Interview Narrator: Sister Anne Jude Van Lanen Interviewed By: Jennifer Roehl Location of Interview: Motherhouse in Fond du Lac, WI Date of interview: May 6th, :16 Interviewer- This is Jennifer Roehl interviewing Sister Anne Jude for SisterStory at the Motherhouse located in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on May 6th, Welcome Sister Anne Jude. 00:27 Sister Thank you. 00:28 Interviewer- Alright, are we ready? 00:30 Sister I am surely ready. 00:32 Interviewer- Um, we're going to go over some background information. What name do you go by? 00:36 Sister I go by Sister Anne Jude Van Lanen is my last name. 00:40 Interviewer- And what is your baptismal name? 00:42 Sister My baptismal name is Roseann Van Lanen 00:45 Interviewer- That's very pretty. What is your religious name? 00:47 Sister Sister Anne Jude 00:49 Interviewer- And when were you born? 00:53 Sister I was born December 23rd, :58 Interviewer- and where were you born? 00:59 Sister I was born in Wrightstown, Wisconsin. 01:02 Interviewer- Is that where you grew up? 01:04 Sister That's where I grew up, went to school and all the way through until I entered, uh...saint Agnes School of Nursing. 01:13 Interviewer- And were you raised in a Catholic family? 1

01:16 Sister I was. Uh...parents who were Catholic and instilled in me a deep faith. 01:24 Interviewer-Did you have any siblings that were clergy or sisters? 01:28 Sister I did not. I have eight siblings, there are six brothers and there are two sisters and none of them have entered religious life, but all have married and have families 01:40 Interviewer- That's nice. 01:42 Sister That's nice. 01:43 Interviewer- yeah. 01:44 Sister Very proud of them. 01:46 Interviewer- Please tell me who was in your family. Like, your parents and your siblings. You talked about, umm what was your place in the birth order of that family? 01:56 Sister We grew up on a farm and I was the ninth child. Ahh very much special kind of birth because the brother who preceded me in the family, died at age five from pneumonia and my parents have all these boys in a row and were really, they didn't want to end their productive years with the death of their youngest child and so they conceived of me. And therefore, I think I was spoiled. [Laughing...] 02:34 Interviewer- What is the name of the community you belong too? 02:36 Sister I belong to the Sisters of Saint Agnes, the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Agnes from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. 02:41 Interviewer- And how long have you been a sister? 02:43 Sister I have been a Sister for now, fifty-seven years 02:48 Interviewer- That's a long time. 02:49 Sister It's very long. I hope you can come and celebrate when I celebrate my sixtieth jubilee. 2

02:53 Interviewer- I hope to! 02:54 Sister That would be wonderful. 02:55 Interviewer- Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. When did you first consider a religious vocation for yourself? 03:00 Sister That was in February of I never really thought of religious life for me. I did think of becoming a nurse, a professional nurse. I also thought of working in foreign mission field whether that would have been in Peace Corps or some kind of service, but I did not perceive up until in an inspirational moment in my life in 1954 while I was on retreat as a student nurse. 03:37 Interviewer- and that's when you knew you'd become a sister? 03:40 Sister Even then I didn't think I was going to become a sister. I went to ask about dating and someone in whom I had some interest and he had interest in me. But, when I got to the door it was like a bolt of lightning it was like, well, why do I have to ask a priest about dating? I can tell him that I think this isn't for me. But with that, the door opened and he called me in and he would not let me off the hook and asked me why I thought I did not have a religious life vocation. I thought of every excuse in the world. He simply said, "You must not make that decision right now. I think you need a few days to think about it." I thought, "a few days? I need years to think about it." but indeed it took days. 04:31 Interviewer- He must have saw something in you. 04:33 Sister I don't know if he saw it or if it was simply he was an instrument of God at work in my life uh, because it wasn't a mistake then, it has never been a mistake for me. Uh, once I said my "yes" God took over in my life and it's been powerful. 3

