons, we misspelled Jenner s name. Our apologies to all. The Editor

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 8 Epiphany Outreach Committee By Wayne Akana January 11, 2011 Aloha Harvest Food that was collected in November and December was picked up on 12/20/10. Camp Mokuleia Karen Leatherman, Wilma Naumumnart and Debbi Alameda of Camp Mokuleia met on 1/14/11 to select fabric for the Epiphany sewers to sew: 18 tablecloths, 40 twin bed bedspreads, 2 double bedspreads and bed skirts for all the beds. The sewing date is not yet set. Center for Aging Tee shirts and socks were donated by an Epiphany and delivered to Lorraine Yap for the Disabled Veterans. The Committee recommends that the congregation be asked for donations for the disabled vets on a quarterly basis. COHORT-McCray Young Adult Bible Study The Committee recommends that Epiphany continue with providing one dinner a month to the COHORT young adult bible study group. If the Vestry agrees Wayne will ask Mike Woods what night COHORT will be having its bible study and determine which week Epiphany will provide dinner. Approximately $50 - $60 was spent for each meal. (Except for the VERY generous Thanksgiving meal prepared by Epiphany s Ohana!) Hawai`i State Hospital Deacon Pat Reynolds was providing a monthly service for the patients at the Hawaii State Hospital. Previously the Vestry approved providing snacks for the service participants. As far as anyone can tell Epiphany has not provided funds to purchase the snacks. The Committee recommends recommitting funds for the snacks for Deacon Pat s HSH outreach ministry. If the Vestry agrees Wayne will contact Deacon Pat and determine if she is still participating in this ministry, what date/time the service is held, the number of people attending, etc. Then the Outreach Committee will ask if anyone who lives on the Windward side would be interested in taking on the purchasing and transporting the snacks to Pat and the HSH folks who participate in the service. Institute for Human Services Currently Epiphany allots $400 for each meal Karena and DexterYee coordinate for IHS residents every other month. The Committee recommends that this ministry continue to be funded for Military Deployed Service Members The Committee recommends that the effort to support our Hawaii deployed service members be restarted. Folks need to reach out to their contacts for names or organizations that support military personnel. Wayne Akana will approach Mike Woods at St. Peters. Karen Leatherman will check with her son Dan. Will ask Wilma Naumumnart to check with her son. Others are encouraged to gather information about deployed military companies that Epiphany can send care packages a couple times a year. If the Vestry decides to continue with this ministry someone will need to chair this project. St. Patrick s Palolo Food Pantry Wayne Akana delivered the two 22 lbs bags of rice and one bag of canned goods to the Palolo Food Pantry on 1/14/11. The St. Patrick s staff at the Food Pantry informed that this was their last day of operation. All remaining food will be given to another food pantry located in Manoa valley. In light of this new information Wayne recommends that the financial donations ($100/month) be discontinued and that food donations go to the Aloha Harvest organization who picks up the donated food. Waikiki Health Center Twelve bags of food and four bags of toiletries were delivered by Susan Shea. The Committee recommends that Epiphany continue to donate non-perishable food and toiletries to the Waikiki Health Center. YO-Homeless Youth Outreach Epiphany, through the Sheas, has prepared a meal once a month to the homeless youth in Waikiki in The cost has been about $50 per meal. The Committee recommends that this ministry continue. New members Peter Wu and Mary Sueoka are welcome additions to the Outreach Committee. (This is Wayne Akana s final report as he moves on to other responsibilites Mahalo for his excellent reporting. The Editor)

