For I bear witness to them that they have zeal for God, but a zeal that is not informed. Gospel: Luke 1: 1-25, 56-68, 76, 80 Nativity of the Honorable and Glorious Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist Since many writers have undertaken to draw up a narrative concerning the things that have been fulfilled among us even as they who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I also have determined, after following up all things carefully from the very first, to write for you, most excellent Theophilus, an orderly account, that you may understand the certainty of the words in which you have been instructed. In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah, of the course of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were just before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. But they had no child, for Elizabeth was barren; and they were both advanced in years. Now it came to pass, while he was officiating in the order of his course as priest before God, according to the custom of the priest s office, that he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord to burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right of the altar of incense. And Zechariah, seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, Do not be afraid Zechariah, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son and you shall call his name John. And you shall have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great before the Lord; he shall drink no wine or strong drink, and shall be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother s womb. And many of the children of Israel he shall bring back to the Lord their God, and he himself shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just; to prepare for the Lord a perfect people. And Zechariah asked the angel, How shall I know this? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years. And the angel answered and said to him, I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news And behold, you shall be dumb and unable to speak until the day when these things come to pass, because you have not believed my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time. And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his tarrying so long in the temple But when he did come out he could not speak to them, and they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them, and remained dumb. And it came to pass, when the days of his service were completed, that he went back home. Now after these days Elizabeth his wife conceived, and she secluded herself five months, saying, Thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days when he deigned to take away my reproach among men Now her time was fulfilled that she should be delivered, and she - brought forth a son. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him by his father s name, Zechariah. But his mother spoke up and said, Not so, but he shall be called John And they said to her, No one in your family is called by this name And they kept inquiring by signs of his father what he would have him called. And asking for a writing-tablet he wrote the words, John is his name. And they all marveled. And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak, blessing God. And fear came on all their neighbors and all these things were told abroad in all the hill country of Judea. And all who heard them kept them in their heart, saying, What then will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him And Zechariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and wrought redemption for his people. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. 3 العزيز ثاوفيلس لتعرف ص حة الكالم الذي وعظ ت به. كان في أيام هيرودس ملك اليهودية كاهن اسمه زكري ا من فرق ة أ بي ا. وامرأت ه من بنات ه رون اسم ها اليصابات. وكانا كالهما بار ين امام هللا سائر ي ن في جميع وصايا الرب واحكام ه بغي ر لوم. ولم يكن لهما ولد ألن اليصابات كانت عاقرا وكانا كالهما قد تقد ما في ايام هما. وبينما كان يكه ن في نوبة فرق ته اما م هللا اصاب ت ه القرعة على عادة الخدمة المقدسة ان يدخل هيكل الرب وي ب خ ر. وكان كل جمهور الشعب ي صل ي خارجا في وقت التبخير. فتراءى له مالك الرب واقفا عن يمين مذبح البخور. فاضطر ب زكري ا حين رآه ووقع عليه خوف. فقال له المالك: ال ت خ ف يا زكري ا فإن طلبتك قد أستجيب ت وامرأت ك اليصابات ستلد لك ابنا ف ت سميه يوحن ا. ويكون لك فرح وابتهاج ويفرح كثيرون بمولده. فانه سيكون عظيما امام الرب وال يشرب خمرا وال م سك را وسيمتلئ من الروح القد س وهو بعد في بطن ام ه. ويرد كثيرين من بني اسرائيل الى الرب اله هم. وهو يسير أمام ه بروح ايلي ا وقدرته لي ر د قلوب اآلباء الى االبناء والعصاة الى ح كمة االبرار وي هيئ للرب شعبا م ستعدا. فقال زكري ا للمالك: ب م أ عرف هذا فاني شي خ وامرأتي قد تقد مت في أ يا مها. فأجاب المالك وقال له: انا جبرائيل الواقف امام هللا وقد أ رسلت أل كل م ك وأ بش رك بهذا. وها إنك تكون صامتا فال تتكل م الى يوم يكون هذا ألنك لم ت صدق كالمي الذي سي تم في اوانه. وكان الشعب منتظرين زكري ا متعجبين من إ بطائه في الهيكل. فلما خرج لم يستطع ان يكل مهم فعلموا أنه قد رأى رؤيا في الهيكل. اما هو فكان ي شير اليهم وبقي أ بكم. ولما تم ت ايام خدمت ه مضى الى بيته. ومن بعد تلك االيام حبلت اليصابات امرأته فاختبأت خمسة اشهر قائلة : هكذا صنع بي الرب في االيام التي نظر الي فيها ليصرف عني العار بين الناس. فلما تم زمان وضعها ولدت ابنا. فسمع جيران ها واقارب ها أ ن الرب قد عظ م رحمته لها ففرحوا معها. وفي اليوم الثامن جاؤوا ليختنوا الصبي فد ع وه باسم ابيه زكري ا. فأجابت أم ه قائله : كال بل ي دعى يوحن ا. فقالوا لها: ليس احد في قراب تك ي دعى بهذا االسم. ثم اومأوا الى أبيه ماذا ي ريد ان ي سم ى. فطلب لوحا وكتب فيه قائال : اسم ه يوحن ا. فتعجبوا كل هم. وفي الحال انفتح ف م ه ولسان ه وتكلم مباركا هللا. فحل خوف على جميع جيرانهم وت ح د ث بهذه االمور كل ها في جميع جبال اليهودية. وكان جميع الذين سمعوا بذلك يحفظونه في قلب هم