04:53 Interviewer- What surprised you most about religious life? 04:57 Sister The most surprising thing for me was if I had any doubts or misconceptions about something, I could possibly do or wanted to do if I o-only said, "God, it's in your hands if, if it's from you, it will come to be." and it did, it did, my dreams of what I wanted to do were fulfilled. SILENCE I, I could give some examples of that if, if that's what you'd like me to do? 05:38 Interviewer- Sure, that would be great, that would be great. 05:41 Sister Um, you know I just always dreamed of going to the foreign missions as a lay person and then I come to the community and when I asked initially "Do you have sisters in the foreign missions," "Oh yes, we do" and I said, "Are they nurses?" And the SupeRíor General at the time said, "Yes" and I said, "How many?" and she said, "one." 06:06 Interviewer- That's not very many. Sister and I thought to myself, so I immediately said, "If you have only one, will I have a chance of getting there because that's my dream?" and she said "Honey," I can still hear that [giggle], "Honey, if it's of God it will come to pass, and I think we have to put that in God's hands. First you come and then God will work in you and through us to fulfill what should happen in your life." and it did and four short years after I became a sister that particular sister in the foreign missions died rather abruptly from cancer and I was assigned, I was the only sister nurse who had said I want to go and I was sent. 07:00 Interviewer- That's pretty amazing. 07:01 Sister That's very amazing. 4

07:05 Interviewer- Now we are going to talk a little bit about discernment, Did you look at any, at many communities before choosing one? 07:12 Sister I did not. Simply because I had been taught by the Franciscan sisters. Uh... from Manitowoc, Wisconsin. I came to the School of Nursing and got to know the Sisters of Saint Agnes. Sss, I had um a rel a first cousin that was a Holy Spirit Sister in Techny, Illinois and so I thought you know I could go to that community to go to the foreign missions, but when the SupeRíor General said and called upon me to have faith that God would get me to the foreign missions if that was God's design for me and it came to, you know, it came to pass but I had to trust, there's that step that in accepting religious life and what we become in religious life are how we serve in the rel...religious life has to be a commitment made in faith and that deep faith was instilled in me by my parents, by my family and I'm deeply grateful to them for that gift of faith. 08:21 Interviewer- So what drew you particularly to this congregation? 08:26 Sister Nursing. And I was already a nurse, I was pre..i was in my final year of nursing and preparing to graduate, take my state boards and they assured me that that was very acceptable, they felt they knew me through the School of Nursing so it wasn't like I had to go through a lot of interrogation or filling out forms. The sisters from the field of nursing and the School of Nursing, who were Sisters of Saint Agnes knew me so I came with their recommendation and I was allowed to not only finish my studies, but as a Novice to take my state boards, which was kind of unusual. But, they took me as I was and uh..i'm very grateful. 09:15 Interviewer- What is the mission of...of this congregation? 5

09:19 Sister The mission of the Sisters of Saint Agnes is to reach out to those whose faith life or dignity is threatened in any way. And so we've become involved over the years teaching is...has been a huge component of our community and quickly upon the heels of the field of education came nursing because our firs...our founders, Mother Agnes was approached early on and in 1895 you know, Saint Agnes Hospital is established and then because teaching was important, they set up the School of Nursing and the...following on the heels of that, you know was Marian college, now Marian University. So the field of education is very important to us. Both in elementary, high school, uh, university level and also in the field of nursing and other health related fields. 10:22 Interviewer- Now, you said you got your nursing degree while you were a Novice, at what age did you become a Novice? 10:28 Sister I became a Novice at the age of twenty-one. And then I got my diploma in nursing through Saint Agnes Hospital School of Nursing. As soon as I made my first vows, they asked me to get my degree in nursing at Marian, and I did. I went on there and received my degree in Nursing education in uh So I was, made my first vows in 1957 and got my degree in Nursing in 1958 and I've never regretted having that degree in nursing education because those education classes prepared me in my work in the foreign missions where I did a lot of educational things, and in my nursing that I did at Saint Agnes Hospital as well as in Hospice, we do a lot of education and I'll talk more about ministry if you get to that later. I don't know when you want to pursue that with me. 11:37 Interviewer- It s coming. [Laughs] What would you like to share about your process of discernment? 6

