St. John Paul II noted that the family is the cradle of life and love (On the Lay Members of Christ s Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today s Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is brother or sister. The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus preaching, and they are not amused. They set out to seize him, for they said, He is out of his mind. To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It s a mess by any standards. The family s perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! RELIGIOUS FORMATION Registrations are being taken through June 13, through our website, or by phone at Any new families who have joined the parish need to register their children for classes. If your child was active in the program this year, you do not need to re-register. First Communion registration is required for Catholic School students entering Grade 2. Confirmation registration is required for Catholic school students who will be entering Grade 8. Please let us know if your child will not be returning to the program next year Go to our website, ( under the Religious Formation tab, click the drop down box which says Information/Registration and then click on Registration. Speaking of fall classes: Please consider teaching in our Parish Program - maybe God has called you. Our program has room for teachers in Grades: Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 3 and 4. We supply the resources and the support. contact:: Georgann: glardaro@ctkri.org or Brenda: btougas@ctkri.org Liturgy of the Word Coordinator Needed Each week that Religious Formation classes are scheduled, there is a special extra program for first and second graders, which is held during the 9:15 a.m. Mass. While the congregation is participating in the Liturgy of the Word (that is, the Old and New Testament readings, Gospel, and homily), we invite the first and second graders to leave the church and go to the hall where the readings of the Gospel are explained to them at a level they can better understand. They often listen to a story that is more relevant to their young lives and deepens the message of the Gospel. A coordinator is needed to set up the schedule of volunteers and prepare the packets for the year. This is a great leadership or senior project opportunity for high school students. Please contact the Religious Formation office for more details or glardaro@ctkri.org.

3 At Wednesday morning s General Audience at Saint Peter s Square (June 6), Pope Francis met with groups of pilgrims and faithful from Italy and all over the world. The Holy Father offered this challenging reflection on the sacrament of Confirmation: Let us consider the effects that the gift of the Holy Spirit allows to ripen in the confirmed, leading them to become, in turn, a gift for others. It is a gift, the Holy Spirit. Let us remember that when the bishop anoints us with the oil, he says, Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. That gift of the Holy Spirit enters into us and becomes fruitful, so that we can then give it to others. Always receive to give: never receive and keep things inside, as if the soul were a warehouse. No: always receive to give. God s graces are received to be given to others. This is the life of the Christian. It is typical of the Spirit, then, to decentralize ourselves from our I so as to open ourselves to the we of the community: to receive so as to give. We are not at the center: we are a tool of that gift for others... Some think that there are masters in the Church: the Pope, the bishops, the priests, and then there are the others. No: we are all the Church! And we all have the responsibility of sanctifying each other, of taking care of others. We are all the Church. Each person has his work in the Church, but we are all part of her. We must think of the Church as a living organism, composed of people we know and walk with, and not as an abstract and distant reality. The Church is us, we who walk, we are the Church, today in this square. Us: this is the Church. The Confirmation binds to the universal Church, dispersed all over the earth, but actively involving the confirmed in the life of the particular Church to which they belong, with at its head the bishop, who is the successor of the Apostles This ecclesial incorporation is well signified by the sign of peace that concludes the ritual of chrismation. Indeed, the bishop says to each of the newly confirmed: Peace be with you. Recalling Christ s greeting to the disciples on the evening of Passover, filled with the Holy Spirit, we have heard these words illuminate a gesture that demonstrates ecclesial communion with the bishop and with all the faithful. We, in Confirmation, receive the Holy Spirit and peace: that peace that we must give to others. But let us think: each person think of his own parish community, for example. There is the ceremony of Confirmation, and then we give peace: the bishop gives it to the confirmand, and then in the Mass, we exchange a sign of peace among ourselves. This means harmony, it means charity between us, it means peace. But then what happens? We go outside and start to speak badly of others, flaying them. The gossip starts. And gossip is war. This is not good! If we have received the sign of peace with the strength of the Holy Spirit, we must be men and women of peace, and not destroy, with the tongue, the peace that the Spirit has made. Poor Holy Spirit, the task He has with us, with this habit of gossiping! Think about it: gossip is not the work of the Holy Spirit, it is not the work of the unity of the Church. Gossip destroys what God makes. But please: stop gossiping! Confirmation is received only once, but the spiritual dynamism inspired by the holy anointing persists through time. We will never complete our fulfilment of the mandate of diffusing everywhere to good scent of a holy life, inspired by the fascinating simplicity of the Gospel. Nobody receives Confirmation only for himself, but rather to cooperate in the spiritual growth of others. Only in this way, by opening ourselves and coming out of ourselves to meet others, can we truly grow and not merely deceive ourselves we are doing so. What we receive as a gift from God must in fact be given a gift is to be given in order to be fruitful, and not buried because of selfish fears, as the parable of the talents teaches (cf. Matthew 25: 14-30). The seed too, when we have the seed in our hand, it is not to put it there, in the cupboard, to leave it there: it is to be sown. We must give the gift of the Holy Spirit to the community. I urge the confirmed to not cage the Holy Spirit, not to resist the Wind that blows so as to push them to walk in freedom, not to stifle the burning fire of charity that leads to consuming life for God and for others. May the Holy Spirit grant us all the apostolic courage to communicate the Gospel, with words and deeds, to all those we meet on our way. With words and deeds, but good words: those which edify. Not the words of gossip that destroy. Please, when you leave the church, think that the peace received is to be given to others: not to be destroyed with gossip. Do not forget this.

