1 September 2013 FREE A community newsletter for the western Algarve HEALTH ACTIVITIES FOOD ENTERTAINMENT PEOPLE APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR LAGOS CHILDREN By a staff writer Lagos Children s Home looks after as many as 40 very vulnerable children who are under the care of social services. Although the children are under the care of the state the buildings they live in are not paid for by the Portuguese Government. It is down to the home to raise money which it does with the support of local charities and businesses. The building is very basic it s oblong with an open court yard in the middle and two floors, outside there is a recreational area. It s run by dedicated teachers, support workers, cleaning and grounds staff as well as a team of volunteers. The children s home, which was set up more than 80 years ago, was originally just for girls but so many children were in need it now takes boys as well. The youngest child at the home is just 7-years-old and the oldest is 21. The Tomorrow Newsletter team is launching a campaign to help raise thousands of euros for the Lagos Children s Home (Lar Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Centro De Assistencia Social Lucinda Anino Dos Santos or CASLAS) which is urgently in need of repairs. The manager of the home, Sofia Alexandra Cravo de Albuquerque, says they need 5,000 euros to repair the roof before the winter. Sofia said: The building really is in need of repair, parts of the roof have leaked in different areas of the house. It s leaked in the dining room and during the winter the tables and chairs have to be moved and cramped up to one side of the room to avoid the dripping rain water. Sofia says it s even more drastic in a few of the bedrooms. If you would like to make a donation to the children s home please give Tom a ring on or you can make a donation directly into the home s bank account. 4 Community An Amazon Adventure The idea of sailing down the Amazon River has always captivated me. It conjures up images of soaring jungle vegetation, screeching noises and river dwellers going about their lives. It s a place I d always wanted to explore. I was thrilled when I had an opportunity of doing just that earlier this year. I sailed from the Atlantic river mouth to the city of Manaus - a distance of 1500km. What By Lena Strang This month our intrepid features writer, Lena Strang, gives you the lowdown on the trip of a life time to get your travel taste buds tingling. a mighty river it is! It flows across Brazil, Colombia and Peru for a total of 7000 km. Every year it bursts its banks, creating a huge freshwater sea with numerous islands. One can well imagine why the early Portuguese explorers called it O Rio Mar The River Sea. There are lots of tributaries that flow into the Amazon. I watched the peculiar spectacle of The Meeting of the Waters, when the dark coloured Rio Negro meets the chocolate brown Amazon and they continue flowing alongside for kilometres without mixing. A day of surprises was complete by adding the incredible experience of spotting a boto, the pink river dolphin at close distance. I could see small settlements with wooden houses on stilts. Each evening I was treated to wonderful sunsets. Harbour stops along the way were fascinating. I loved Santarém, a busy little port thronging with riverboats and dugout canoes. It was great just strolling along the riverside and watching the hustle and bustle. My years of learning Portuguese frequently proved invaluable. Brazilians are friendly and like to engage in conversation. While having a cool drink on a floating café, I was able to speak to Maria and Manuel, a Brazilian Indian couple, who were pleased about bricks being loaded onto their boat for the building of a new church in the village. It was interesting to wander around the backstreets and visit veritable Aladdin s caves where you could see fishing, hunting and agricultural tools that must have been used for centuries. In the market I received very clear instructions on how to prepare the large river fish on display. If only I d had the means of cooking it. The ship stopped at Boca da Valeria, a small settlement of about 120 people. Their livelihood revolves around the river and the occasional cruise ship that visits. Handicrafts were offered for sale and plenty of photo opportunities for a dollar or two. I managed to escape to the neighbouring village, Valeria, courtesy of three children Tame sloth in Boca da Valeria I enjoyed sitting on deck and observing life on the river, from small wooden boats chugging along the shore to some larger craft carrying goods and passengers. Occasionally, Three river guides 4

