5 Enneagram Wisdom Frameworks: rich potential for becoming whole. Lucy Tierney rsj There are three realities of life and living whether we are aware of them or not: Mystery none of us lives without experiencing mystery on many fronts. First patterns of life and living which inevitably, at some stage, strongly move us to adjust out-of-balance aspects. (note other duality descriptions: 1st Task, 2nd Task Richard Rohr; Inner Child John Bradshaw; Shadow Robert Johnson.) cycles of development All three realities have cycles of inner and outer development. Those who consciously engage with inner work, prayer, reflection, spiritual direction and such like become aware of invitations to move from earlier unconscious patterns to later-in-life balancing patterns even though this may not be the way of personally perceiving and expressing the experience. One interpretation of the Enneagram diagram by Gurdjieff is that it is a symbol of the universal laws of 1 the circle; 3 the triangle; and 7 the hexad. From a philosophical point of view, one engages with mystery in trying to comprehend how these three laws are universal as they apply to each of us in our life and living. Another aspect of universality and mystery is that these three laws are intrinsic to our inherent instincts of self-preservation and always seeking the more. Yet another aspect of mystery is how our ability to choose is challenged, called forth, fostered, developed, partnered. Even if we live on the surface of our capability to be and become aware, retrospective reflection will reveal that the patterns of needing to belong, engaging with life, birth, and death (at many levels and on many fronts), developing beyond our present stage at all levels have all been active realities. Continued p6 ANSD Newsletter Autumn
6 Enneagram Wisdom Frameworks (continued) Lucy Tierney rsj A first step in deepening our capacity for becoming whole is to consciously engage with knowing the two overall aspects of each of the nine groupings - variously named with such dual aspects as paired strategies, giftings/ woundings, have problems/at their best. Deepening awareness through knowing the dual aspects of one s grouping is, for most people, something like having a jig-saw to solve presented in a finished state. As Riso and Hudson write in The Wisdom of the Enneagram, When you do discover your type, you will know it. Things that you have always known unconsciously about yourself will suddenly become clear, and life patterns will emerge. p.13. A second step in deepening arises out of applying the wisdom underpinning the arrows framework. Inherent in this framework is a re-presenting of the Ignatian concepts of consolation and desolation. The arrows framework invites to taking notice of inner energies that call to growth and others that have a pull-down quality about them. The wisdom of this arrows framework is knowing what to do with what has been noticed. A third framework of Enneagram Wisdom is Gurdjieff s understanding of the Enneagram as a cycle of developmen that permeates all life and living. The diagram (p5) is my adaption of the wording of Gurdjieff s expression of this cycle as presented in Klausbernd Vollmar s book The Secret of Enneagrams: Mapping the personality. 7 The Australian Network for Spiritual Direction, an ecumenical endeavour, is committed to fostering spiritual direction and to the training of spiritual directors in the Christian Community. We believe spiritual direction to be a vital ministry in the continuing transformation of all people. It is one of many ministries by which people are set free to take their share in God's ongoing work. It is a ministry of guidance taking many forms, and is exercised by women and men, lay and ordained. The challenges and benefits of spiritual direction are both personal and corporate in nature. This historical ministry is an effective tool for helping people address the complex issues of our time. The Network is committed to: encouraging spiritual directors in their work offering opportunities for care and nurture through regular gatherings and communications supporting national, regional and local training programs We welcome to membership and involvement in the Australian Network for Spiritual Direction all who desire to support this work. This Statement was adopted by the original committee in Canberra in 1989 ANSD Newsletter Autumn
