1 All about the Golden Rule By Alice Max, First Grade, Meadow Brook Elementary School Do you know what the Golden Rule means? It means to treat others the way you want to be treated. How you do that is to be kind to others because maybe they will be kind to you. Like one time I played with Preston on the playground. Preston is a boy with special needs. He had no one to play with and I wanted him to be included. That is called treating people how you want to be treated is very kind. Also I like to make cards for my family. I know it s nice because that s the way I want to be treated. That is what the Golden Rule means. I hope you like that rule. The End.

2 Golden Rule in My Life By Macy Kerr, 5 th Grade, Baldwin Elementary School The Golden Rule teaches us to treat others the way we want to be treated. It would be easy to treat others the way they treat us, but instead we must treat others with kindness in the hope that they will return the kindness. My school is the ESL school, so we have many students that have moved from another country. This year a girl who has come from Germany has joined my class, and I have tried to help her by playing with her at recess, sitting by her at lunch, and helping her with schoolwork. It is not always easy to follow the Golden Rule. One day, a girl who has been rude to me looked sad, so I asked her if everything was alright, and although it was very hard to do and a little scary, it actually turned out ok. As we face Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we must all remember to treat all people, no matter their appearance, culture, or abilities, the way we want to be treated. If we did, the world would be filled with love, peace, and kindness. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, The time is always right to do what is right.

3 The Golden Rule By Sydney Dowdell, 8 th Grader, Hart Middle School We have a new student, in my class today. I wonder if she will want to come play. My skin is brown and hers is quite fair. She has long gold locks, while I have short hair. I ask her to play, with a grin on my face. Not even thinking about our difference in race. She returned a look, a deep look indeed. As if girls like me were just not her speed. Come on, I said after a long while of stares. Who cares if my skin is brown while yours is fair? She shrugged her shoulders and whispered a reply, I should treat you equally? Well, I don t see why! I chuckled at this. I chuckled a great deal. I began, Because listen to how I feel. Roses are red, violets are blue. I am human, and you are too. Explain more. The girl inquired. Deep in her eyes I could tell she was inspired. Flowers come in many shapes and colors. But every flower needs water and sunlight. And after all, it s the same with us people. We need similar things that give us all our might. We come in different shapes, and colors, But on the inside we are human beings. So what if we are different from others?!

4 Together, we can do great things! Now I understand! And bounce go her curls! Equality is meant for all boys and girls! I must treat others as I want to be treated. This is the rule, don t make me repeat it! Yes! I proclaim. And a good rule at that. We should give it a name, so no one will forget! The Golden Rule! squeals the girl with gold curls. So if I ever, come to forget, My hair will help me recollect This very, very important tool. About equality for all: The Golden Rule!

5 The Golden Rule By Dipra Debnath, 9 th Grade, Rochester High School How does one define the Golden Rule? Treat one another as you would like to be treated, one might say. But what does that mean? another may ask. Allow me to explain, if I may, For quite amazing is the Golden Rule. Kindness is the Golden Rule. Give every person you meet a reason to be happy Hold open doors, give people a smile And help them up when they re feeling down Kindness is the Golden Rule. Respect is the Golden Rule. Consider the needs of those other than you Give them their space, respect their feelings As you would want them to do for you Respect is the Golden Rule. Inclusiveness is the Golden Rule. Do not discriminate others for any reason at all Invite the person that s always left out Even if your peers laugh till they fall Inclusiveness is the Golden Rule Selflessness is the Golden Rule. Think of others, and not just yourself Share what you have with them And listen to all that they have to say Selflessness is the Golden Rule Empathy is the Golden Rule. Put yourself in the shoes of others Look at the world through their eyes Laugh their laughter, cry their tears Empathy is the Golden Rule. So there you have it, the Golden Rule. I see it now, the second person replies. Isn t it magnificent? asks the first. Why, yes it is, says the second, I see the world in a different light So brilliant is the Golden Rule.
