1 The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas August 11, 2013 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ South Longwood, Chicago, IL , stbarnabasparish.org
2 The Associate Pastor s Mutterings THE SIMPLE LIFE OF POPE FRANCIS The simple life of Pope Francis has intrigued many. As a Cardinal he lived a simple life, and now as a Pope he is living in the same manner. As a Cardinal, he lived in a functional apartment where he would cook his own meals. His Holiness currently lives at the Vatican hotel, where he often says daily Mass with his Vatican employees, instead living in the very fancy papal apartment. The Pope prefers to wear very simple liturgical vestments and daily robes. Even the language the Pope uses is simple enough for one of our children at St Barnabas to understand. His Holiness has opted out of using university-level language, so he can be understood by all. Pope Francis is proclaiming, teaching, and talking about the same Catholic faith, we and all the other popes in the past have professed and believed in, His Holiness is just doing it in a way that we have not experienced in awhile. The Pope has been preaching without reading his homilies word for word, which gives off the effect that the Pope is having a simple conversation with the people in front of him, the world and, yes, even you and I. The Pope even carries his own briefcase. There have been media articles and even parts of articles dedicated to His Holiness caring his own briefcase and why he would be doing such a thing. Simply put: the media and the many people in the world have been intrigued by Pope Frances and the simple life he lives. Fr. John Hetland BOOK OF THE MONTH The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown Once there was a little bunny who wanted to run away. But no matter how or where he decided to go, his mother was always there-for she loved her little bunny very much. Reading this book to children ages 3 to 7 provides the perfect opportunity to talk about how much God loves us. For an older child, this book could connect the feeling of a parent s love to the emotion so beautifully expressed in Psalm 139, particularly verses 9-10 If I fly with the wings of dawn and alight beyond the sea, Even there your hand will guide me, your right hand holds me fast. 3 Faith Formation SPRED NEEDS YOU Interested in hearing more about St. Barnabas SPRED, a program of Special Religious Development for young adults with developmental challenges? Please join us for a reception, Wednesday evening, August 21st, in the Convent East meeting room, at 7 p.m. Contact Colleen Doherty at colleenjdoh@aol.com for further information. MARRIAGE MINISTRY Thanks to everyone who made the St. Barnabas Marriage Ministry date night at Pizzeria Deepo a HUGE SUCCESS!! The night included fabulous pizza, marriage trivia, a raffle, the ministry's version of the (not so) newlywed game, and plenty of great conversation. The group was an eclectic mix of parishioners whose marriages ranged from years! Though our years together varied from couple to couple, we all came to have fun while celebrating our marriages with fellow parishioners. Mission accomplished! If you have any suggestions for future date nights or events you would like the Marriage Ministry to host please Kristen Burt at burtkristen@yahoo.com Administration WE ARE We ve updated our at St. Barnabas Parish! 6 Education Can You Echo the Word of God? ST. BARNABAS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, NEEDS YOUR HELP... God Loves You!... God Loves You!... God Loves You! St. Barnabas Religious Education Office needs CATECHISTS for the coming R. E. year beginning in September. In particular, we have openings for catechists or teachers of the Faith in Grade 3 and 2 SPRED (Special REligious Development) Catechists. We also need substitute catechists who can teach when a catechist is sick or unable to be present. The word catechist is derived from a Greek word meaning to echo. Catechesis is a Ministry of the Word. A catechist is one who first and foremost listens to and studies the Word of God and takes it to heart. Once God s Word touches the heart, a person is filled with joy and he/she wants to sing out and share that love of God and echo it to others. As you read over and ponder this invitation, consider the following: How has God touched your heart? How do you share the joy/ love you have received? Do you love children and like working with them? Can you give 20 Sunday mornings to a group of children? Can you make the time to prepare and deliver a lesson each session, with guidance from your DRE? Could you be an occasional substitute catechist? What is stopping you from answering this call? Do you know someone who would make a good catechist? Could you recommend or invite them to consider this? Will you pray for us? By our Baptism, all Christians are called to spread the Good News of God s love. Being a catechist is one way you can help to build God s Kingdom on earth! Want to volunteer/learn more? Please contact Matt Furjanic, Director of Religious Education. Thank you! Phone: mfurjanic@stbarnabasparish.org Please remember in your prayers those that have passed away and their families: Mark Kennedy
