2 Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker On Saturday, Dec. 5, the Armenian Church remembered St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (also called Nikolaos of Myra, AD). St. Nicholas was born in the southern part of Asia Minor which is now called Turkey. Who was St. Nicholas? Children know him as 'Santa Claus,' others know him as the patron of sailors; we know him as a pious, loving of the Church and true follower of Jesus Christ. How did he attain such renown? Nicholas didn't try to achieve fame. All he did was try to fulfill the command to love God with all his heart, and to love his neighbor as himself. It was his service to God and man that gained from him such universal esteem. Nicholas was raised well by pious and well-to-do parents. When his parents died, Nicholas was left a considerable inheritance. He could have lived a life of leisure and pleasure. But he heard the call of Christ and gave his wealth to the poor and needy. He was truly a teacher of abstinence. Having inherited his parents' estate, he became known for his generous gifts to those in need. He was subsequently consecrated Archbishop of Myra as the fourth century began. His feast was being celebrated by the time of St. Justinian two centuries after his death. St. Nicholas is called the "Wonder-Worker." Indeed, many are the wonders that he is said to have worked in the years of his life. Perhaps the greatest wonder is that he simply took Christ at His word and followed Him with all his heart and soul. He showed that the true Christian life can be lived. Ս. Մատթ. 19:21), իր կեանքի նշանաբանը կը դարձնէ` խնամելով աղքատները, հիվանդները, բանտարկեալները և որբերը: Ժողովուրդի կամքով կը դառնայ Զմիւռնիոյ եպիսկոպոսը: Հալածանքներու ընթացքին կ աքսորուի, սակայն չի դադրիր ամենուր Աւետարանը քարոզելէն: Խաղաղութիւն վերահաստատուելուն պես կը վերադառնա իր աթոռը, կը մասնակցի 325 թուականի Նիկիոյ Տիեզերաժողովին: Մահացած է 326 թուականին: Ընդհանրական Եկեղեցու ամենասիրուած սուրբերէն է`առաւելաբար յայտնի «Սանտա Կլաուս» անուամբ:

TODAY S SCRIPTURE READING The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ According to Luke (14:12-24) He said also to the one who had invited him, When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. The Parable of the Great Dinner One of the dinner guests, on hearing this, said to him, Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God! Then Jesussaid to him, Someone gave a great dinner and invited many. At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, Come; for everything is ready now. But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my regrets. Another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my regrets. Another said, I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come. So the slave returned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. And the slave said, Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room. Then the master said to the slave, Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those who were invited will taste my dinner.
