Charlotte Moon Phases Balsamic Moon In astronomy, the Balsamic Moon is seen around 2-5 days after the Last Quarter Moon. This month s Balsamic Moon will occur on Thursday the 24th of November. The Balsamic Moon, or Waning Crescent, as it s sometimes referred to, can be identified as a thin, silver crescent in the sky where a small portion of the left side is illuminated by direct sunlight. This is the 7th of the 8 monthly lunar phases. This phase represents a reflective time where your focus should be on rest, rejuvenation, and preparation for the New Moon. There should be no more planning or action of any kind needed during this phase, your mind should be still and at peace. This can be a good time for endings and some say that it is easier to give up bad habits during a Balsamic Moon. During the Balsamic phase, our purpose is to surrender and release. Relationships The Balsamic phase is not usually a good time to start anything new. You might tend to withdraw and keep to yourself during this cycle, so starting a new relationship could prove to be exceptionally difficult. The Balsamic Moon is a time traditionally associated with ending things so if you need to finish a difficult relationship now is the best time to do so. This phase is a cleansing time so remember that a fresh start is just around the corner. Meditation Meditation, contemplation and chanting will be especially powerful during this phase. Become still and use the Balsamic phase of the moon to spend time alone, rest and be introspective. If you do not honour this time and use the downtime available to you then you may not feel fully refreshed when the new cycle begins and things can become out of balance. This is an ideal time to relax your mind and let your subconscious and your imagination flow. Your vision should be completely clear during this time to ensure you are ready to begin again with the arrival of the New Moon. Career When it comes to your career, this is not the time to make any changes or dwell on big decisions. Try to avoid mentally strenuous tasks in the workplace during the Balsamic Moon and use it instead to relax your mind. If you are of a certain age, you could be forgiven for thinking we have gone back in time when you look at some of the top album releases this autumn. Of course, we have to use the word Album as some people under that age may not necessarily know what an L.P is, nor may they understand queuing to buy the latest record at a Virgin Megastore or even Woolworths! Here s our pick of the pops: Robbie williams Melanie C Our cover star, puts out her new album titled Version of Me on the 21st October This is actually her seventh album and contains the single Anymore that was released in September. I wanted to make an album that I would listen to now, says Melanie. I m not a leftfield artist, I never will be. I write pop songs, but my aim this time was to approach every aspect of them differently, to be more creative with structure and sounds. Whatever felt right, I went with. returns with Heavy Entertainment Show - 4th November This album is heavy on collaborations with John Grant, Brandon Flowers (The Killers frontman), Rufus Wainwright and even Ed Sheeran. The lead single is called Breathe Heavy and there is an accompanying music video. The highly anticipated album available from 4th November is his 11th studio outing and has been three years in the making. It s also their first album to feature the band s new guitarist Phil X. Plus Hugh McDonald, the unofficial bassist since 1994 is now an official member. Well done Hugh! release Can t touch us now on 28th October An easier title to ask for at the record shop than their last album: Oui Oui, Si Si, Ja Ja, Da Da. Suggs and the gang are back with fresh material guaranteed to get you dancing like your dad in the living room... Image - Busted Records Image - UMC Metallica s Hardwired to Self-Destruct (18th November 2016) and Pretenders Alone (21st October 2016), both release their first studio albums since Maybe skipping the former as part of your mum s Christmas stocking, and go for the latest Cliff Richard album Fabulous Rock N Roll available 11th November instead. I ll leave you with more 2017 gossip as a juxtaposition of the music world. Rumour has it that Guns N Roses may be releasing a new album, and may even headline at Glastonbury. 5 Remember, Remember your November Calendar Sunday 13 Remembrance Sunday Remembrance Sunday always falls on the second Sunday of the month. For many of us this day will be synonymous with the poppy. The poppy was adopted as a symbol of remembrance following the writing of a now famous poem In Flanders Fields written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae who was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields in the spring of FREE SPIRIT Saturday 5 Bonfire Night Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot, We see no reason, Why gunpowder treason, Should ever be forgot! Bonfire Night is of course a British event where we celebrate the failed Gunpowder Plot against the King and Parliament in It was Guido (Guy) Fawkes that led the plot to blow up King James I and his government and so now we build dummies that represent Guy and burn them on