2 By Ideology I shall mean ideas about how one should live, and what constitutes the good life. We shall explore the eight reversal theory values in relation to such ideas. In doing so we shall need to look at social as well as individual ideologies, including political ideology.

9 In looking at ideology, our interest here will be not so much in measuring the climate differences between different societies, as in understanding how the RT values become assimilated to, and expressed in, different social systems.

56 Political parties They represent ideologies, but in particular concrete historical circumstances. They need to appeal to all the basic values if they are to have a chance of succeeding. They need to be motivationally rich. But they may attach these values to different aspects of the society or nation that they hope to lead. Let us compare the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S. in this respect.
