2 Page 2 Our Lady of Grace Wednesday, August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady For Catholic Christians, the belief in the Assumption of Mary flows from our belief in and understanding of Mary's Immaculate Conception. We believe that if Mary was preserved from sin by the free gift of God, she would not be bound to experience the consequences of sin and death in the same way that we do. We believe that because of the obedience and fidelity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, she was assumed both body and soul into heavenly glory. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory. The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church. We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However, by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names (Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, and Assumption) from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity. Scripture does not give an account of Mary s Assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Genesis 3:15, Revelation 12 speak of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testament, her Assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman s victory. Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20 Paul speaks of Christ s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. In the light of the Assumption of Mary, it is easy to pray her Magnificat (Luke 1:46 55) with new meaning. In her glory she proclaims the greatness of the Lord and finds joy in God her savior. God has done marvels to her and she leads others to recognize God s holiness. She is the lowly handmaid who deeply reverenced her God and has been raised to the heights. From her position of strength she will help the lowly and the poor find justice on earth, and she will challenge the rich and powerful to distrust wealth and power as a source of happiness. The Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass Schedule: Vigil Mass on Tuesday, August 14, at 5:30 p.m. Two masses on Wednesday, August 15, at 8 & 10:30 a.m.
3 19th Sunday in Ordinary Times Page 3 had let out a cry of pain for his family and this holy priest volunteered to take his place. Feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe, August 14 th St. Maximilian Kolbe was arrested in Poland in February of 1941, and in May sent to the Auschwitz death camp. As prisoner #16670, he eventually laid down his life for another prisoner on August 14, 1941, at the young age of 47. What followed were weeks of horror, as the men suffered the pains of dehydration and starvation. But this holy man not only offered to be one of the suffering, he ministered to them as well. After three weeks there were only four prisoners left alive. It was on August 14 in 1941, the day before the Church celebrates the Assumption of St. Maximilian s beloved Mary, the Immaculate, that Fr. Kolbe and three fellow prisoners were killed with injections of carbolic acid. When a prisoner escaped late in July of that year, ten men from his barracks were picked to suffer death by starvation as both punishment and deterrent. Fr. Maximilian offered to take the place of one of the men; Franciszek Gajowniczek Franciszek Gajowniczek, a father of five children, was the prisoner whose place Father Kolbe took. He was a guest of Pope Paul VI at the Beatification of Fr. Kolbe at the Vatican on October 17, He was a guest of St. John Pail II when Fr. Kolbe was canonized October 10, He died March 13, 1995 at the age of 93.

Novena for the legal protection of Human Life From Friday, August 3, 2018, to Friday, September 28, the weekly Call to Prayer will be adapted as a nine week Novena for the legal Protection of Human Life. The upcoming Supreme Court vacancy provides us with yet another occasion requiring focused prayer. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops does not support or oppose the confirmation of any presidential nominee. However, given this historic moment, the U.S. Bishops are urging all people of good will to pray that a change in the U.S. Supreme Court may move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcome in life. In addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, participants are encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the intention of the Novena. Kadie Crosson receives $1,000 scholarship Dennis Kellner, chairman of OLG Scholarship Golf Tournament, presents a $1,000 Scholarship award letter to Kadie Crosson. Angie Heiring, DRE, hands Kadie a copy of the Bible from the Parish. While the Scholarship awards were made by OLG Scholarship Foundation in May 2018, the $1,000 Scholarship checks are awarded on or before August 15 th in time for College opening.
