3 From the President Dear Members, We will soon be embarking on another exciting year for Sydney U3A, and I look back on 2009 with gratitude to all the members who have helped to make it so successful. We have a wealth of talent and a willingness to contribute, in the office, as leaders, and in the regions which organize the astonishingly varied and stimulating courses which we produce each semester. I thank you all. I have recently had visitors from the UK who are volunteers in the National Trust and the Royal Society for the Preservation of Birds, and when explaining how we operate with no paid employees, they were amazed that it is all done by volunteers, and it runs so smoothly. They send us all their congratulations will again be a busy year. In May a U3A showcase will be held in the Barnet Rooms of the Customs House Library in Circular Quay. It is the intention to remind all our own members and to show the general public what we do. There will be displays of art, presentations of poetry and creative writing, music performances, a production of a playlet written by and performed by U3A members, a formal debate and perhaps a Tai Chi demonstration and much more. A student creative writing competition will also be advertised, so do encourage all your brilliant grandchildren to enter and win the wonderful prizes!! We welcome ideas and help, please contact Ronnie Hoffman if you can spare any time, to help make this day something to remember. It is so important that U3A not only moves with the times but is ahead with new ideas. We are establishing a study of our member profile to assess how our energies and effort should be channelled in the next five years. This semester 60 members from Bankstown U3A are joining us, they will be part of Inner West, and a new group from Rouse Hill has joined Greater Western, we will benefit from their experience, and the introduction of new ideas. We welcome both these groups to Sydney U3A. Our membership is fine, but we do need more members who are prepared to take on some of the responsibilities both in the regions and in the Central Office. New members in particular can bring new ideas and stimulate existing committee, please do volunteer your skills. To maintain our membership numbers we suggest you all aim to Bring a Friend to your next meeting. U3A is like an apple, you can t tell what it is going to taste like until you take the first bite. U3A tastes good! Finally I thank you all personally for making this year so good for me, I have made new friends and caught up with old ones, I have been welcomed in all the regions at social functions and the AGM s and am greatly impressed and appreciative of all I see in our wonderful organization. Thank you all, and my best wishes for a happy and successful, Sincerely Lesley Duffill U3A Showcase 2010 Long room, Customs House, Circular Quay SYDNEY Life Begins at??? Time to discover new interests Time to hone new skills Time to find new friends. This can be the best time. U3A Showcase 2010 offers a taste of U3A life. See our art display, listen to our recorder group, delight in our choir, hear the work of our poets and writers, admire the demonstration of Tai Chi and applaud the Great Debate. Saturday, 1 May, am to 3 pm. Members may be required to sign an acknowledgement disclaimer form before being accepted on one of these courses. PLEASE NOTE! U3A members can join courses in any region, and you will be warmly welcomed at any course you take However, some courses have a limit on numbers. This is usually governed by venue size, teaching requirements or equipment limits (e.g. computers). Throughout this publication, a double asterisk (**) indicates those courses which have limits on numbers, and the actual number of students who can be accommodated is indicated in brackets. Acceptance into any course is strictly on a first come, first served basis. Consequently, you are urged to act promptly. Once courses fill, waiting lists are kept which are reviewed at intervals. Keep in mind that there are several hundred courses running at any one time in Sydney U3A. If you miss out on one of your preferred choices there are bound to be others which you might find just as fulfilling. Best wishes for another satisfying semester of learning and discovery. Thanks To Our Volunteers John Yates Vice President - Education U3A depends for its very existence on its willing band of volunteer helpers indeed these are amongst our most precious assets. Some of our volunteers have a very visible profile, serving in some capacity on Regional or Central committees. However, there are many volunteers who work behind the scenes in a variety of capacities, making tea, collecting money, arranging the rooms for the meetings, and a range of other activities. The contribution of all our volunteers is recognised and truly appreciated by the membership at large, and this is a note to say thank you to all the people who help in any capacity to enable our organisation to meet its objectives of delivering a stimulating educational program in a warm social environment. Thank you to everybody John Yates(VP Ed) Sydney U3A Calendar & Course List - January - June
