Scholarly Essentials LIVING WITH PURPOSE
Titans celebrate virtue* in scholarship, relationships, and citizenship. Virtue: moral excellence Latin virtus Comes from the word man (vir); ideal way a human should act Moral: concerned with the principles or the distinction between right and wrong; ethical
Titans celebrate virtue* in scholarship, relationships, and citizenship. Citizenship: the character of an individual viewed as a member of society; behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen
Titans celebrate virtue in citizenship. Responsibilities Our school community values and intentionally demonstrates consistent responsibility. Titans value responsibilities above our rights. Titans strive to be our best, do our best, and give our best to the world.
CITIZENSHIP CITIZENSHIP: behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen Duty: something that one is expected or required to do by moral or legal obligation Obligation: something by which a person is bound or obliged to do certain things, and which arises out of a sense of duty or results from custom, law, etc. Function: the natural action or intended purpose of a person in a specific role
Being a Good Citizen Citizenship requires doing our share for our community and our country. Being a good citizen means caring about the good of society and participating actively to make things better.
Rights vs. Responsibilities Using the quote below, discuss how this relates to the definition of citizenship. Citizenship: behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what's in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. -Barack Obama
Rights vs. Responsibilities Titans value responsibilities above our rights.
Excerpt from Gazette Policy Respects Free not hate speech Vince Bzdek 20 August 2017 Back in the 1980s, when I was playing basketball for Colorado College, we once drove our bus to Colby, Kan., for a game on a bleak December weekend. I remember a few of us players going into a bar there and we started talking basketball with a farmer who was wearing a Dekalb hat and drinking Rolling Rock. I remember him bragging to us about how good Kansas teams were in general. And then he added the fact, rather nonchalantly, that Kansas didn't need black players on its team to win games. That they didn't really need black players in general. A couple of us CC players whispered to each other, "What century is this?" and shifted uncomfortably on our bar stools. We wondered if we should just ignore what he said, leave it at that. Or leave the bar and just let it go. We live in the country that invented the First Amendment, right? People can say whatever they want. Our captain, Colin Simpson, the son of Sen. Al Simpson of Wyoming, didn't think that was enough.
Excerpt from Gazette Policy Respects Free not hate speech Vince Bzdek 20 August 2017 He said, "Come on, let's go get Dez and Thad." We all got up, three or four of us, and we went back next door where the rest of the team was eating dinner, and we got all the black players on our team, and we took them over to the bar and sat down again without saying a word. We just wanted to show that farmer that we didn't think the way he thought, that we didn't belong to the same club of prejudice he did. Thank God for Colin's moral courage. He didn't want to let that farmer think we and the rest of the world agreed with him. When we walked back into that bar in Kansas, the farmer glowered at us with a look of disgust and hate I will never forget. But the funny thing is, we kept talking to him. And he stayed around. We all started talking basketball, talking John Wooden and UCLA and its record string of championships, the ABA vs. the NBA, the greatest players of all time. Surely the beer helped, but a little while later we were friends with that farmer. All of us. We shook hands with him when we stood up to leave. "You know," he said when we walked out the door, "You guys are all right."
Handout: Rights and Responsibilities When we exercise our rights, it often affects other people. This is why rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. At school, for example, you have the right to learn in a quiet and safe place, but you have the responsibility not to disrupt class or endanger your fellow students. Directions: Complete the matching part (#1-9) of the handout.
Titans celebrate virtue in citizenship. Responsibilities Our school community values and intentionally demonstrates consistent responsibility. Titans value responsibilities above our rights. Titans strive to be our best, do our best, and give our best to the world. Question Class Discussion: What does this look like in the classroom? Write down some examples on your handout. With Rights Come Responsibilities
Titans celebrate virtue in citizenship. Responsibilities Our school community values and intentionally demonstrates consistent responsibility. Titans value responsibilities above our rights. Titans strive to be our best, do our best, and give our best to the world. Question Class Discussion: What does this look like outside of the classroom (hallway/cafeteria/home/community)? Write down some examples on your handout. With Rights Come Responsibilities
Excerpt from Gazette Policy Respects Free not hate speech Vince Bzdek 20 August 2017 As a journalist, I'm a huge defender of The First Amendment, but I've also always thought of it as a starting point, a framework. It tells us the government can't restrict our speech, but what we do in our communities, businesses, in our media after that, that is up to us. Eleanor Roosevelt put it nicely. "Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect." I like how Uncle Ben used to put it to Spider-Man even better: "With great power comes great responsibility."
