1 Special points of interest: Church Community News - pg. 3 Prayer Requests - pg. 6 Church Calendar Inside this issue: Spring Flea Market - another great success Hymnal Dedication Form Summer Search Puzzle Pg. 2 Pg. 4 Pg. 5 Summer Worship Schedule There has been some discussion on whether to go to a 9:30am worship time, or if the time should stay at 10:30am throughout the summer months. The decision will be made shortly. Please check our website in June for updated information: Editor: CAB office@1stpresrahway.org Volume 6 Issue 6 June 2015 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH From Pastor Erin... R emember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it. Exodus 20:8-11 Nobody likes a grouchy friend, partner, or co-worker, do they? I know I ve been on both ends of the stick the one who is grouchy and the one who experiences his/her sunny behavior. What makes us feel so out of touch? What makes us so tired? I truly believe it is the sin of the illusion of being busy. Oh how we fill our time with meetings, events, running the kids from place to place, and errands. No wonder we are cranky, we don t get time to breathe. I should say, we don t make time to breathe. We all fall victim to the I don t have time to do anything feeling, even me. We lose so much of ourselves, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, when we don t take time out to breathe. I visited the Jewish Museum in New York City a year ago. During our tour the guide explained to us the cultural and spiritual significance to the Sabbath, an entire day to rest and give thanks to God. I was impressed by the ritual of the Sabbath, which includes the lighting of a candle to signify a change in time and beautiful silver settings for the Sabbath meal. Our guide shared with us that many people believe that if God gives you a commandment you should observe it beautifully. Our brothers and sisters and faith surely leave us with a lot to think about. As you go into summer mode with vacations, getaways, and long afternoons on the porch, I invite you to consider what it means to have a Sabbath every week. How do you need to rearrange your life if one day a week was simply about recharging your soul and body by building relationships with God, yourself, and those you love? As you answer these questions, I invite you to keep in mind Sabbath reminds us that: 1. God is our creator and we are the created. (Genesis 1-2) 2. God wants to re-create in us. (John 10:10) 3. We are more than what we do. We are human beings. 4. We cannot, nor are we expected, to do life alone. (Psalm 46:10) May you keep the Sabbath and be re-created in the Spirit!
2 Page 2 Thank you, Lord, for a wonderful sunny day! And as a result of all who pitched in and helped, we raised the fabulous amount of - $6, The funds have been deposited into our general account; it will help the church continue it s programs and outreach. Thanks to all who donated items, worked at various jobs, and baked. Flo and her bakers raised over $ on the bake sale and almost sold out of the goodies. We tried to count the many helpers who generously gave of their time, but lost count at approximately 50 wonderful, hard-working people and youth, who did an outstanding job setting up, selling, and cleaning up. We could never have raised this amount of money without everyone s cooperation and participation. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful church family, who can come together and make this successful. Our Fall Flea Market will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015, from 9am-3pm, and will feature fall items, along with the regular sale items. Please save the date! Donations can be dropped off at the church office Monday through Thursday from 9:30am-3:00pm. If you need a pick up, please call the church office at , and we will try to arrange one. Again, we can no longer accept VCRs, VHS tapes, TVs, encyclopedias, computers, or used clothing. Fortunately, our flea markets have become a huge financial success and help us meet our budget and continue our programs. Please plan on helping in the fall so we can have another successful endeavor. A special thank you to all the people who work year-long on getting ready for the event, they continue to be AMAZING. Mark your calendars for September 19, 2015, and plan to give as much time as you can for setting up, working the sale, and cleaning up. Childcare (if needed) and food will be provided.
3 VOLUME 6 ISSUE 6 Page 3 I want to thank everyone for the wonderful luncheon that was held for me. The cards, gifts, and fellowship given to me were greatly appreciated. The past eight years have been amazing, and I hope to spend many more years at First Pres. I think it s going to take a few years just to finish all of the M&Ms alone, however, the peanut M&Ms were gone within a week, so I m working on it!