11:43 Sister My process of discernment was very brief about entering the congregation because it came as such a surprise to me that God would have in...called me to religious life. I didn't think I was Holy enough, I didn't think I cared to pray enough, I didn't think, I just didn't think that God would call me, a...ordinary, simple, farm girl to be a religious woman in this world, so that when I received the call, I...I almost doubted it for a while. But, then as I talked and I was encouraged to talk to Sister Mary Agreda who became my mentor early on, she was the director of the School of Nursing and she highly encouraged me and said, " young lady, you have all that you need to become a sister of Saint Agnes" and she then allowed me to go home and talk with my parents. And my parents were overwhelmingly supportive. My mother very tearfully said [giggle] she couldn't be more happy. My father was speechless in the beginning and then said to me, "Sis, I am so proud to think that you are called. There was a day I thought I had a call to the priesthood, but I found out when I met your mother that marriage was for me, but I always prayed that one of my children would become a religious." and he said, "And you're the last possible one to do that. So, I am very proud to say, I give you to God." And so, when I asked my siblings one after the other said, "Sis, go for it, we support you." 13:47 Interviewer- That's really good to have that family support. 13:48 Sister I have been so blessed. 13:52 Interviewer- Um, when did you take your final vows? 13:55 Sister I took my final vows in :00 Interviewer- And how have those vows shaped your experience as a sister? 7

14:05 Sister My final vows only flowed from my very first vows, actually, my first vows flowed from the day I said, "Yes" to God to entering religious life. From the day I said yes to God, I said yes to all that followed. So taking the vows really didn't change at all for me. I grew in understanding my vows better, but my commitment was made the day I entered the community. 14:42 Interviewer- And how would you describe religious life to a young woman in discernment? 14:48 Sister I would describe to her a call that she has to accept in faith and once she accepts that call, in faith, God will supply what she needs to commit for life. 15:13 Interviewer- And how does discernment influence your life in an ongoing way? You had mentioned once about a commitment to community. 15:22 Sister- Indeed! Because while we make three vows poverty, chastity, and obedience it s in the context of living community life and if we don t support each other as sisters in that commitment it will fail. It has to be done in the context of community and so um I have to say that while we take the vows, the commitment to community is of the essence of becoming a sister. 16:00 Interviewer- Tell me a little bit about your community and how it s organized and structured, like then versus now. How many of how many sisters do you live with? 16:13 Sister- Okay, I live presently with five sisters, I mean we re a group of five umm when I first entered there were bigger groups. Um and so that made it different, but I, I would like to talk a little bit about living out those vows and how that was different over the years for me. In the beginning it was a suggestion made to us we were called upon to fill a particular ministry position in the community or to live with a specific group of sisters. 8

Over the years we have had a commitment that is made with God to a ministry. So that when I went to Nicaragua and I lived those years there I learned so much about, I learned from the people. I learned about living in another culture. But then I returned to the states due to illness which was another experience in itself, I learned that God continues to call me to a commitment day by day and if it s illness, then I learn through illness what obedience is. Through that illness I learned what it would mean to serve in the ministry of Hospice. And it s like God continued to shape me for that and the community then allowed me to fulfill that ministry as I receive that call. So it s much bigger than just myself or anyone telling me what to do. It s God continuing to call me to ministry and to life in community and in service. 08:10 Interviewer- And we re gonna back track just a little bit and talk about umm the education that you received. As a child you talked about being taught by some of the sisters in your community, did you go to a Catholic school? 18:21 Sister- I went to a Catholic school and those sisters were from another religious community but they were wonderful women who taught me an appreciation of learning, of life, of service, of finding God in each day in all of creation and uh to this day I ve grown in my appreciation of that and people have taught me, the people that I have served have taught me so much about being a woman and a woman of service. I m so grateful for that. 19:02 Interviewer- And you also mentioned that at one point that you went to uh a public high school. 19:06 Sister- I did. (So that s good) I had I had my high school in the public school in Wrightstown and I received a very good basic education. It was very very small. I 9

