If so, then our SUMMER OF SERVICE is for you! On Pentecost Sunday (June 4 th ) our Ministry Coordinating Team will roll out our Summer of Service Menu. What s that? you ask. It s no less than 50 specific opportunities you will have during the summer to taste some of the ways we share God s love in our church and community. You might choose to get involved in Vacation Bible School or attend a worship service at the prison or serve a meal at the Port Ministry in Freeport. Maybe you want to spend an afternoon helping to make eyeglasses at Crystal Crafters or spend a couple of hours one morning handing out food at the Food Basket. Or you might want to drive someone to church who needs a ride or take communion to folks at Carriage Inn. If you ve ever wanted to put hands and feet to your faith, this summer is the time to do it! And why are we doing it? Because serving others in the name of Christ is one of the very best ways of growing in our discipleship becoming the people God created us to be. And there s nothing better than doing it together! I m sure there will be something in our summer of service that will touch your heart. I can t wait to see what God is about to do through US! Their transportation requires a vehicle that can accommodate their walkers. Please let Deana Wheeler or the church office know if you are able to assist in transporting one or a couple of our senior members to and from Sunday School/ church. 3

5 Children s Ministry As our kids are getting anxious for summer and we as parents are ready for a break from the strain of homework, after-school activities and packing lunches; we can take comfort in knowing we are ALMOST there! With determination, we can make it. Determination is a response to the character of God. This month, we will look to God's word for examples and teachings of determination and how God has equipped us to finish what we start. Not just to finish, but finish while being infused with the Holy Spirit. Our memory verse this month comes from Galatians, Let us not become tired of doing good. At the right time, we will gather a crop if we don t give up. -Galatians 6:9 Week 1: Keep going even when it gets hard. Week 2: Keep going even when the job is bigger than you think. Week 3: God gives you what you need to keep going. Week 4: Keep going because God knows the end of the story. 5

We would like to invite you to our youth group on Sunday, May 28th anytime between 5pm and 6pm. We will be hosting a silent prayer walk with several stations throughout the church. It is a come-and-go event so you do not have to be there right at 5pm. The prayer walk could take 20 to 45 minutes depending on your reflection time at each station. Come and take advantage of this very special prayer time. 9 HISTORY OF MOTHER S DAY TEXAS ANNUAL CONFERE NCE MAY Location: The Woodlands UMC 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive The Woodlands, Texas Joy Ministry Fun Friday Summer Brings Us JOY May 19, :00pm - 8:30pm Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother s Day is the early Christian festival known as Mothering Sunday. Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their mother church the main church in the vicinity of their home for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. This story was reported by the United Methodist News Service. 10 Do you shop at Arlan's? Did you know that you can support the Society of St. Stephen simply by shopping at Arlan's? Just bring your receipts to the church office, or place in offering basket on Sunday mornings. We'll submit the receipts to Arlan's, who will then donate a percentage of the total purchase. Thank you for your support! The Society of St. Stephen is a group of people from First United Methodist, Chapelwood United Methodist, and Christ Lutheran churches who are committed to providing emergency or temporary assistance to local people in need. Here s an example, that occurred last week, which illustrates the type of assistance your donations help provide in the Brazosport community.. A young lady was picked up by a kind stranger as she was walking down the highway with her suitcase. She had come to the area to help out her cousin who recently had surgery but had been kicked her out of his house after only a few days. She had no money but needed to get to the bus station so she could go to Tyler where a job was waiting for her. After confirming that she did indeed have a job in Tyler, the Society of St. Stephen provided her a bus ticket to reach her destination. "Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Matthew 2:40 10

11 A message from. Honoring your mother on Mother's Day Celebrated this year on Sunday, May 14, Mother's Day is a time to recognize all mothers and the important role they play in our lives. This year, consider honoring your mother with a memorial or honorarium gift to the church endowment, or consider setting up a new permanent endowment fund in her name to support a cause close to her heart. This money will be used to send our FUMC kids to camp, as well as to supply much needed provisions for the kids at the Lord Jesus Christ Church orphanage in India! Thank you! Thank you!