ويقولون: ما عسى ان يكون هذا الصبي وكانت يد الرب معه. وامتأل ابوه زكري ا من الروح الق دس وتنب أ قائال : مبارك الرب اله اسرائيل ألنه افتقد وصنع ف داء لشعبه. وانت ايها الصبي نبي العلي ت دعى ألنك تسب ق امام وجه الرب لت ع د ط ر ق ه. وكان الصبي ينمو ويتقوى بالروح وكان في البراري الى يوم ظهور ه إل سرائيل. June 24 (Nativity of St John the Forerunner) Harbinger of the Sun OUR CHURCH CALENDAR remembers many events in Christian history: martyrdoms, ecumenical councils, miracles, and even earthquakes. There are only three births celebrated, however: that of the Theotokos (September 8), the Nativity of Christ Himself (December 25) and the birth of St John the Forerunner (June 24). We do not know where or when this feast was first observed, but it is mentioned in writings of fourth- and fifth-century Fathers in both East and West (Saints Ambrose, Augustine and John Chrysostom). The oldest shrine of the Forerunner, at Ain-Karem, home of his parents Zachariah and Elizabeth, was destroyed during the fifth-century revolt of the Samaritans against Byzantine rule. In the sixth century the French Council of Agde (506) declared this feast a holyday of obligation not surprising, considering the esteem in which Christ Himself considered John (see Mt 11:11). John s Conception Foretold The Gospel story of John s conception and birth, which is the Biblical basis of this feast, is found in Luke 1. We read that John s father, Zachariah, was a priest of the division of Abijah (Lk 1:4). According to the custom of the day, priests were enrolled in various groupings or divisions which took turns serving in the temple for two weeks at a time. The Gospel says that, while Zachariah was offering incense in the temple, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that Elizabeth, Zachariah s wife, would bear him a son, who was to be named John. Zachariah could not understand how this could be, as both he and his wife were up in years. Because of his reluctance to believe, Zachariah was told by the angel, Behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time (Lk 1:20). And so it happened. John and Elijah The angel tells Zachariah that his son would go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Lk 1:17). In this promise we find an echo of the following prophecy from the Book of Malachi, the last of the Old Testament prophetic books. Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse (Mal 4:5-6). In some arrangements of the Bible, these are the last words of the Old Testament, pointing it forward to the Messianic Age to come. Believing Jews held that Elijah would come to prepare the way for the Messiah. Many saw John as Elijah, the fulfillment of that prophecy, foretelling to all the coming of Christ. As the Lord Himself said about John, If you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come (Mt 11:14). Clearly, John is not some kind of reincarnation of the 9 th century BC prophet, but he is said to have come in the spirit and power of Elijah. The Forerunner Is Born

St Augustine saw Zachariah s muteness as symbolic of the time before Christ and viewed his release as an image of its passing. The release of Zachariah s voice at the birth of John, he wrote, has the same significance as the tearing of the veil of the Temple at the crucifixion of Christ. His tongue is released because a voice is being born the voice of one crying in the wilderness. The Canticle of Zachariah The Gospel records as Zachariah s praise of God a beautiful hymn which has found a place in the liturgy of both East and West. Often given the title Benedictus (from the first word of the Latin translation), this hymn is for the most part a string of verses from the psalms and other Old Testament texts. It glorifies God for His greatness and for the love He has shown to His people. Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, who have been since the world began, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, to perform the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant, the oath which He swore to our father Abraham: to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life At this point the hymn begins to make specific reference to John. He is described with what some have called the clarity of hindsight as prophet, forerunner, and preacher of repentance. These are, of course, the qualities which the Gospels attribute to John during his ministry at the Jordan. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His way to give knowledge of salvation to His people by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, with which the Orient from on high has visited us; to give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace (Lk 1:76-79). In our liturgy this canticle is added to the hymn of the Virgin at the ninth ode of orthros during the Fasts. The One from the East The word anatole, translated above as Orient, would be used repeatedly in our hymns referring to Christ. Sometimes it is translated as Dayspring, or as the One who rises. We hear it in the Christmas troparion ( to recognize in You the One who rises from on high ). In the troparion Dance, O Isaiah sung at crownings and ordinations the word is translated as His name is Orient. The word anatole literally means sunrise and, by extension, the East (where the sun rises). It invokes the image of the rising sun, which itself is an image of Christ. He is the Dayspring, the Sunrise, of God s saving plan for us. As the sunrise brings the promise of a new day, the appearance of Christ brings the assurance that the Kingdom of God is now at hand. As we sing in the exapostilarion of Christmas, From on high our Savior came, the rising Sun who shone from the East. And John is the herald of that rising Sun.
