Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Happy Easter! We are happy you are taking a moment to see what s happening at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church at this joyful time of the year. Although we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus all throughout the year, Easter is a reminder of new beginnings and the hope we find in the risen Christ. Inside this issue you ll find announcements and articles on upcoming gatherings and projects here at St. Francis and our work in the community. We hope you ll join us as we fellowship together. All are welcome here! For more information, feel free to contact us at (423) or sfaec@comcast.net. Be sure to check us out on Facebook too and like our page. The Hoot is published by St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church. The deadline for the May Issue is April 23. If you would like to submit an article or announcement for the May Hoot, please send it to sfaec@comcast.net. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 3
Message from our Rector For those who receive our Newsletter via , and peruse it when it arrives, you may be reading this in the midst of Good Friday. Some will be returning for services at church, while others will be planning to attend in the hours ahead. But for all of us, regardless of our participation at St. Francis, we are in the midst of the Triduum. According to An Episcopal Dictionary for the Church: Triduum is a period of three days of preparation for a feast day. The term is most frequently used for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, the three days prior to Easter Sunday that are the concluding days of Holy Week, also known as the Easter Triduum. Other usage for the Easter Triduum reckons the days from the evening of Maundy Thursday through the evening of Easter Day. Year in and year out, so many work hard for the Queen of Feasts Easter Sunday. As with any preparations, great amounts of planning as well as hours of labor are required to convey the special quality of the day for all who attend. Key to our preparations is the careful planning and enacting of the days leading up to Easter the Triduum. Maundy Thursday begins joyfully as we sit at the table, pray, sing, wash feet and bless the amazing collection of shoes, socks, and foot care products for our Walk In Love Shoe Drive. But as we enter into sharing the Last Supper with our Lord, the mood begins to change. After sharing the Agape Meal, we move forward to watch the stripping of the Altar, the blessed bread and wine carried to the Chapel for the overnight Watching with Christ, and then walk into the darkness of that night in silence. 4
Good Friday begins with the Watch still kept in the Chapel until we walk the outside Stations of the Cross, carrying a cross between Stations, and then enter the Church for the Good Friday Liturgy with Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament. Again we leave in silence to the tolling of the bells. Holy Saturday is the briefest Liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer. We gather in the Memorial Garden for prayer and readings from Scripture. As we participate in this liturgy, we join with the women who followed Jesus in watching and waiting to see what the Third Day will bring. Then before dawn on Sunday we gather in the darkness of those early hours to light the new fire, process into the church, and listen to the Bible stories that recall God s mighty works through the ages. As the sun rises, the Good News is announced, and our joy spills over into the neighborhood as the shouts echo: Alleluia! Christ is risen! The rest of the morning is a continuation of that joyful celebration. Truly the rest of the month is a joyful celebration of Easter. Easter is not just one day, but a 50 day season remembering the news that has forever changed our lives. This is a time to be re-energized in our life in our Lord: A time to catch the fervor of celebration and share it with others in the world. It is the Risen Christ who walks with us and cares for us on our earthly journey. It is the Risen Christ who enables us to live as we proclaim: Find the Lost; Heal the Broken; Celebrate God s Love for All. Lou 5
ESTRY VIBES The St. Francis Vestry met on March 26: 32 families donated over $21,000 toward our HVAC. This will more than cover the amount of the Nave HVAC. The Vestry voted to move the excess into a separate fund that will help cover the cost of the office/classroom HVAC which will need to be replaced within the next 18 months. Much appreciation to everyone, especially Sandy Moore who handled the project from beginning to end, and that came in on time and under budget. A group in need of a new space to hold their yoga class reached out to Lou and the Vestry approved their use of The Katie Hall Activity Center on Mondays & Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Thank you everyone for the overwhelming response to our Walk-in-Love Shoe Drive. A record number of shoes, socks, and foot care products were collected for the homeless in our area. We are looking for ways to supplement our pastoral care ministry and are looking for not just volunteers, but also ideas. We are thinking of friendly phone calls, personal visits, meals, drives to doctor appointments, etc. For more information, please talk to any member of the Vestry. Our next Vestry Meeting is April 23 at 6:15 p.m. All are welcome. 6
HABITAT FAITH HOUSE DEDICATION Along with our fellow Faith House Partners, St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church celebrated with the Melvin Family at the March 22 Dedication of their new home. From start to finish, it was a real blessing to be a part of this home building project. Congratulations to the Melvin Family! 7
Upcoming Pilgrimage to Israel In November 2017, Sandy and I went to Israel and Jordan. It was truly a remarkable time and we were very grateful we had the opportunity to travel to this important and unique part of the world. Our trip was similar to the pilgrimage The Rev. Parsons made several years earlier. The tour guide in Israel, Canon Iyad Qumri, also led her pilgrimage group. He is a wonderful guide and as a Palestinian Christian he offers a unique perspective. The American tour guide, The Rev. Canon Earle King of Buffalo, NY, is organizing another pilgrimage to Israel for April 5-15, The schedule puts the group in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The Rev. King led our group and is also a wonderful guide. He has traveled to Israel many times and is quite knowledgeable. If you are interested in joining the 2019 group, Sandy and I would be happy to talk with you. We have a copy of the itinerary, as well as information on cost we can share with you. The Jordan portion of the trip is optional. It will be a small group, under 40 people, which is ideal. Persons of all faiths are welcome, as well as single travelers. If you have questions, please contact me at or gaymoore@comcast.net. Gay Moore 8
The call went out and St. Francis responded. Again! A few weeks ago the Vestry put out the message that the HVAC in our Nave was in need of replacement and the cost was so high that we didn t have the funds in our current budget to cover the expense. Over $21,000 was raised within a short amount of time, but what s most interesting are the numbers behind the numbers. Thirty-two families donated! Truly we are blessed with a thoughtful and caring congregation. Deris Bagli 9

WALK - IN - LOVE Another successful Shoe Drive We collected a record donation of shoes, socks and foot care products for our brothers and sisters in need. These items were blessed at our Maundy Thursday Service during Holy Week and will be delivered to the Chattanooga Community Kitchen for their ministry to the homeless. Another reason to say, Thank You to this wonderful parish and all those in the community who participated. We could not have done this without each one of you. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Matthew 25:40 12
St. Francis Wednesday Bible Study Resumes April 11 at 6:30 p.m. On April 11, we will begin discussing the book, Why Go to Church, by The Rev. Canon C.K. Robertson.