5 Community Our final destination was the busy, commercial city of Manaus, home to nearly 2 million inhabitants. It felt special being greeted by an orchestra on the quayside! Boca da Valeria offering to be my guides and a young man with his motorized canoe. This was one of the highlights of the journey. We drove through mangroves to reach the other side of the river and arrived at the settlement perched high on a hillside. I could see a large football field with a water tower and wooden houses dotted around, along with several yellow stone buildings that proved to be a school complex. I met some of the teachers who explained that they cater for 250 students who study in morning and afternoon shifts. With internet access, they can also follow programs broadcast from Manaus. However, communication with nearby villages was through a tannoy system. I was asked to say a few words which was duly transmitted across the Amazon! I was charmed by 74 year old Nelson who has lived in the village all his life. He was born there and had built his own house fifty years ago. Another elderly resident, Senhora Ferreira, told me her grandmother was Portuguese. Most people are a mix of European, African, and Indian, she explained. Life goes on here. We have enough and there is always food to eat, she added. I imagine things in many remote settlements have changed little over the centuries with the river still providing the main sustenance. The city prospered during the 19th century rubber boom, still evidenced by beautiful colonial architecture and the amazing Opera House. Every part of the building Italian marble, French tiles and English cast iron - had been hauled along the river more than a century ago. Its existence in the middle of the jungle must have been totally incongruous! My adventure had come to an end in Manaus. Did my experiences fulfil expectations? Yes, they certainly did! I was overawed by the sheer expanse of the river and the seemingly limitless rainforest beyond. What had struck a chord with me most, was interacting with so many different people and appreciating how they are connected with the river that has shaped their everyday lives. Would I return? A definite YES. There is so much more to see. I happen to know there are a variety of boats navigating the rest of the river so, a ticket, please! 6 COMMUNITY All eyes on local election The local elections take place on September 29th. Expats can vote if they have a voting card. Here s a reminder of the candidates for the Mayor of Lagos: Paulo Rosário Dias - Independente Manuela Goes - Bloco de Esqerda (Left Bloc) Luis Reis - Coligação Democratica Unitária (Democratic Unity Coalition) Artur Rego - Coligação CDS-PP / MPT / PPM (a coalition) Nuno Serafim - PSD (Social Democratic Party) João Envangelista - Independente Joaquina Matos - PS (Socialist Party) (Source: autarquicas 2013.pt) Last month we introduced you to two of the candidates and this month we were hoping to introduce you to the rest but despite our best efforts we have been unable to contact the other contenders. If we manage to get interviews ahead of the election we will put them on our website. Nuno Serafim Nuno Filipe Serafim is the candidate for the PSD the Partido Social Democrático. He is married with one son and lives in Lagos. Nuno is standing for the PSD because he believes in the principles of liberty, social justice, private initiative and economic prosperity. He believes Lagos must rebalance its municipal debt and strive for financial autonomy. He plans to achieve these aims with a strong sense of service and says he will promote ideas and projects that aim at transforming Lagos into a pleasant place where everyone can enjoy wellbeing and a good quality of life. These ideas and projects can be summarised as: the revival of the historic centre; reorganizing functioning procedures; outsourcing municipal services to the private sector; reducing bureaucracy; maintaining and improving the ambient and hygiene of the 6 municipal public spaces. He believes these things would create the conditions that would attract investment and create jobs in Lagos. Nuno said he would communicate with relevant expat organisations and believes it is essential to have the active participation of all of the foreign community as a key factor for social and economic development. He said the foreign community would benefit from the plans he has outlined because they would simplify red tape and reduce costs for new businesses. Nuno said that he and the PSD party have a concept of municipal council management which revolves around serving the citizens. He said this would mean sticking to deadlines and seeking resident s opinions through information technology. Artur Rego Artur Rego is the candidate for the CDS, the Centro Democrático Social. He was born in the ex-portuguese colony, Angola in West Africa. He studied law in Lisbon and has has had a practice in Luz since In 2009 he won the Faro seat in Parliament for the CDS. Despite the challenging economic times, Artur Rego believes that Lagos needs to reform its urban planning. He believes in the maintenance and recovery of the historic centre which he says would enrich Lagos. Instead of developing ghettos in the outskirts of the city, he would promote the recovery of existing abandoned buildings and would like to see the recuperation of the centre by improving the public spaces and gardens. He said this would be a priority because it would enhance the quality of life for Lagos s residents. Artur said that he had been closely involved with the expat community for over 20 years through his law practice and therefore understood the community s needs and its importance to Lagos. He said he understood that expats had a high sense of civic and social participation particularly when it came to fundraising for charities. He said he didn t think this was always properly acknowledged but vowed that would change if he was elected. He said he would like to see taxes lowered and a simplification of bureaucracy to facilitate and stimulate the creation of new businesses. He said he would ensure that the seven councillors who were elected would have a say in the management of the council so it wouldn t just be the major party that made decisions.