bonfires on the 5 th November. Friday Armistice Day 11 Armistice Day is marked at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month each year. We pay our respects with a two minute silence, to remember those killed in the conflict of the First World War and to honour those that fought for our freedoms. Thursday 24 Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a holiday many of us will be familiar with, but won t actually celebrate, but there is a connection to England. In 1620 a ship called the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth England with 102 passengers. Those passengers, who later became known as Pilgrims, left England as they had been persecuted for their religious beliefs. They landed in what is now known as Provincetown on Cape Cod in New England. They were able to follow maps of an English Captain called John Smith who explored the coast several years earlier. The Pilgrims really battled with winter, and nearly half the people were lost. But in springtime friendly Indians arrived and showed them how to plant corn, and the following autumn they were able to successfully harvest the crop and survive the winter months. So now the event is a celebration of that help received and of harvest festival. Americans take the holiday very seriously (in some cases more than Christmas) and cross the states to get home to celebrate with loved ones. Monday 28 Cyber Monday Cyber Monday is similar in essence but the shopping is done online instead. Wednesday 30 St Andrew s Day Andrew and his brother (Simon Peter) were actually fishermen, but they then became disciples of Jesus. Andrew was baptised as the first disciple by John the Baptist. By order of the Roman governor Aegeas Andrew was crucified on the 30 th November 60AD. He was tied to an X-shaped cross, which is represented by the cross on the Scottish flag (the Saltire) since He is the patron saint of Greece, Russia, Italy s Amalfi coast and Barbados, but he didn t become the official saint of Scotland until around 100AD during the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath. Friday 25 Black Friday Many Americans would take the Friday after Thanksgiving as a holiday to give themselves a four day weekend. Retailers caught on to that and created a bonanza shopping day (a bit like our Boxing Day sales), of course we have now adopted this day in England Sunday 27 First Sunday of Advent Advent marks the four week season that leads up to Christmas and the coming of Christ. Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus - which means coming or arrival, as in the birth of Jesus. In churches it is usual to see clergy dressed in royal blue or purple and for the church to be dressed in wreaths of holly and ivy as opposed to flowers. The holly symbolises the crown of thorns worn by Jesus and the ivy means no beginning or end. FREE SPIRIT 9

Diabetes type 2 came to my attention on reading an article by Michael Mosley for the Daily Mail that serialised his book - The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet and his wife s (Clare Bailey) subsequent recipe book to accompany: The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet Recipe Book that was written in conjunction with dietitian Dr Sarah Schenker. For those of you who are not familiar with Dr Mosley he was the person that popularised the 5/2 diet. This new diet has been brought out to tackle Type 2 Diabetes; and is a mix of lower carb and Mediterranean concepts. To get the shocking part out of the way - the calorie intake for the 8 weeks is around 800 per day. Making this still fall within the low calorie/fasting diet type. Although at its root this diet is tackling Diabetes Type 2, it is for anyone that is concerned about their sugar intake, is overweight, is in the pre-diabetes stage, or has diabetes in the family etc. (although anyone embarking on such a plan should consult their GP first to determine suitability). Most people in England do a certain amount of nesting in the winter months, we often reduce our exercise, watch more TV, eat more comforting starchy foods and of course in the lead up to Christmas we may eat more chocolate, eat richer foods, and indulge in more alcohol than normal. So perhaps now is not the worst time to take stock, as you may be shocked by some of the statistics surrounding this disease: Five million people in England are at high risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. If current trends persist, one in three people will be obese by 2034 and one in ten will develop Type 2 Diabetes. It is currently estimated that the NHS spends about 10 billion on diabetes every year. This is 10 per cent of the NHS budget. People with diabetes have about twice the risk of developing a range of cardiovascular diseases (including heart disease and stroke), compared with people who do not have diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy occurs in 40 per cent of people with Type 1 Diabetes and in 20 per cent of people with Type 2 Diabetes. Retinopathy is the most common cause of preventable sight loss among people of working age in the UK. If diabetes is poorly managed, it can lead to nerve damage, poor circulation and reduced feeling in the feet and legs.
