Music of the Mass Missa Deus Genitor alme Plainsong Blessed are the pure in heart Henry Walford Davies ( ) Blessed are those that be undefiled Thomas Tallis ( ) Introit - Sung by the Choir Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see our God; The secret of the Lord is theirs, Their soul is Christ s abode. Still to the lowly soul He doth Himself impart, And for His Cradle and His throne Chooseth the pure in heart. Music: Henry Walford Davies ( ) Lyrics: John Keeble ( ) on Matthew 5.8 Entrance Hymn - Sung by Take up thy cross, the Saviour said Hymnal 76 THE ORDER OF MASS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is
none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee. Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir Κyrie Eleison Christe Eleison Kyrie Eleison Collect for the Sunday called Lent III Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy We bessech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Old Testament Lesson Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way. But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again. And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill
thee. And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay. Then the Lordopened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. : This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Numbers 22 vv Gradual Psalm Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider the trouble which I suffer of them that hate me: thou that liftest me up from_the gates_of dëath. That I may shew all thy praises within the ports of the daughter_of Sion : I will rejoice in thy_salvation. The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made : in the same net which they hid privily, is their foot taken. The Lord is known to execute judgement : the ungodly is trapped in the work of his own händs. The wicked shall be turned into hell : and all the people that forget Göd. For the poor shall not alway be forgotten : the patient abiding of the meek shall not perish for ever. Up, Lord, and let not man have the up_per hand : let the heathen be judged in thy sïght. Put them in fear, O Lörd : that the heathen may know themselves to be_but mën. Ps end
New Testament Lesson Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. This is the Word of the Lord. : Thanks be to God. Lent Prose Ephesians Hymnal 507
The Gospel The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke: Glory be to thee, O Lord. He was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.and it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Luke This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.
Sermon Food for the Journey The Rev d Canon John O Toole National Ecumenical Officer and Secretary to the Department for Dialogue and Unity, Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales Nicene Creed - Sung by

Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Sentence - Sung by the Choir The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb moreover by them is thy servant taught.
Offertory Hymn - Sung by
Prayer over the Gifts Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Celebrant prays a Collect. reply: Amen The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in Excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini: Hosanna in Excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen.
The Lord s Prayer - Sung by As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: Agnus Dei - Sung by the Choir Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace.
Prayer of Humble Access We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he is un. Amen. Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that taketh away the sins of the world: blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed. Communion Sentence - Sung by the Choir The sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest, where she may lay her young: even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God; blessed are they that dwell in thy house, they will be always praising thee. Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. If you would like to make enquiries about baptism or confirmation, or preparation to receive communion, please contact one of the clergy.
During the Distribution of Communion, the Choir sing a motet: Blessed are those that be undefiled in the way: and walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies: and seek him with their whole heart. For they who do no wickedness: walk in his ways. Thou hast charged us, O Lord: that we shall diligently keep thy commandments. O that our ways were made so direct: that we might keep thy statutes! So shall we not be confounded: while we have respect unto all thy commandments. Glory be to the Father, and to the son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: Psalm Music: Thomas Tallis ( ) Communion Hymn Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands Hymnal 306 The Celebrant prays the Post-Communion Prayer, to which all reply: Amen Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. Blessing and Dismissal The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ: Thanks be to God. Recessional Hymn When I survey the wondrous cross Hymnal 95
The Angelus The Angel of the Lord brought glad tidings to Mary: And she concieved by the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary And the word was made flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. The Priest then recites a Collect to which all respond: Amen.
