1 Trinity Episcopal Church 815 N. Grant Street, Bay City, MI Telephone: March 2014 Volume 19 Issue 03 Pennings from your priest... If you are in Rio de Janeiro between the Friday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday you cannot avoid Carnival. In this country the most famous place for pre- Lenten revelry is New Orleans where Mardi Gras is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. No matter which of those two cities you are in you will witness a combination circus and street party with floats, masquerading, beads, masks and throws. We who are of a religious persuasion observe Shrove Tuesday on the day before Ash Wednesday. Originally Shrove Tuesday was a day of repentance. In fact, the word shrove is the past tense of shrive. It means to confess and receive absolution. Foods such as meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as inappropriate for Lent. In order that those foods not go to waste many families would hold huge feasts on Shrove Tuesday so that they could consume those foodstuffs that would spoil during the forty days of Lent. It was from that custom that Carnival and Mardi Gras developed. Because the Episcopal Church is English in its origins many parishes observe the English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday so that as much milk, fats and eggs as possible could be used up before the beginning of Lent. This year, Trinity Church is going a bit more decadent for Shrove Tuesday. We are throwing our own Mardi Gras celebration (Not your mama s pancake supper) with a distinctly New Orleans menu prepared by our own resident chef Sean Brady. The Sunday School children will make beignets and learn about the tradition of using up the milk, fat and eggs before Lent commences. The Reivers Band will provide musical entertainment. And we will have a mask-making table for anyone who wishes to celebrate with a mask. I hope you will join in the fun. Then, It is down to business the business of observing what our prayer book calls a holy Lent. What constitutes a holy Lent? Self-examination and repentance; prayer, fasting and self-denial; and reading and meditating on God s holy Word. We begin this process with Ash Wednesday, the Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion, on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 7:00 PM. The entire Lent and Holy Week schedule is listed in full elsewhere in The Chimes. The Sunday School has selected its own Lenten project called Let us Get our House in Order, which it is beginning on Sunday, March 9 following worship. All children and families are encouraged to donate an hour of time. That is also a perfect name for the disciplines surrounding Lent. By engaging in those disciplines set forth for a holy Lent we are, in effect, working to get our spiritual houses in order for the Risen Christ on Easter. During Lent I will be offering an opportunity for informal discussion. Everything well maybe not everything you ever wanted to know about being an Episcopalian but were afraid to ask is open to anyone. Whether you are a cradle Episcopalian or someone new to the denomination, whether you are young or not so Page 1
2 young come with your questions and we will try to answer them and have some fun in the process. Remember that during Lent we do not say Alleluia anywhere in the liturgy. We do not utter that word again until Easter. We will be using Rite I and saying the psalm responsively rather than using a cantor. I hope to see you during this most penitential of seasons so that together we may observe a holy Lent in preparation for the Alleluias of Easter. Blessings Rev. Ann Rev. Ann front of the nave. When everyone is spread out it is hard to hear other people singing. Sitting together will also help in building community. Good hymn singing is one sign of a healthy parish. If for some reason you can t sing you are still encouraged to open the hymnal and follow the text of what is being sung. The poetry of the hymns contributes a great deal to every worship service. MARCH EVENSONG Evensong on the first Sunday of Lent will feature all Renaissance ( ) music. That includes the organ voluntaries, hymns, canticles and anthem. Members of Exultate Deo will be the choir for the service. Please join us for this special worship service and bring a friend. We will be going to Rite I language and using the Healey Willan mass setting. PARISH SINGING This is to encourage everyone to be more involved and enthusiastic in singing of the liturgy and the hymns. It would help a great deal if everyone sat together in the Page 2 9 Lent I The Apple Tree K. The Historical Guild s Outreach this year is to supply RADA Knives and Accessories for Trinity s kitchen. Pat Maxim inventoried the kitchen and prepared a list of knives and accessories that was desired to make Trinity s Kitchen s - Food of Faith Outreach even better. From the profits obtained May 2013 to date from the selling of the RADA Knives and Accessories plus Fruit/Vegetable Dips and donations, the Historical Guild was able to purchase everything on Pat s list from the RADA Company for Trinity s kitchen! On January 28th, the Historical Guild presented to Pat Maxim all 37 items that were on the list Pat compiled! There were a variety of knives, serving forks, knife sharpener, pie and cake servers, food choppers, spreaders and spatulas, serving spoons, cutting mats, and ice cream scoops. She will now go through the utensils that Trinity has had, add the new RADA knives and accessories, and move on the utensils that need to be moved on! Pat will then make an additional list of items that could be of benefit for Trinity s kitchen. The Historical Guild would like to THANK everyone who has already purchased RADA Knives, Accessories, and Fruit/Vegetable Dips! The sale will continue through May 15th. Some items are on hand for purchase; catalogs are available during Page 3 Birthdays: March 6 March 8 March 12 March 12 March 12 March 14 March 15 March 22 March 23 March 25 March 26 March 26 March 30 March 30 March 31 Anniversaries March 13 March 17 Aniesha McCullough Emily Gray Sean Brady Gloria Davenport Gary Hadden Adam Culler Denise Morin Jane Moulthrop Russell Taglauer Steven Beckert Ethan DuFresne Matthew Smith Moria Brady Carla Maxim Tracey Krzysik William and Karen Schmidt Russell and Nancy Taglauer Feb 3 Frank & Gloria Davenport Feb 10 Frank Davenport Birthday Sorry, I missed these last month!
