1 From Pastor Joel Skindlov July 2018 Newsletter Volume 24 Issue 7 Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, As we near the beginning of July, I d like to note two events in the life of our congregation. The first is the weekly concerts, POP Summer Concerts, which bring a variety of musical styles to the beautiful backdrop of our North Indian Trail neighborhood! Music, for me, inspires, teaches, calms, and leads to fun and enjoyment, as words and music find places and spaces in our life that hearken to certain times in our life and express how we might be feeling in the present moment. Music is a gift from God and one of the ways we can enjoy and relax any time of year, but especially in the Summer! A special thank you to Janet Robel for all of her work with coordinating, advertising, and organizing the Concert Series! I invite you to join us as we kick off our POP Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 1, at 6 PM! The week of July 9 through the 13 we will work together with Lutherhaven Day Camp with the theme, Speak Life! The theme verses come from 1 John 3:16, 18 We know what love is because Jesus gave His life for us. That s why we must give our lives for each other. We show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it. This Day Camp week allows children and youth from Preschool through High School to learn, play, grow, lead, guide and be mentored in ways that make the stories of Jesus life, death, and resurrection experienced, through Worship, Bible encounters, games, food, and fellowship! A terrific week leaves a lasting impression on everyone involved and allows the youngest to oldest learn and grow in their relationship with God in Christ, themselves, and connections between each other! Speak Life takes a look at how the stories of God s love, light, and life we see and experience in the person and mission of Jesus Christ molds, shapes and influences our daily lives and activities. I ask you to pray for the campers, junior counselors, Lutherhaven staff, congregational coordinator, and church volunteers that will be involved in many and various ways! What might speaking life look like, not only for the children and youth involved in the week, but for you this Summer? For you this week? Is there a relationship God is inviting you to tend to, to nurture? How might you find time to renew and refresh your own life, as God works to renew and encourage your walk with the Lord? A special thank you to Jake Rapp for his leadership in coordinating this week of Day Camp! Also thank you, thank you to all the adult volunteers for your work in front of and behind the scenes! I pray you carve out time and attention to experience the life giving love and hope with in our living Christ Jesus! As you are sent as one of many lights of the Lord in your world! Proverbs 16:3 NIV We spent the June council meeting focused on mission and vision concerns for Prince of Peace. We spoke at length about church committee work, and how to improve the function of committees. What is the best way to encourage participation of members in our church life? We need your input. We will be setting up times to discuss your ideas of how to improve the functioning of our church. All ideas are welcome at any time. As we enjoy a warm summer breeze, please reflect on your dreams for Prince of Peace. May God hear your prayers and concerns. May he establish our plans. Peace be with you! 4 Paper copies of the monthly newsletter, are on the back table of the Sanctuary and in the church hallway across from the office. POP Summer Concerts and Car Show Help! We need volunteers to set-up and tear-down after the concerts, and especially to help direct traffic and sign in entrants for the car show. There s a sign-up sheet in the back of the church, or janet.robel@gmail.com if you are willing to help. Please also like and share our event on Facebook; and feel free take one of our beautiful concert posters to a local business. Help us get the word out! Bible Study will resume on Thursdays from 1-2pm in the Church Library and will continue until further notice. There is NO Bible Study fourth of July week. Be sure to contact the church office when names should be removed from the prayer request list via at officemanager@popspokane.org or call WELCA has two beautiful handmade quilts to raffle for the Bazaar this year. Sales will begin at the summer outdoor concerts. Rebecca Hendrickson made the machine embroidered quilt. Peggy Renford made the other. Ami Elliott kindly quilted both of them. The tickets will be separate. You can buy a $1.00 chance for one or both of the quilts. Baby Quilters will meet July 10. Since there are five Tuesdays in July, Charity Quilters will meet July 24, and July 31. We need many helping hands to meet our local and Lutheran World Relief goals. Hope you women and men are planning to make or donate a craft item to sell at the Fall Bazaar on Saturday, October 27. Remember when setting aside Granny's Attic donations we are looking for quality gift items. Leftovers from a garage sale will reflect poorly on the handmade items. 6 MARK YOUR CALANDAR! The Prince of Peace Fall Bazaar is on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27 An end-of-summer shindig on the shores of Lake CdA Aug. 25th. Have a bunch of fun, eat a bunch of food and send a bunch of kids to summer camp! Tickets: $75.00 per person, $ per couple, or $450 for a pack of 6 tickets. Includes a boat cruise, wine, beer and cider tasting, gourmet appetizers, a mouth-watering dutch oven dinner and dessert, and boot stompin entertainment. Choose from 30, 45, or 75 mile routes the 75 mile route passes Wil-low, Granite, Silver, Medical, Clear, Chapman, Kepple and Fish Lakes, for the full 8 Lakes ride experience. 7 Vacation Bible School July 9-13, 2018 Grades K-6: 9am-2:30pm Preschool Age: 9am-11:30am Our theme is SPEAK LIFE based on John 3:16 & 18, Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Lutherhaven counselors will join us for a week of fun games, great camp songs, youth Bible encounters, worship, crafts, and more. 8 Caritas Monthly Report Caritas Monthly Report May 2018 Caritas Outreach Ministries Served 935 individuals from 409 households: Children (0-18) 282 Adults (18-54) 435 Seniors (55 & over) 218 We distributed 17,701 lbs. of food through the Table of Plenty and Food Pantry. We helped 10 families with emergency utility assistance for a total of $ We connected families with $385 worth of hygiene and cleaning supplies. We gave out $90 in fuel vouchers for transportation assistance. We had 54 volunteers putting in 542 hours. The 2018 Summer Meal Kits for Kids program begins distribution Monday, June 18 th and will run through August 30 th. Each school age child who cannot access the public school summer meal sites, is given a weekly meal kit that includes 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 5 snacks; all shelf stable and kid friendly to prepare. These can be picked up every week with the household s regular gift of fresh produce and bread from our Table of Plenty. Past years: Participating Households Individual Children Kits Distributed Our clients have expressed how HUGE this program has been in their lives. Kids do so much growing and playing during the summer that they need the extra calories from nutritious meals for healthy bodies and minds. Donations of shelf stable, child-friendly foods are welcome all summer. Caritas spends $ per week to help supplement this program and your designated financial gifts are appreciated.