8 COMMUNITY Helping Families By Tom Wilson It was just over a year ago that Linda Royle, an Algarve resident living in Albufeira, spotted a post on her Facebook page she felt compelled to reply to. The post was a call for help, help to provide clothes to a little boy whose family found themselves - as many families have in the current crisis - struggling financially. Linda at the time did not have any clothes suitable for the child but replied to the post anyway offering some items she felt might help the mother and the family. The offer was gladly received and through this simple act of charity an idea was formed that Linda along with several friends have since realised. They started a Facebook page called The Network for Algarve Families in Need. This page is dedicated to the collection, storage and subsequent distribution of donated items ranging from food to bed clothes, furniture to clothing and even Christmas presents when the time arises. The site currently boasts over 300 members and is growing daily. Over the past year 8 many families have been helped by the hard work and kindness of those concerned. We recently donated a cooker and a dining table to a family in need and we work closely with other organisations like the Faro orphanage and the local soup kitchen, Linda tells me happily. Nothing goes to waste she says, Anything we cannot place directly is donated to local charity shops or recycled through the green bin system. In addition to clothes, furniture and bedding the group also attempts to provide basic toiletries to every family they attend. Sometimes it is the smallest things that make the biggest difference in times of great need. So, if you are interested in helping or you know someone in need contact Linda at: Now more than ever networks of this type make such a difference; an opportunity to help the community at a grass roots level. An idea worthy of our attention. Walk for Alzheimer s If you want to sign up for the Memory Walk which is raising money for Alzheimer Portugal there s still time. The event takes place on September 22nd at the Church Square, Raposeira, Vila do Bispo. The group will walk to Praia do Barranco then back to the Church Square. It is around a 2 hour scenic walk. Please meet at 9am. Please contact Marisse Mitchell if you would like to take part. Each participant shall pay 2.00 which goes in full to the organisation along with donations received. The aim is to raise awareness and funds for the organisation that supports sufferers and carers as well as funding research into causes and possible prevention or cure of this disease. You can contact Marisse by marissemitchell@gmail.com or by calling or texting Excess drinking under the spot light new campaign to tackle excessive A drinking amongst young holidaymakers has been launched by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Portugal. Expats are being asked to share the message with visiting friends and family to help ensure they spend their time enjoying their holidays, not in hospital, jail or worse. The campaign, On holiday, don t let drink do your talking, has been launched following a string of cases this summer where consular staff have been called to the aid of British nationals who found themselves in trouble after drinking to excess. British Consul for Portugal, Simona Demuro, said: The effect of being hospitalised or arrested overseas goes far beyond a ruined holiday and can have a devastating impact on family and friends. So, our message is have fun in the sun, but drink responsibly so you don t put yourself at risk of harm. Streetwise Last month we wrote a feature about some local buskers and asked for readers to recommend their favourite street musicians. One reader has sent us this story about Paulo Almeida. From an early age Paulo Almeida - Streetwise - only wanted to make music. His father did everything imaginable to dissuade him which resulted in him leaving home at a tender age to pursue his ambition. Since leaving home in the north of Portugal, Paulo has travelled, with guitar in hand, playing and busking wherever he could find work, something to eat and somewhere to sleep. Before settling in Lagos, he has visited the UK, France and various other European cities. Paulo still retains the wanderlust but now with a partner, Josefina, a young daughter Joana and a new born baby son, Jacinto, who entered the world on August 6th, he has been forced to settle and is very content with his lot. Although he can be seen and heard on the streets of Lagos, sometimes with his pal, Fredrico Farinho, he was discovered by radio DJ Sir Owen Gee earlier in the year and is now playing live on Kiss FM and appearing in live shows. Owen Gee says that Paulo is a talented young man who even composes his own music although he personally favours the music of his mentor, Charlie Winston. Paulo could not believe his eyes when he received a personal message from Charlie just prior to going on stage back in May. Paulo sings in four languages and is popular with young and old alike, a true all round entertainer. Paulo has now recorded his first CD which helps to boost his much needed income and through Gee Spot Studios & Promotions will be found performing throughout the winter months at various locations in the Western Algarve. Any enquiries welcome to or siroweng@gmail.com.