graduated from grade school with twelve, from high school with twenty-seven, from the School of Nursing with fifty-five and so though small I had a good foundation which prepared me to learn and to continue to learn. 19:41 Interviewer- Okay, so now we get to talk about some of the ministries that you ve done. Could you take me through some of your mis ministries and positions? 19:49 Sister- As a nurse, I worked in general nursing at Saint Agnes Hospital for four short years and I was it was amazing. I did general duty nursing, I did night supervising, I did everything in those four years, again all in preparation for what I would be called to do in the foreign missions. When I was sent to Nicaragua I had some education with the Daughters of Charity in Dallas, Texas but that was early on that was, uh before the days of a lot of missionary preparatory courses that later years people received. So I learned a lot from the people in Nicaragua, um and when I went to serve in Waspam, Nicaragua I went there with just the basics of how to work in tropical medicine but I continued to learn. I studied every night. I had my medical books with me and I sat by candle light and studied night after night, language and tropical medicine. And um I m so grateful for what the people there taught me. The Indians taught me so much about how to be born and how to die. And uh they set the stage for me really, so when I returned to the United States I came with a conviction that we would one day have to have Hospice in this country that, that is 21:37 Interviewer- So Hospice is brewing in you already when you were back in Nicaragua? 21:42 Sister- It, they taught me how, so when I came back to the States my parents had died, a brother-in-law had died, a sister-in-law had died, and a niece had died and I was not able to be a part of that because of where I was. So, I came back with a conviction that people 10

in this country could die in a more dignified way. Surrounded by family as the Indians were and they did not have to die in highly technical uh world of technology but rather in a loving setting. They would be kept comfortable by good Hospice nursing. And so yes, we pioneered here in the Fond du Lac area and in Wisconsin and I was so happy to be a part of that together with Sister Mary Agreda and Peg Cerny who were my cofounders in founding of Hospice Hope 22:47 Interviewer- Would you say that s been some of the most gratifying work that you ve done? 22:51 Sister- Between my work in Nicaragua and my work in Hospice Hope, serving of the dying has been a gift to me and I cherish it to this day. 23:06 Interviewer- I know we talked about, a little bit a little bit about the most important contributions of your ministry, um you had mentioned were the people along the Río Coco. 23:18 Sister- I believe that the people there and their acceptance of me as a foreign healthcare worker and a sister in their midst taught me I hope how to accept others so that people should have a design of their own life and their own destiny and while I helped them do it, they taught me how to do it. And so I hope that that s what we have done in the lives of dying patients and their families here in the Fond du Lac and uh Green Lake area. People should know what they want for themselves and I continue to be a proponent of palliative care and Hospice care for patients and families today. 24:20 Interviewer- Please share an example of a ministerial experience that brought great joy. 24:27 Sister- I think the greatest joy for me and I will tell a story. This has to do with a man who died along the Río Coco. I had travelled the river for about six weeks and up and down 11

the river I carried with me medications and supplies, but I never had enough. I always ran out and I was on a return trip up the river along the Río Coco when night ff had came upon us. We never traveled the river at night, it was too dangerous. We stopped in this village and I set up my hammock and was bed bedded down for the night when I heard this voice at the door saying, Madriki, Madriki bal Sister, Sister come, and I got up and got my flashlight and I said, Dia plikisma? What do you want? And she said Bal, bal, Padriki prurisa. Will you please come, my father is dying. So I put on my boots and my helmet and grabbed my flashlight and followed her through the jungle to her little hut and all the way I m going I kept saying to myself, but I have nothing I can give him, I have nothing. I had no medicines, I had no supplies, but I went and I followed her and when I got to the hut there were people surrounding it and ahhh, her mother came down the steps of the hut that was bamboo hut up on stilts and I said, I m so sorry, I have nothing I can give you, would you like me to come in and pray with him? and she said, Ao, plees cum. So I followed her and crawled up and it was the middle of the night and they just had a little crude oil burning wick that was their only light, so I knelt on the floor where he was lying, I knelt at his side and I said, I m so sorry, I have nothing I can give you, but I will pray with you if you want and he said, Ao, plees cum. So I said a prayer in their native tongue and when I finished, I said once more, I am so sorry, I have nothing I can give you and he said, Madriki, Trabil apu, man balram. He said, don t worry. You came. You came. And I will never forget the expression on his face and I have never forgotten the lesson he taught me. And that is to always be present to another. It isn t the material things that we give it s the life that we share and the care and compassion that 12

