Lutheran hurch of the Resurrection Sunday, July 23, 2017 Seventh Sunday after entecost AS WE GATHER It is an age-old question: why is there evil in the world? In the parable of the wheat and the weeds Jesus suggests that both grow together until the harvest. With aul, we long for the day that all creation will be set free from bondage and suffering. Having both weeds and wheat within us, we humbly place our hope in the promises of God, and from the Lord s table we go forth to bear the fruit of justice and mercy (Silence please for prayer and meditation) RELUDE Morning Musical Meditations Various (lease stand as you are able) ONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Silence is kept for reflection. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus hrist our Lord. Amen Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with hrist. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus hrist, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that hrist may live in your hearts through faith. Amen. 1

SALUTATION A The Lord be with you. And also with you. RAYER OF THE DAY A Faithful God, most merciful judge, you care for your children with firmness and compassion. By your Spirit nurture us who live in your kingdom, that we may be rooted in the way of your Son, Jesus hrist, our Savior and Lord. Amen (lease be seated) SHARED MINISTRY REMINDERS FIRST READING Isaiah 44:6-8 A A A reading from Isaiah 6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. 7 Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. 8 Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one. Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. SEIAL MUSI 8:00 Go Light Your World Arr. hris Rice Summer hoir 11:00 Bound for Glory Make a Joyful Noise SEOND READING Romans 8:12-25 A A reading from Romans 12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you 5
have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with hrist if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. 18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20 for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. A Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. (lease stand as you are able) GOSEL VERSE THE GOSEL Matthew 13:24-30, The Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. 24 [Jesus] put before [the crowds] another parable: The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. 27 And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from? 28 He answered, An enemy has 6
done this. The slaves said to him, Then do you want us to go and gather them? 29 But he replied, No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. 30 Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, ollect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn. 36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field. 37 He answered, The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; 38 the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, 42 and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen! The Gospel of the Lord. raise to you, O hrist. (lease be seated) SERMON astor Ralph Supper 7

BATISM (8:00) God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus hrist. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of hrist, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. alled by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your child baptized into hrist? arents and Godparents: We do. As you bring Olivia to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God's faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord's rayer, the reed, and the Ten ommandments, place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God, proclaim hrist through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your child grow in the hristian faith and life? arents and Godparents: We do. eople of God, do you promise to support Olivia and pray for her in her new life in hrist? We do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus hrist, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus hrist, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Olivia harlotte Iwan, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Olivia with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Olivia, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of hrist forever. Amen. 9
WELOME Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Let us welcome this newly baptized child of God. We welcome you into the body of hrist and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. SHARING OF THE EAE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. 11 OFFERING RAYER Be known to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING It is our duty and delight that we should everywhere and always offer thanks and praise to you, O God, through Jesus hrist who by his death on the cross and glorious resurrection broke the bonds of sin and death and gave life to all creation. And so, with the church on earth, all creation and the host of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: ONGREGATONAL SONG Holy, Holy, Holy ELW
EUHARISTI RAYER Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. hrist has died. hrist is risen. hrist will come, come again. 12
Gather our prayers with those of the apostles, prophets, martyrs, and all the faithful who have gone before us, and unite them with the unceasing prayer of the One who lives in us and in whom we live, Jesus hrist. Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as our Abba as we pray: (Abba is an intimate word used by Jesus to address his Father as we might say, Daddy) LORD'S RAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen INVITATION TO OMMUNION ome, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Our Lord s body let us take together. 17 RAYER AFTER OMMUNION A Jesus hrist, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. SENDING OF RESURRETION LAY OMMUNION MINISTERS A Eternal God, whose glory is revealed in the crucified and risen Lord, bless those who go forth to share your word and sacrament with our sisters and brothers who are sick, homebound or imprisoned. In your love and care, nourish and strengthen those to whom we bring this communion in the body and blood of your Son, that we may all feast upon your abundant love made known in Jesus hrist our Lord. Amen. BLESSING May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen 17

God is Israel s redeemer, that is, the best brother or sister they ever had. Romans 8: For aul, true spirituality means that we experience the reality of the Spirit, which enables us to pray as God s children, keeps us in solidarity with creation, and gives us unseen hope that God will liberate us and creation from bondage to death and decay. Matthew 13:24-30, Jesus tells a parable about the co-existence of good and evil in this world. God s judgment will remove all evildoers and causes of sin, but not until the end of human history. 19
Readings for Next Sunday, July 30, 2017 Eighth Sunday after entecost As Solomon prays for wisdom, we seek to more deeply know the treasures of faith. In today s gospel Jesus offers everyday images that reveal to us the reign of God: a tree that becomes a sheltering home, yeast that penetrates and expands, a treasured pearl, a net that gains a great catch. Even as we seek the riches of God s reign, the great surprise is that God s grace finds us first! We invite you to read these texts as you prepare for next Sunday s worship. 1 Kings 3:5-12 Matthew 13:31-33, OMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Bartolomé de Las asas, missionary to the Indies, died 1566 Monday, July 17, 2017 A native of Spain, Las asas first came to the Western hemisphere while serving in the military. Granted a large estate with indigenous slaves, he freed them after he was ordained a priest. He worked in the aribbean and entral America to improve the lives of the native peoples. Mary Magdalene, Apostle Saturday, July 22, 2017 Sometimes called "the apostle to the apostles" because she told them of her encounter with the risen Lord, Mary was a woman of Galilee who followed Jesus throughout his ministry. She was present at Jesus' crucifixion and his burial. Birgitta of Sweden, renewer of the church, died 1373 Sunday, July 23, 2017 Birgitta married at age thirteen and had four daughters. Widowed at age thirty-eight, she gave all that she owned to the poor, and founded a community of monks and nuns led by a woman. Her work is continued today by the Society of St. Birgitta. James, Apostle Tuesday, July 25, 2017 James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee, fishermen by trade before their call from Jesus. He was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, and his death is the only one recorded in scripture (Acts 12:1-2). 20