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 9 Nutrition & Health At many year-end holiday parties, somehow conversation gravitates to New Year s resolutions, especially on topics of diet and fitness. You ve probably heard dialogue like, Well, my doctor thinks I need to lose 20 pounds. Another will say, Mine says I should enroll in a fitness program. Magazines, newspaper columnists, talk show hosts and comedians all jump on the bandwagon and have a field day on the same subject. The November issue of Prevention magazine had an article entitled, Feel Great In A Flash. It gave sixteen smart solutions on topics ranging from sleep to lower blood pressure. These tips come from a new book by The Doctors. Here are some samples. In 20 seconds you can decrease your risk of heart disease and diabetes. In 30 second you can lower your blood pressure. In 40 seconds you can cut a junk food craving. In 90 seconds you can sidestep a hangover. In 3 minutes you can reduce bad cholesterol. In 4 minutes you can boost your brain power. In 12 minutes you can prevent Alzheimers. If we combine their suggestions with the following recipes (from the same issue), maybe we can achieve success in improving our health. Worth a try?? (An editorial comment.) Broccoli-Peanut Salad ¼ c. white wine vinegar 3 Tbsp. Canola oil (substitute olive oil) 3 Tbsp. Peanut butter 1 Tbsp reduced sodium soy sauce ½ tsp salt 1 lb. Broccoli, tops cut into small florets and stems peeled and chopped ¼ c. dried cherries, cranberries, or raisins ¼ c. roasted peanuts, chopped Whisk together vinegar, oil, peanut butter, soy sauce and salt in a large bowl. Toss with broccoli and dried fruit and season with salt to taste. Served topped with peanuts. Can be made up to 2 days ahead. 4 servings Quick Chicken Divan 8 oz gemelli, rotini or ziti 1 lb. Broccoli, tops cut into florets and stems peeled and sliced 1 Tbsp. Butter (substitution allowed) 2 tsp. Dried basil 4-1/2 tsp. All-purpose flour 1 c. reduced-sodium chicken broth 2/3 c. 2% milk ¾ tsp. Salt 1 sm rotisserie chicken, meat pulled off the bone (2-1/2 to 3 c. total) ½ c. shredded cheese Boil pasta. Add broccoli during last 5 minutes. Drain. Melt butter with basil in pasta pot and stir in flour. When light brown, whisk in broth, milk and salt. Bring to a boil. Toss with chicken, pasta/broccoli mixture and cheese. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 4 servings (Recipes from Prevention, November.2011) Holy Trinity and Football By Sharon Muramaru The New Orleans Saints uses the fleur- de- lys as their team logo. Fleur in French means flower and lis means lily or iris. The fleur de- lys was taken from the symbol most associated with the city of New Orleans. It origins pays tribute to the city s historical French roots and its influence from the French monarchy during the 12 th century. King Louis VII was the first king to put the symbol on his shield. English kings later put it on their coats of arms, to emphasize their claim to the French throne. Its origins are from the baptismal lily used in the crowning of King Clovis I. Legends claim that even the lily itself appeared at the baptismal ceremony as a gift of blessing in an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church endorsed the legend by associating Mary with the symbol. Today you can see the symbol on the helmet and jerseys worn by the New Orleans Saints Football team. They have used the emblem on their uniforms since A diamond encrusted

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 10 fleur- de- lys adorns the top of the team s super bowl rings made by Tiffany Co. for their 2010 win. The Big Easy, as New Orleans likes to be called, has a great affection for the symbol and it can be seen everywhere in the city when you visit. It is the symbol found on the flag of the city. Since Hurricane Katrina, citizens have displayed this symbol on their homes, in gardens and on signs, with pride. Due to the three petals the fleur-de-lys also has been used to represent the Holy Trinity. The symbol has been used in various forms on many religious crosses over the centuries. Do you see the fleurs-de-lys here? The language of God is silence. If we paid attention to hearing and listening in our daily lives, perhaps we can be better attuned to God s language. The current vernacular of listen up can be uplifting. Did You Know that Webster Tom is probably one of the hardest workers on the Welcome Committee? Have you ever noticed the smiles on newcomers or visitors to Epiphany when they pass the fragrant, blooming white ginger that was planted by Webster? Watch their faces, do you see what I see? (Submitted by Portia Okamoto) that Webster Tom also painstakingly printed all the labels affixed to the kitchen cabinet doors and drawers? He did that so all the contents are no longer mysteries. Reflections By Lori Priore ASAP Hear ye! Listen up! Snatches of conversation are frequently food for thought or occasion for a smile. These are comments casually overheard in public places in the course of everyday life. This is not eavesdropping but simply picking up on the freeflow of language wherever people gather. A sampling of comments I have overheard: Don t talk about the worst because it already happened. She didn t get mad and that made me scared. One sibling telling a younger sibling. Don t tell mom I gave you money. She should be thankful for what she is. Mother talking about her son. I remember the day he turned into a teenager. He began to give one word responses. Ever wonder about the abbreviation A.S.A.P.? Generally, we think of it in terms of even more hurry and stress in our lives. Maybe if we think of this abbreviation in a different manner, we will begin to find a new way to

February 2011 Volume 9 - Number 2 Page 11 deal with those rough days along the way.