we show. I have used his lesson for myself all of my life and I have continued to teach that lesson to others. And I am very grateful. 28:13 Interviewer- On the other side, have there been any disappointments that you would care to share? 28:22 Sister- Perhaps the biggest disappointments I ve had are the times when I ve felt I did not have enough to give to others and then it s, I remember what he taught me. That we bring our biggest gift when we come empty handed but I have also learned when I, through illness or being called back from a mission because for some reason that then I realized that God was in that design for me and He had other plans and they were always bigger than me. 29:13 Interviewer- Tell me about your community prayer life and spirituality. 29:18 Sister- My prayer life is very simple. It always has the Gospel of the day and the people that come into my life that day, that provide more than enough for me to pray about and it very often has very few words. It s simply God, show me what you want of me just for today. 29:50 Interviewer- What sort of theological education did you receive? 29:55 Sister- I had basic Thomistic Theology when I was as a Novice in college, Uh I had scriptural studies and religious life studies, spiritual life studies and while I was in Latin America I had uh...liberation theology and other spiritual life preparation and uh cultural preparation to live in another culture and to teach and work among other peoples in another culture. I ve had spiritual life preparation all along the way and I had the grace to have Biblical studies from our own Sister Dianne Bergant (CSA) who is a scriptural scholar and such a gift she has been to me. 13

30:57 Interviewer- Now we get to talk about the sisters in the Catholic Church and um we get to talk about Vatican II. So in your view, how did Vatican II change things for women in religious life in the United States? 30:12 Sister- I was fortunate enough to be in Latin America when Vatican II opened the doors for us. That together with Liberation theology was just a breath of fresh air for me and it helped me to realize the place of of women and the gift of the Spirit at work in my own heart, in the people that I served and where I ministered to to the other sisters with whom I lived, to the other missionaries and the dear Capuchin brothers with whom I served in Latin America, so I felt, uh gifted with a new life that yes, the Spirit is alive and that has lived on in me to this day and I trust the Spirit is at work today. I don t know what will become of religious life in the future, but I have no fear because whatever it is, I believe it will be of God and the Spirit at work. 32:30 Interviewer- When we talked about the Vatican II in some of our conversations, we talked about the excitement of Vatican II to get back to some of your roots. 32:40 Sister-Absolutely, because our early sisters lived among the people, they lived in people s homes, they were very much of the people in their churches, in their schools and that s what we were in Latin America, we lived with the people in their villages. It was wonderful. Here in the U.S. there were some monastic things that crept into religious life and Vatican II allowed us to look at our roots once again and open those doors and learn from the people of God what they expected of us as religious women, it s been gift. 33:24 Interviewer- How did, how did your congregation respond to the changes that Vatican II inaugurated? 14

33:29 Sister- We embraced with open arms the renewal in religious life. We were asked to renew, so we went back and we looked at what was possible. We read all of Mother Agnes letters and the early days of our community and we took a deep breath and said, Yes; this is what we need to do. And so there were some changes. There were habit changes, there were ways of that we prayed that were different, our community life changes were life giving and uh we were very happy. 34:04 Interviewer- What do you see as the role of women religious in the twenty-first century? 34:10 Sister- I believe that the Catholic Church needs to hear the voice of the women in the church. I believe they need to hear the voice, not just of religious women, the women who are members of religious communities, but of all women. Women who are married, women who are teachers, women who live their Catholic faith, have to be heard. That s how we ll know the future of our church. 34:45 Interviewer- And what are your hopes for the future; like women in leadership roles and and things like that? 34:53 Sister- I believe that Pope Frances is trying to open the doors, has opened doors and it will take a while, but we have to continue to be a voice and just because it might not be heard the first time, we have to say it over and over again. 35:15 Interviewer- Women are pretty good at that. 35:17 Sister- We will do that, we will do that [Laughing.] 35:22 Interviewer- What is, what is at the center of religious life that you hope will be passed along to the next generation of sisters? 35:31 Sister- I believe, I believe that at the center of our life is still that call from God. We have to believe that God will continue to call women in all forms of life and I believe that, that 15

