Graceland University Just. Jesus. January 21, p.m. COMMUNITY OF CHRIST TEMPLE SANCTUARY INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI

GRACELAND UNIVERSITY Just. Jesus. Community of Christ Temple Sanctuary January 21, 2018 Gathering Music Jack Ergo Organ Welcome and Call to Worship Matthew Frizzell Seminary Dean The fundamental principles of our religion is the testimony of the apostles and prophets concerning Jesus Christ, that he died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended up into heaven, and all other things are only appendages to these. From Joseph Smith, Jr., Elders Journal, Far West, Missouri 1838 Introit: Cry Out and Shout Graceland University Combined Choirs Composed by Knut Nystedt ( ) Scripture Reading: Psalm 103, The Voice adapted Christopher Ortiz Graceland Student *Opening Hymn: Jesus, Promise of an Angel CCS 32 *Invocation Tim Ross Seminary Student Responsive Reading Charmaine Chvala-Smith Seminary Chaplain Congregation: And Jesus asked, Who do you say that I am? Reader: They say you touched a leper, you made fear and inner demons flee, and you forgave outcasts. But my question is - why? And why them? Congregation: Who do you say that I am? Reader: Well, you have quite the following: fishermen, women, and misfits from every walk of life. What does that say about you, I wonder? Congregation: So, who do you say that I am? Reader: You might be a revolutionary, deluded, an ego-maniac, or just a political troublemaker. But for me you are a mystery, a troublesome mystery.

Congregation: What do you see? Reader: I see a man with uncommon compassion; a man whose treatment of the lowliest makes me uncomfortable, and shakes my conscience to its roots. Congregation: What disturbs you so? Reader: You reveal a world, just a fraction of a turn away from my usual sight, where everything and everyone looks different. That world relies on a slender thread of love to hold us to each other and to God. But strangely, it seems to be enough. Congregation: You have truly seen me. Choral Performance: Gaudete Graceland University Combined Choirs Arr. Michael Engelhardt (b. 1974) Sermon: Just. Jesus. Matthew Frizzell Seminary Dean Stassi Cramm First Presidency, Community of Christ Congregational Response: Lighting Candles, Living Words Congregation As the choirs sing, you are invited to come forward and light a candle in honor of a justice issue on your heart. You may also write the name of justice issues and justice workers that inspire our mission on the paper provided. Our words and candles symbolize the light of God s justice lifted up as a sign of Christ s Peace. Choral Presentation: Ubi Caritas Graceland University Combined Choirs Composed by Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) Offering Wade Wallace Development Office, Graceland University Your gift tonight will help Community of Christ Seminary Develop Disciples to Serve. It will help fund the Sandra Gleazer-Johnson Scholarship, which is awarded to degree-seeking students who do not have other tuition support. Prayer for Peace Brittany Mangelson Seminary Student *Reading Anthony Chvala-Smith Assistant Professor of Theology and Scripture [The cross] is laid on every Christian. The first Christ-suffering that everyone has to experience is the call which summons us away from our attachments to the world. It is the death of the old self in the encounter with Jesus Christ. Those who enter into discipleship enter into Jesus death. They turn their living into dying; such has been the case from the very beginning. The cross is not the terrible end of a pious, happy life. Instead, it stands at the beginning of community with Jesus

Christ. Whenever Christ calls us, his call leads us to death...because Jesus call brings death to the rich young man, who can only follow Jesus after his own will has died, because Jesus every command calls us to die with all our wishes and desires, and because we cannot want our own death, therefore Jesus Christ in his [preaching] has to be our death and our life. The call to follow Jesus, baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, is death and life. Adapted from Dietrich Bonhoeffer s Works, Volume 4: Discipleship (Minneapolis: Fortress, 2001), *Hymn: Bring Forth the Kingdom of God CCS 387 *Benediction Joshua Paszkiewicz Seminary Student Postlude Jack Ergo Organ * Stand as you are able Graceland Combined Choirs are Directed by Sara Blessing, Director of Choral/Vocal Activities and Instructor of Music, Graceland University Noah Wood & Brenden Chandler, soloists; William Bayse, Phillip Richard, Emily Briggs, Bobbie Moore, Melinda Leoce, Percussion Ensemble Jack Ergo, Organist

TRANSLATIONS Gaudete Michael Engelhardt (b. 1974) Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born Of the Virgin Mary: rejoice! It is now the time of grace, That we have desired; Let us devoutly return Songs of rejoicing. God has become man, And nature marvels; The World has been renewed By Christ who is King. Therefore let our song, Now resound in purification; Let it give praises to the Lord: Salvation to our King. Ubi Caritas Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) Where charity and love are, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us revere and love the living God. And from a sincere heart let us love one another. Amen.