10 COMMUNITY Beasts of Burden By Ikee Chatagnon Bowls Tribute Event day of fundraising is being organised A to pay for a Macmillan nurse for a month as a tribute to a popular member of the Lagos Bowls Club who died of cancer. Ron Lewis was back in the UK when he was diagnosed and died within three months. chicken salad, with homemade coleslaw and roast potatoes for those that prefer and there will be vegetarian options available. There will be a grand prize draw and for some of the best donations - an auction. Now members of the bowls club are organising a charity event in his memory. Organisers, Lynne and George Humphreys, say that Ron was one of their most popular members. So far we have received donations from Michel Roux, James Martin, Wembley Stadium, Silverstone, Dover Street Jazz Bar, London dinner cruises, Santo Antonio Golf resort (formerly Parque da Floresta), local restaurants and many others. This month we asked artist Ikee Chatagnon to explain her fascination for donkeys. Ikee has lived in the Algarve since 1996 and has held several exhibitions over the years. Living in the wild west of the Algarve with its breathtaking landscape is like living in a painting to me. There is nothing more inspiring than going for a walk early in the morning and watching the rising sun change the landscape, colour and texture minute by minute. To a careful observer, this rather rough and dry area unfolds a delicate and humble beauty which one only discovers if one has the chance to observe it throughout the change of seasons. Amidst this fabulous landscape one finds one of the Algarve s most ancient inhabitants - the donkey. The donkey has all the required qualities to survive the rough climate of the south west Costa Vincentina and that is why he represents to me the Portuguese spirit of survival when times get rough. The donkey s capacity to adapt, his stubbornness and calmness, his humble robustness make him resistant against stormy weather, and when the sophisticated horse stands in its stable, the donkey can take the challenge out there. The nicest thing about the donkey is that he is not aware, he just IS. His timeless and natural beauty is humble and quiet - no king rides on a donkey proudly to war. Therefore let s be inspired, let s be humble, stubborn and happy! The event will take place on September 27th at 10.30am. There will be an all day bowling competition and coffee and cakes on offer throughout the day - cake donations are also welcome. Lunch is being donated by The Spice Cottage in Burgau and the organisers will also provide More Music Please Algarve residents are calling for more big name bands to play at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, Portimão following the success of the AIA Summer Party Concert last month where British band Keane were the main attraction. Thousands of people enjoyed the event. It s the first time a big name band has played there. The summer party was a joint collatoration between Autódromo Internacional do Algarve and Continente. Tickets were reasonably priced at 25 each and if you bought them through Continente, you were able to get a discount onto your shopper s card for goods purchased in the supermarket. Locals believe attracting big names to the Algarve would be a popular decision for locals and tourists alike. Most big names like Coldplay or Rhianna tend to play in Lisbon or Porto but now residents Cancer Group The next meeting of the Cancer Self-Help Group will be at the Galley Restaurant in Luz at 11am on September 18th. There will also be free bowls lessons at lunch time and after the competition for any one who would like to have a try. Everyone is welcome and organisers say they hope people will drop in for a coffee or lunch. Please contact Lynne for more information on are urging more bands to come to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Resident Phil Harding said, The Keane concert proved that there is a big music demand in the Algarve. It was great to be able to go and see a good band locally and it was really well organised. The Autodromo has the infrastructure and capacity to host music events regularly and attract even more people than were there for the AIA Summer party. If you would like to comment on this story or any other please tomorroweditorial@gmail.com by it at all in the past, either as a sufferer or a carer to come along. They say it is also open to anyone who has a member of their family or a friend who has been through cancer and its treatments. It s a chance to meet like-minded people for a chat and a coffee. To contact Ikee please ikee.prod@gmail.com 10 Organisers say they would to like to encourage anyone who has had cancer or been affected Please contact Jackie for more information on:

