1 SD Retreats Opening Prayer Song Prayer Reader: Gracious God You chose Mary to be the earthly mother of your Son. She was conceived without sin and lived daily to be in your Will. Her willingness to trust you and accept the awesome role as Jesus mother gives a clear example for us to follow as well. Grant us understanding, insight, and perseverance in saying yes to your Will for us. All: Amen. Reading 1 The Annunciation (from Luke 1:26-38) Reader: In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin whose name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. But Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I have no relations with a man? And the angel said to her in reply, The power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. Nothing will be impossible for God. Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. Reading 2 Mary s Prayer (Luke 1:46-49) Reader: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 2 SD Retreats Reading 3 Wedding at Cana (from John 2:1-11) Reader: On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servers, Do whatever he tells you. Jesus told them, Fill the jars with water. Then he told them, Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter. So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves good wine first, but you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. Quiet Reflection Reading 4 Mary at the Foot of the Cross (John 19:25-27) Reader: Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother.
