2 Beloved Child of God Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. Rite of Baptism, ELW pg. 231 Since mid-august there have been seven baptisms at Trinity and several more are scheduled in the next few months. In late August at Confirmation Orientation 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th grade parents were reminded of the promises they made on the day their child was baptized. Those promises are connected to what their children will learn in Confirmation. Then on September 9 th the Women of Trinity gave 3 rd grade parents a Bible and helped them fulfill one of those promises, to place in their child s hands the holy scriptures. The 9 th grade Confirmation class has begun their yearlong study of the promises they will make (which are very similar to the promises their parents made) when they affirm their faith next October. I have been reading faith connection papers by the 10 th grade class and meeting with them to talk about all they have learned as they prepare to affirm their faith later this month. Maybe that s why baptism has been on my mind. What a gift it is to be proclaimed a beloved child of God! What a gift it is to know who you are and whose you are. We are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and then the congregation exclaims, You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia! Then we receive a cross in oil on our foreheads and we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. A mark that never washes away. A promise that cannot be broken. We belong to God now. We are claimed and loved. This is a gift of God s grace, not earned, but freely given. The promises of baptism are bold. You belong. You are forgiven. You are claimed. You are family. You are a beloved child. You are loved. These promises speak of community and family and these promises call us to action. As you have been loved, go out and love. As you have been welcomed, go out and welcome. As you have heard the good news, go out and share the good news. Now that you know who you are (beloved child of God) and whose you are (God s), go out and tell other who they are and who they belong to. To put it another way, in the words of welcome that all the baptized receive, We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. Blessings, Pastor Susan Haukaas 2

3 Fall Bazaar Good food, smiles, conversation, and treasures await members and friends attending Trinity Women s annual fall bazaar from 11-1, Saturday, October 13. Barbecues, pie, and coffee or cider may be purchased for $7.00. Scandinavian goodies, candy, baked goods, plants and produce, and Grandma s Attic treasures will be available for purchase. Trinity women are asked to bring a pie and items for the sale tables by 10 a.m. or the day before. Proceeds will be used in Trinity for kitchen supplies and upkeep, confirmation flowers, holiday food basket donations, third grade Bibles, and board book Bibles to be given to newly baptized infants and toddlers. The Women s budget also benefits the community and beyond in gifts to Head Start, Red Willow Bible Camp, Safe Shelter, Salvation Army, Perry Center, Lost and Found Ministries, Lutheran World Relief, and Lutheran Disaster Relief. Making use of perhaps the last good weather for travel, Young at Heart will gather at the Medina Café to order off the menu at noon October 8. We will carpool from the church at 11:20, with each rider contributing $2 toward the gas. Anyone needing a ride to the church is asked to call the church by 10:00 a.m. All seniors are welcome to participate in these monthly gatherings. Trinity Lutheran Church Fall Bazaar Saturday, Oct 13 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. Proceeds go towards benevolent projects of the Women of Trinity. 3

THE Bond is published monthly by Trinity Lutheran Church th Ave. SE, Jamestown, ND Telephone (701) connect@trinityjamestown.com Web site: Kristina Weber ( ).. Senior Pastor Susan Haukaas ( ) Associate Pastor Sarah McDermid Director of Children s Ministries Robert Murphy...Director of Music Ministries Kirstie Dobson Director of Youth Ministries Meggen Henke Administrative Assistant Trinity Connection Close Up With her ever-present smile, silver hair, and bright blue eyes, Glenna Monek sat in her living room and talked about her life and her church, Trinity Lutheran. Originally from Drayton, ND, Glenna spent many years as an RN at the ND State Hospital in Jamestown. She married Donald Monek, a local farmer, at Trinity, which is now the Youth for Christ building on 4th Avenue SE. Glenna has been a member of Trinity for over 60 years. After Donald passed away in 1986 and Glenna moved to town from the family farm, she spent many hours volunteering for organizations in her community, and of course her church. One of Glenna s favorite Trinity memories is working in the church kitchen for all the different activities and occasions. She loved the energy of everyone working together, but she especially enjoyed getting to know her fellow Trinity members. For 18 years Glenna delivered the church bulletin to Trinity members who could no longer attend services on Sunday. She said, I met a lot of nice people that I didn t know before! Several years ago, Glenna met Ardell Quigley when they were both at church, assembling the BOND. A friendship ensued! Ardell has been delivering the Sunday bulletin for 12 years. The past 7 years, Glenna has been one of Ardell s stops every Friday morning. Both women very much look forward to these weekly visits, sharing news and catching up with each other. The visits may be brief, but have value. Glenna enjoys staying connected to Trinity, through these weekly visits and following along with the bulletin while listening to the Sunday service on the radio.