12 COMMUNITY Shark Infested Water? Local resident, Brett Ashmore, caught a two metre Blue Shark weighting 40kg at the end of July. He said, It was quite a surprise as we were only one mile south from Porto do Mos Beach. We caught four on the day without really trying, the smallest being around one metre in length. Mr Ashmore said he didn t want to scare anyone, adding that the sharks were really quite small. He said although they could give a nasty bite he thought they would be very timid and preferred easy fish meals. One theory is that the warm waters and probably the lack of fish due to overfishing could be bringing them closer to shore. The Blue Shark, pictured here with Brett, was released back into the water. Western Algarve Choir We have enjoyed a fantastic run of outdoor Summer Singalong sessions over the past few weeks, and received a warm reception from onlookers. Thank you to everyone who attended. Rehearsals begin again this month, and our autumn/winter calendar is already filling up. For anyone wishing to sing with the choir, this is an excellent time of year to join as we will be starting a new programme of songs from this month onwards. This is an all-inclusive choir (with no auditions, or previous experience necessary) where the emphasis is on fun. The choir meets on Tuesdays from For further information on joining and rehearsals, contact Elizabeth Roberts: elizabeth_roberts15@hotmail.com 12 Campaigners petition against Algarve oil Almost 1,000 people have signed a new petition saying no to oil and gas exploration in the Algarve. The petition has been set up by the ASMAA The Algarve Surf and Marine Activities Association. Campaigners say they are concerned that the oil companies Repsol and Partex intend to start deep-sea oil/gas-drilling in Algarve, early in They say the first exploration will take place in the Algarve only eight kilometres from the coast. Protesters say they are worried no EIA s (Environmental Impact Studies) have been conducted and that there haven t been any open disclosures by the authorities or the companies involved, nor any public consultation. If you would like to find out more about the petition or to sign up please go to and search for say-no-to-oil-rigs-in-the-algarve Massive drug haul in police raid More than 10 million in cocaine was seized in a major police operation and five foreigners arrested, according to Safe Communities Algarve (SCA). The operation codenamed Lightning took place last month at Ferragudo, Portimão. A yacht containing 287 kg of cocaine, worth in excess of 10 million and two vehicles were seized. According to reports the drugs were hidden in a compartment behind a water tank and covered by a flag. It is understood that the drugs had come from South America and were destined for Spain and the European market. In its newsletter SCA said: The plan involved members of the gang travelling from Spain to Portimão where the drugs would be off loaded from the vessel and transferred School appeal Local charity, ACCA (Helping Children in Need in the Algarve) is appealing for help to get stationery for children to take back to school. The government can only afford to buy the very basic equipment like books but doesn t supply anything else. ACCA has been asked by the Salvation Army as well as local orphanages and other institutions to help provide the extras. to the two vehicles where they would be transported by road to Spain. Acting on information provided by the Police, the operation took place just off the coast at Ferragudo, resulting in the arrests. At the time, one of those arrested was on board the yacht and the other four on land. Those who were arrested, aged between 38 and 55 years, included an American, two Spanish and two Colombians citizens. Police say they don t believe that any Portuguese nationals were involved. David Thomas from Safe Communities Algarve said: This is an excellent example of international police cooperation, and a very successful operation against international drug trafficking. The charity is looking for pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, rubbers, scissors, folders, plain paper, paper clips, water paints and brushes, glue, felt tips, pencil cases, closed pencil sharpeners, calculators, recorders and school bags. If you would like to help, ACCA is happy to collect. The children start school around the 15th of September, so please, ensure we have your donations in plenty of time. Please call:

15 WHAT S ON Your PULL-OUT guide to events this month in the western Algarve Come and celebrate 20 years of jazz By Luc St John Webb The summer of 1993 saw the very first jazz lunch in the gardens of the picturesque restaurant located opposite the village church in Praia da Luz, the Fortaleza. It was a very much more modest affair back in those days. Chris Atcherly would sit on a stool on the esplanada and entertain a dozen or so guests strumming away on his guitar. He didn t even use an amplifier back then. When numbers grew he was soon to be joined by Graham Roberts who would turn up with his old piano. At that time there were so few guests that they would ask the chef at the BBQ directly what they wanted. residents and tourists it has become a must do on a Sunday. The duo has grown bigger and play under a marquee on the lawn of the private garden. It is now a sextet and frequently welcomes guest performers. Quite amazingly both founder members still play in the band today. The BBQ has now become an all you can eat buffet featuring a salad bar, grilled meat, fresh fish from the local market and a dessert table. This is surely the most relaxing way to while away a Sunday afternoon in the Algarve. Since then, the combination of fine food, cool music, and stunning views has proved to be a winner and weekly event has grown steadily from strength to strength. For many The Jazz lunch takes place every Sunday from and costs 25 per person not including drinks. For reservations, call or info@fortalezadaluz.com Give & Gain The Costume Museum in São Brás de Alportel is hosting a unique charity event on Saturday September 7th from 3pm until 9pm to help create a library for children in Mozambique. 