2 Words of Centering So Powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth ~ Baha u llah Music of Gathering Announcements Kwanzaa Welcome of Community and Connection (Don t forget to check in on Facebook and/or on Wifi password is ) Welcome to worship, God s beloved! YES, I Am Welcome! Bienvenidas y bienvenidos! *Call to Worship We gathered on Christmas Sunday to celebrate new birth. In the birth of Christ there is new hope, peace, love and joy for the world. We gather this Kwanzaa Sunday to celebrate new birth. The principles of Kwanzaa help us to live authentically embracing all of who we ve been, all of who we are and all we hope to become. We gather this day to praise a God of love; one who invites us, with all our diversity, into community. We are God s people. We bring diversity. We seek unity. In unity, let us worship God; for together we can find true harmony. We reach out to each other recognizing the sacred worth of all people and celebrating the gift of our unique identities. We rejoice that in Christ we are one. Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Kwanzaa: What is Kwanzaa? [Antoine Alexander] 2

3 Song of Praise: They ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love FS 2223 Scripture Reading Psalm 72:10-14 Tarshish and the Isles will offer gifts; Arabia and Sheba will bring tribute. All rulers will pay homage, and all the nations will serve your anointed. Your anointed will rescue the poor when they cry out, and the oppressed when there is no one to help them. Your chosen one will take pity on the lowly and the poor, and will save their lives. Your chosen one will rescue them all from violence and oppression, and will treat their blood as precious. May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word. Amen. Dance: Grasslands Chant (from the Lion King) [Ines Brookens and Chantal Hayes, dancers] Lighting of the Candles As we celebrate the festival of Kwanzaa, we light the seven candles and recall the seven principles. (Children can gather to witness. There will be a short pause after the lighting of each candle.) UMOJA We light the candle of Umoja to symbolize the unity of all people. May God be with us in unity and peace. KUJICHAGULIA UJIMA We light the candle of Kujichgulia to symbolize our right to determine our community s destiny and future. May God be with us in the struggle for self-determination. We light the candle of Ujima to show the need of our community to work together and to be responsible for one another. May God be with us in the struggle of collective work and communal responsibility. * Please rise, in body or in spirit. Bold type within liturgy indicates congregational response. 3

4 UJAMAA NIA We light the candle of Ujamaa to show the need for our community to improve its economic situation by cooperating with one another. May God be with us as we develop a community based on cooperative economic development. We light the candle of Nia to show our community s resolve; its purpose to make our people stronger. May God be with us as we go forward with one purpose, to continue the struggle to be truly free. KUUMBA IMANI We light the candle of Kuumba to symbolize the creative spirit of all our peoples. May God be the light of our lives. We light the candle of Imani to show our faith in God and our faith in ourselves. May God be with us and strengthen us so that we may continue the struggle of liberation. Let us rejoice in the richness of our cultures and traditions before our Creator! Let us all pull together! Harambee! Scripture Reading Isaiah 60:1-6 Arise, shine, for your light has come! the glory of YHWH is rising upon you! Though darkness still covers the earth and dense clouds enshroud the peoples, upon you YHWH now dawns, and God s glory will be seen among you! The nations will come to your light and the leaders to your bright dawn! Lift up your eyes, and look around: they re all gathering and coming to you your daughters and your sons journey from afar, escorted in safety; you ll see them and beam with joy, your heart will swell with pride. The riches of the sea will flow to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you camel caravans will cover your roads, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; everyone in Sheba will come, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of YHWH. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Amen. Hymn of Affirmation: We ve Come This Far by Faith 4

5 Talk Back 2017: How will you live into one or more of the Kwanzaa principles? [see insert] *Libation Statement (South) Leader: Our ancestors came here, lived,l loved struggled and built here. We share honor, dignity and thankfulness for them who gave so much. Here too will continue their struggle for liberation and a higher level of human life. May our eyes be the eagle, our strength be the elephant, and the boldness of our life be like the lion. May we remember and honor our ancestors and the legacy they left for us as long as the sun shines and the waters flow. All: For our people everywhere, for King Shaka and Queen Nzingka and all the others known and unknown who defended our ancestral land, history, and humanity. Leader: Let us remember those who have gone before us in the struggle for freedom. (West) Leader: On this same sod we will sow our seeds and build and move in unity and strength. Here, too, we will continue their struggle for liberation and a higher level of human life. All: For the Nguzo Saba, a new system of views and values which gives identity, purpose and direction to our lives, and for the children and the fuller and freer lives they will live because we continue the struggle. (North) Leader: May our eyes be like the eagle, our strength be like the elephant, and the boldness of our life be like the lion. All: God be with us in the struggle to build a new world and for the continuing struggle through which we will inevitably rescue and reconstruct our history and humanity in our own image and according to our own needs. (East) Leader: Our fathers and mothers came here, lived, loved, struggled and built here. At this place, their love and lives and labor rose like the sun and gave strength and meaning to the day. For them, who have so much, we give in return. All: For Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; for Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Sojourner Truth, and May McLeod Bethune, for Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, and W.E.B. DuBois and the others who dared to define, defend and develop our interests as a people. Leader: Let us remember all those dear to us, who are at rest. [Moment of silence.] 2017 Stewardship: Draw the Circle Wide 5
