People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made, for you do not hate. You forgive the sins of all who are sorry, for you are love. Create and make in us new and humble hearts, that as we tell the truth about our sins, we receive from you, the God of mercy, total forgiveness. We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and rules with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Sing together Jesus loves me, this I know Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong. They are weak, but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Blow the trumpet in Zion; make a holy fast; call a solemn assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the children, even the babies. The bride and groom should come too. Between the door and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep. Let them say, Spare your people, O Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2 Jesus said, be careful about showing your faith in front of other people in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from God in heaven. And whenever you give to those in need, do not show off so that you may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, the show-offs already have their reward. But when you give to those in need, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be done in private; and God who sees everything will reward you. And whenever you pray, do not show off so that you may be seen by others. I assure you the show-offs already have their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to God who is everywhere and God will reward you. And whenever you give up something for someone else, let only God see what you are doing. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please be seated for The Homily Ruth Beresford After the Homily, all stand, and the Celebrant invites the people to the observance of a holy Lent. The Imposition of Ashes Dear People of God: The first Christians remembered with great devotion the days of the Lord s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for those days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day by a season of penance and fasting. This season of Lent provided time when people were prepared for Holy Baptism. In those days when someone had been very hurtful or cruel, they were separated from the body of the faithful and were not allowed to receive communion. Lent became a time when those who were separated were reconciled by saying they were sorry and meaning it, receiving forgiveness, and being welcomed back into the fellowship of the Church. Because of this reconciliation, everybody in the congregation was more aware of the message of pardon found in the Gospel of Jesus. The people were also aware of the need all Christians always have to ask for forgiveness and strength for our faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to keep a holy Lent, by thoughtfulness about who you are and what you have done; by turning to God and asking for forgiveness; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and reflecting on God s holy Word. And, to make a good beginning of our work in asking forgiveness, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. Silence is then kept for a time, all kneeling.

3 The Celebrant says the following prayer Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of the shortness of our lives and our remorse, so that we may remember that it is only by your grace that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. The ashes are imposed with the following words Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. After receiving ashes, please kneel or be seated for An Anthem Jeff Reeves Create in me a clean heart, make my spirit right and true. Guide me with your wisdom, Lord, as I seek to follow you. Refrain Create in me a clean heart, give me strength to trust and obey. Call me with your voice of love to the light of your perfect way. Refrain Restore in me your joy, the gift of life anew; and then shall my mouth sing songs of praise for all that comes from you. Refrain Refrain: God of creation and Lord of my life, show me how I can be more like you in all that I do, in word and thought and deed. Litany of Penitence Leader We say, Leader That we don t think much about you. Leader That we use your name cheaply. Leader That we don t listen to you. Leader That we make you sad. Leader That we forget your love. Leader For not forgiving others as you forgive us. Leader For not caring enough about the people around us. Leader For wasting resources and polluting your world. Leader That we don t notice or do enough to help when other people suffer. Leader For our temper tantrums. Leader For thinking we are all alone.

4 People We re sorry, God, for not loving you, for not loving our neighbors; for all that we have done and all that we have left undone. Please forgive us and help us begin anew, that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Priest stands, faces the people, and says The Absolution God does not want you to suffer in sin. God sent Jesus so that we would turn from despair and live in peace and love with God and with everyone. So through the Church God has given power to the ministers to declare God s pardon to those who are truly sorry and want to begin again, trusting in the Good News of Jesus. Therefore we ask God to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that what we do today may please him, and that each day for the rest of our lives we may be good and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy. This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Leader People Leader People Complete in us the work of your salvation, That we may show forth your glory in the world. By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord, Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection. Please stand for The Peace Priest The peace of the Lord be always with you. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. You bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in

5 works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and People Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace. Help us to be obedient to your call to love all your children, to do justice, to show mercy, and to live in peace with your whole creation. At the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this

6 we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. The Communion of the People All are welcome to receive. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. Please kneel for The Post-Communion Prayer God of compassion, through your Son Jesus Christ you reconciled your people to yourself. Following his example of prayer and fasting, may we obey you with willing hearts and serve one another in holy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. When I am helped to see what s good, and led to do the things I should, I thank you, caring God above, for life and hands and heart and love. Dismissal Priest Let us bless the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Just as at the beginning, the Choir and Celebrant leave in quiet. We go out thinking about all that we have said and the gift of God s love in Christ Jesus that we have shared and have to share with others who weren t here. God bless you.