18 WHAT S ON Arise for Alexandre Manuel The Vale do Lobo Art Gallery in collaboration with the Galeria São Mamede is holding an exhibition featuring the work of the artist Alexandre Manuel. The Arise Exhibition features a stunning collection of photographs by Alexandre Manuel. Alexandre uses long exposure techniques to create continuous scenes untouched by time and only framed by traces of human structures to produce photographs with a truly magical atmosphere. The photos in this exhibition explore the natural tension between absence and presence, between man and his place in nature and between the evolution of the landscape and permanence in our lives. The exhibition will be open until September 24th, Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm. Entrance is free. Call for information. Open Air Tunes The Portimão Philharmonic Society will be performing in the town s Manuel Teixeira Gomes Square on September 7th. 24 HEALTH The Healing Facilitator By Marion Saraswati am basically a biodynamic craniosacral I therapist. However, through my other studies of Reiki and biorgonomy amongst other things and through my professional experience, I have developed a personalised method. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy is derived from osteopathy, developed on the basis of the primary respiratory mechanism (PRM). The cerebrospinal fluid has a healing quality. It protects and nourishes the central nervous system. The subtle motion of this fluid can be perceived in all the tissues of the body. It is similar to a very gentle inhalation and exhalation. Hence, it is called the breath of life. Through a very light soft touch, the therapist tunes into this rhythm and pinpoints sources of obstruction. He or she simply assists the PRM to find a new balance. The body can heal itself and the potency of the fluids can permeate all the cells and organs again. The benefits are wide-ranging and can be used as a preventative health measure, to help medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction including migraine, scoliosis, chronic neck and back pain, stress, infantile disorders, emotional, immune, neurovascular and orthopaedic problems. This is what one of my clients had to say Four years ago, I arrived with crutches and screaming in pain but after Marion s treatment I left on my two feet only and feeling relieved, said Claude Rebiffé. For more information please contact Marion on or , marion.saraswati@gmail.com 24 Hypothyroidism - Underactive Thyroid By Niki Medlock The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland with two lobes, wrapped around the trachea (windpipe), behind and below the Adam s apple area. It makes and releases hormones into the bloodstream acting as messengers, affecting cells and tissues all over the body whose main function is to regulate metabolic rate and certain minerals level in the blood. Production of the circulating active hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) increases metabolic rate (the rate at which the cells in your body use energy stored within them) also helping to regulate body temperature, as heat is released when energy is used therefore increasing body temperature. They also help in making proteins, the building blocks of the body s cells and increase the use of the body s fats and glucose stores. Thyroid activity is controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain which is constantly receiving input about the state of bodily functions. Sensing low levels of T3 and T4 or a low metabolic rate it releases the hormone TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) into the bloodstream. This travels to the pituitary gland stimulating secretion of TSH (thyroidstimulating hormone) causing the thyroid to make more T3 and T4 which increases the metabolic rate in the cells. When levels are high the hypothalamus and pituitary gland stop producing hormones which in turn stopping the thyroid from producing T3 and T4. But what happens when this amazing mechanism goes wrong? Find out next month!! Niki Medlock is head nurse at Luzdoc: Creative Transpersonal Therapy By Dr. Carlos de Sousa Creative Transpersonal Therapy is based on the spiritual dimension of human experience and the transcendence of nonordinary experiences and phenomena of consciousness. This type of therapy aims to resolve conflicts and/or traumatic memories which are generally produced in childhood. These memories remain in the subconscious mind for so long they change the mental patterns and increase the likelihood of the emergence of specific pathology. The therapeutic methodology uses, essentially, technical and reprogramming mental deconditioning which modifies the state of mind. The unique results of Creative Transpersonal Therapy allow me to maintain that the origin of a symptom (commonly designated by illness), has to be found in hidden areas of the mind, feelings, consciousness, even though if this disease has been triggered by viruses, bacteria, genetic inheritance, accidents, or other causes. The energy reorganization of a pattern of thought or mental attitude has the capacity to produce identical cell and biological conversion. So, if it is the emotional factor that triggers and aggravates an illness, then the cure of a basic dysfunction is not exclusive of the knowledge, but its association with sensitivity and confidence. We believe this therapy is helping a lot of people all over the planet experts and laymen to change their ways of thinking, being and socialising. Please contact / for more details.