Please give to the Catholic Communication Campaign Collection. Thank you! INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Is the kingdom of your soul divided? We are often confronted with choices that appear to be good but in essence are not. We struggle with choosing good over evil and right from wrong. Conflicts often exist within, and we walk through life with a divided heart. We realize what is needed to live with God but find ourselves doing the exact opposite. As we gather with our brothers and sisters and seek God s gift of Christ in the Eucharist, may we not only be united with one another in faith but united with God within. All conflicts and divisions can cease, and we can act with a focused, strong, and determined heart. VETS CORNER The Veterans Committee is sending an this week to those veterans who completed our survey earlier this year and answered Yes to the question May we contact you about your service experience? We got a great response to this question with 56 of 61 veterans answering Yes. If you are one of those veterans, look for our because we would love to hear about your service experience. If you do not use and would like to share your experience, please contact Jack Kelly at Operation Chillout Summer is in full swing and continues until July 9. We need cases of water, new ball caps/ tee shirts/polo shirts/cotton socks/sunscreen and insect spray to help our homeless veterans and neighbors during the summer months. Donations can be left in the parish hall. BIBLE STUDY With our study of Mark's Gospel concluded, Fr. Jared will be introducing a new Bible study on Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans. The introductory sessions will be June 13 (Who was Paul?) at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. and June 20 (feature film: Paul, Apostle of Christ) at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. We will begin looking at the text when the classes resume in September.

5 AN EASY WAY TO GIVE Are you 70 ½ years young? How would you like to take care of your charitable giving and your Required Minimum Distribution with just one decision-and you do not write the check! Consider Charitable IRA Distributions - a Great Opportunity! Qualifying charitable distributions from traditional IRA or Roth IRA accounts are excluded from gross income. What is a qualifying charitable distribution? The charitable distribution must be: Quote of the Week I literally have not been on my [cell] phone for ten months. The difference it made was that I became more aware of the people around me and way more focused. It has been good for my mental health. It s a very strange experience but it really is good for you and it has absolutely made me happier. - Producer and reality television judge Simon Cowell, in an interview last week with the Daily Mail From a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA; Direct from the IRA trustee to the charitable organization with no intervening possession or ownership by the IRA owner and to an organization that would qualify as a charitable organization. Because the charitable IRA distribution isn t included in gross income, it will not be included in your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). Taxpayers who take the standard deduction can also benefit. Because the charitable IRA distribution completely avoids the donor s tax return, the donor can effectively get both the standard deduction and the charitable contribution deduction. By not being included in AGI, the charitable IRA distribution will not be included in the base amount, which would otherwise result in an increase in the amount of Social Security income subject to income tax. For an expanded explanation, (along with CTK s 501(c) (3) Tax ID Number) pick up a copy of the yellow explanation sheet at the doors of church, or visit the CTK website: Parish Life: Stewardship Council: Charitable IRA Distributions 50 TH ANNIVERSARY ORDINATION MASS FOR FATHER JOE CREEDON The parish will celebrate Father Creedon s 50 th anniversary of priestly ordination on Saturday, June 30 at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Fr. Joe will be both presider and preacher. After Mass there will be a reception in the parish hall. Please respect Fr. Joe s request that there be no gifts other than your presence STEPHEN MINISTRY MESSAGE Sometimes we have the feeling that there is something going on in life but can t put a finger on just what it is. Our habitual way of thinking is to consider such an idea as unknowable and shrug it off. Then somewhere along the line that uneasy feeling catches up with us. Having someone to talk to about that uneasiness can avert a bigger problem. A Stephen Minister is someone who will listen. Call Carol Hartley at ( CTK_StephenMinistry@verizon.net), Larry Bartley at ( LJBJR@cox.net) or call the office at for more information.