vowed religious life has a place in the Church today that may not be in the numbers that we saw in the past, like in the sixties, fifties and sixties, but I believe it has a place and I hope that people will hear the call and ahh have the faith to commit to that communal life living the vows in community. 36:18 Interviewer- We had talked about some of the um things that we wanted to pass on to the next generation of sisters like nonviolence and peace among 36:29 Sister- I think that women, because we are women have a special way to hear a call to nonviolence, men do too, but I think we do hear it from um a maternal perspective of wanting something better for the children of God for the people of God and we can bring that strong maternal instinct. 37:00 Interviewer- Does your religious institution have a communal symbol to recognize your profession? 37:06 Sister- We have this pin that I am wearing and uh it s of an endless life that s lived on. It s a, it s triangular. To me it s that Triune God that we live out in an ongoing, unending commitment to life. 37:29 Interviewer- What is on the pin? 37:33 Sister- There s a cross in the middle so there s a quick commitment to suffering. Suffering is integral to living a committed life and I think it s lived out first by Jesus and we, I hope our followers of Jesus and I often ask myself in my commitment how would Jesus want me to live out this commitment today, how did Jesus live it out in his life, how was he present to people, how did He care and for me as a healthcare worker, how did He heal, how was He compassionate, how was He present to people suffering and how did He suffer unto death and am I willing to be that committed that if it calls me to death I m 16

willing to say yes, because I believe, I believe I m very hopeful person but I also believe that suffering is a part of the human state and if I can suffer with dignity and with a sense of hope, I hope that, that can be an example for others. 39:08 Interviewer- Do you think it is important for the community to have a visible symbol? 39:15 Sister- I think it s important that people know that we re religious women and though a particular veil or a garb that we had in our earlier years might be important to some people, I believe it s more important that people know that we re religious women and that we want to be one with them and if a garb or a symbol sets us apart or separates us from the needs of the world that that could be an obstacle of what we want to be. We have to be a religious woman, a committed religious woman, a vowed woman who cares enough to walk with the world and anything that separates us from the people of God, we have to set aside and not be Jesus didn t separate himself from the people. He walked with but He claimed who He was, so that s what I want to be. 40:36 Interviewer- So when we talk about um symbols and habits and different things they ve worn in the past umm people might want to know has your congregation worn a habit and describe what it was like and how it has changed over the years. And if you once wore a habit but no longer do, which many do not um what were the factors that influenced that decision? 41:01 Sister- Again, it was a communal decision, it was made following Vatican II to look again at how we are in this world and what were our roots and our early sisters wore the garb of the day, of the peasant woman and so over the years the monastic garb came in as as the Roman Rule and the influence of Rome in our lives and monastic life influenced how we lived out our religious life but when we looked at our roots, our early women did not do 17

that and so we wanted to return to that and for me personally, and as a community we decided together. However, we were sensitive to those sisters for whom that garb still had meaning so some sisters chose to continue to wear the garb and the veil and we honored that. Anyone for whom that had great meaning and it was difficult to remove, we allowed them to do it. For many of us and I among them chose, I was in Nicaragua where the long habit only got in the way, riding horses, getting in and out of boats, walking in knee deep mud and so I was more than happy to give up that long habit and get that veil off that only [laughs] was always wet from tropical rain and so I was released and happy to get out of that habit, but I always respected those for whom it had meaning and our congregation allows sisters to this day to wear the veil if they so wish, but I do not choose to do that. 42:59 Interviewer- So, we are getting close to the end. Is there anything else you would like to add and I do want to just ask one question; how do you want people to remember you? 43:13 Sister- I hope that people will remember me as a woman who cares and who wants to care as much as my God cared for me. If there s anything I want to convey and I hope my message conveys that I am very grateful for a God who has always loved me. And if I do not love in that same way then I am failing, so I hope that people know I love. And I hope that all of my words today only express how much my God has loved me. 44:09 Interviewer- Do you have any regrets about joining a convent? You were a little bit older than most girls 44:19 Sister- I was, I was. I was twenty-one and twenty-three, uh, you know with those first vows. I was twenty-uh sss seven when I made those final vows so I knew and I had thought of marriage and not being an earthly mother was difficult for me. I knew what I 18

was committing to but I have absolutely no regrets and my God has never failed me. I m extremely grateful. 45:02 Interviewer- Is there anything else you d like to add? We got a few minutes yet. 45:07 Sister- Only that for all the words I ve spoken in my life, I hope that my actions spoke more of the Gospel and of Jesus than any of my words and I hope I ve always been true to what God has asked of me.