26 HEALTH Pets Mate By Lars Rahmquist thought I might get this topic out there I before the gloomy winter months arrive: the Crab. Not the one you find at Azenho do Mar restaurant, nor the one found in nefarious neighbours pants, but rather the big C, cancer. Cancer got its name from the star sign because of the way it can grow, spreading out like the legs of a crab. There are cancers that are benign, but can grow to sizes that inhibit function, e.g. a lipoma growing in the armpit of a dog will eventually cause lameness. Cancers can also be the nasty (malignant) type. But again, these vary their behaviour. People often have preconceptions about cancer treatment (usually from sad personal experiences). Some malignant cancers in animals can be completely cured, if caught early. I have removed many malignant skin cancers and closed the defect with skin grafting. Attached is a photo of Buug who had skin cancers on his nose and face. They were removed with a big margin and the defect closed lot of you have heard me extol the A virtues of coconut water. It is an all-natural, super-hydrating, fat-free, cholesterol-free, potassium stacked, megaelectrolyte and hangover curing drink!! Besides helping to remove toxins from the body, aiding digestion and boosting metabolism, coconuts have amazing antiviral and anti-fungal properties. Along with the plain and fruit flavoured coconut waters, my personal favourite brand, CHI, now has 2 FANTABULOUS tasting coconut milk drinks! 100% Natural Espresso and 100% Natural Chocolate. The espresso coconut milk is amazing... with skin from over his shoulder hence the funky Mohawk look! Chemotherapy in animals has come a long way too. We use much smaller doses in veterinary oncology than in humans; because we cannot tell them about the side effects. We aim to extend a good quality of life with minimal side effects. We currently have a few patients receiving regular chemo at the clinic for lymphoma and they are happy and waggy-tailed! Cancer is a nasty topic, but if you are worried about a lump or a lesion on your pet, get it to your vet NOW and it might be that they can remove a tumour process before it spreads too far. We Love the Coconut! Advertorial by Meri Hanlin but strangely seems to simply vanish after I open one!? Both milks use the highest quality coconut cream and cocoa or coffee. By adding chicory (aka Inulin, both drinks are a prebiotic which aids in digestion. They are also low in fat and calories. They also contain protein, good fats, vitamins B, C and E. Both are also a rich source of potassium, selenium, calcium and iron. Did I mention they taste AMAZING?! Come on in and ask for a sample! Check us out on Facebook for daily health tips...and some fun too! Harmony Earth-Praia da Luz. Get fit to play sport By Ann de Jongh September is that time of year when new resolutions are made following our holidays, or when it is time to take up a new sport or activity at the start of a new term. Sometimes it can have been a while since we previously exercised, and in the case of some sports it can be years since we last played. Whilst it is great to get back into exercise, you need to remember, if it is something that you have not done for a while, that you need to get fit to play sport not play sport to get fit. The first few sessions are when injury is most likely to occur, as the body is not used to moving in that way anymore. Muscles and joints may have got a bit tighter and with age, we find our body does not move in the same way that it used to. So, before you go ahead and start playing tennis, netball, football, rugby or even golf, prepare your body. Using my favourite analogy of a car, you wouldn t race a car if it had been sat still for a few years and your body is the same. If the sport you are going to do involves running, then start off by going for a few gentle jogs, ensuring that you stretch out afterwards. This way the body will at least have had a run out before you run around the court or pitch as if you were still 16 and you may manage to get out of bed without too much assistance the next morning! 28 BUSINESS & FINANCE Sunday Sunset Chillout By Tom Henshaw You ll find OMARAFADO in a fabulous location - only three minutes by car and probably just five to 10 minutes from Lagos town on foot. You go up the hill to Portelas, 150 metres after passing McDonalds on the left. After experiencing a lovely Tapas dinner during the week, we went up on Sunday to try out their new chill out session. Established in 1979 by Emanuelle and his family, you could not wish for a better location than this restaurant with elevated views of Lagos and surrounding areas. For those amongst us who want to give their parents the best care they can have when they become old and fragile there is hope out here. It is a small family-style care home in a beautiful villa set close to the beach. The friendly, qualified and multilingual staff don t just give elderly people the medical attention they need, they also give them loving care and the nurturing that older people require. One client who suffered a stroke and was poorly cared for in a state care home is making great improvements in regaining his mobility. He could barely speak when he arrived, now he speaks well and entertains the staff with his great sense of humour. One 93-year-old woman who had also suffered a stroke which doctors did not think she would survive is now a lively bundle of energy, who just loves to cuddle up in bed and watch her German TV shows. Live music is available on some Sundays and they offer light snacks, tapas, pancakes, ice cream and drinks including smoothies and cocktails at very reasonable prices, so why not treat yourselves? Call or to book. Home Care For You By Michael Wildmoser She is bedridden due to the stroke but she s mentally and emotionally there again. The oldest of the current clients is a sprightly 103 years old. She still loves to sip her coffee on the balcony enjoying the gentle ocean breeze as the palm leaves sway backwards and forwards against the bluest sky. The care home is located west of Lagos near Burgau right at the beginning of the beautiful natural reserve Costa Vincentina. It offers full care with a 24/7 nurse to give the clients the medical attention needed. In addition to that a doctor does house calls for regular health checks. It is open for either long term residents, but also offers holiday care for clients who need medical attention, yet do not want to miss out on their holiday. Please feel free to call at WCT - We Care Totally - on or mobile The Pigs Head By Robert Hurst The landlord of the Pigs Head in Burgau waxes lyrical about his claim to have a solution to the current recession. It s dead easy. The other day I was watching my missus rolling out pastry for the Tuesday pie night, and as she did so I couldn t help but notice how some sections, quite distant from others would then be suddenly placed directly upon each other, then compressed. And this continued as she rolled and repeatedly folded the mass. We could do that with time I thought, you know fold it. And in doing so it would never stand still long enough for a recession to take hold. I mean it wouldn t change a deal on the Friday night quiz as most of the questions are historical or timeless and the same teams would win anyway. And during Tuesdays live music nights people always like the older stuff and besides the eclectic mixture would hold its appeal as time changed back and forth. Money shouldn t be an issue either as people on entry would be carrying today s money and as the evening progressed fluctuations would balance out. And think of the sporting benefits - all those happy Leeds and Liverpool fans again. Moreover moods towards our loved ones may undergo a renaissance, which can only be a plus, so why not pop down here some time. Who knows - you may even bump into yourself on the way in on the way out. Oh, and don t forget, Sunday lunch would remain unaltered, still going ahead between 12noon and 8pm. 28

For more information please contact Rosie and Laurie on or If you are looking for something that can really hold its own in full sun, then try Russelia equisetiformis. Commonly known as the firecracker or coral plant. This small to medium shrub makes an amazing display featuring masses of long cascading tubular bright red flowers and fine asparagus fern-like foliage. It loves full sun and tolerates most soils and watering regimes. But should not become waterlogged or subjected to frost - although it usually grows back in spring. Potted firecrackers look best planted on their own, making useful gap fillers to move around as required while those planted in borders should be given plenty of space as demonstrated by the one pictured here. Portions of the plant may die back from time to time, but can be easily pruned off hard ready for new growth to appear. Here are some other easily obtainable nononsense plants to consider for pots and planters in full sun. Small: Cuphea ignis, Mammillaria varieties of cacti: Agave Victoria reginae, Agave macroacantha, Euphorbia milii, most varieties of Sedums, Cuphea ignis, Haworthia, Stapelia, Day lilies and Asparagus densiflorus. Medium to large size plants include: Agapanthus africanus, Ferocactus varieties, Hebe varieties, Euryops pectinatus, Streptosolen jamesonii, Teucrium fruticans, Tradescantia, pallida, Crassula ovate, Aeonium arboretum, Dipladenia sanderi, Strelitzia reginae, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Pereskia grandiflora, Some citrus particularly calamondin and kumquat, Chamaerops humilis and Hibbertia scandens. Choosing large plants that will not outgrow containers too quickly can be difficult but here are a few tried and tested ones: Metrosideros excelsus, Dracaena draco, Yucca elephantipes, Plumeria (Frangipani), Cordyline australis, Ficus nitidia, Schefflera arboricola, Strelitzia nicolay and S. augustifolia, Aloe arborescence, Phyllostachys aurea and Hibiscus coccinea.
