The change in the weather is the catalyst for so much of what we enjoy different foods that seem a necessity with the advent of cooler temperatures, (Hello, hot chocolate!); the sweet smells of Fall: the turning leaves, the apple trees, the wet earth, the wood smoke; did we mention football? It seems that mixed in with the reds and golds of autumn leaves in the Northwest, we also have the college navy, action green and wolf gray of a certain football team. All these wonderful things to enjoy, all the different things to do, are actually very good for you, especially when you are enjoying them with the people around you! Dr. Oz Octobers says there is nothing healthier than having friends. Author Robert Brault says, It s not about finding fun things to do. It s about finding someone in whose company, it s all fun. AUTUMN crunching in the leaves apple picking CIDER & DONUTS listening to the wind blow HOT CHOCOLATE FOOTBALL Staying active and socially engaged is one of the most important things we can do as we age to maintain our quality of life. Just having coffee with your neighbor will benefit both of you. By keeping your brain constantly engaged in activity and interaction you are sharpening your mind and reducing your risk of cognitive decline. wood smoke & leaf mold BRILLIANT COLORS The social calendars at Encore Communities are designed to keep you engaged in every season whether we are out looking at Fall leaves or simply having coffee with a friend. Enjoy the pictures & the plans for Fall fun on these pages; maybe you should join us! Peggy Reece

Whether you think of Sunday as an end or a beginning to your week, it s a day to enjoy time with family and friends. Wake up with Sunday Stretch; be inspired with hymns and readings; play a game in the Town Square; and whet your appetite for supper with a sing-a-long and charades. Life is good at The Ridge. One of the many who turned out for the Walk to End Alzheimer s; Encore Communities was the top fundraising team with $8300 raised. Way to go, Team! Page 4 Autumn is a second spring, when every leaf is a flower. Autumn paints in colors summer has never seen.
5 Delicious Autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the Earth seeking the successive Autumns. ~George Eliot Two annual autumn events to which we look forward: the Walk to End Alzheimer s and the From the Bench concert performed at Gateway Fellowship on their pipe organ by members Celebrating nurse Kathy Taylor s Retirement after 18 loving years of service with the residents of Encore Communities. After a lovely sack lunch provided by Chef Sarah, Dr. Phyl sat with the performers while awaiting the concert. A fabulous foursome at the Walk to End Alzheimer s. Encore Team Chairman Ben Pfeiffer brought together many successful events to lead our team to top fundraiser, besides raising a substantial amount on his own. I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne Page 5

8 12295 Schold Place NW Silverdale, WA HERE S TO YOUR HEALTH! Peggy Reece Refresh in the Fall Twice a year we have to reset our body clocks when we reset our other clocks for Daylight Savings Time. This fall, remember to Fall Back! and set your clocks for the November 4 start of Standard Time. Somehow we trick ourselves into thinking that we get more day when we move those clock hands in the Spring. In the Fall, when it gets dark by five and it feels like our day should be over, no amount of tricking can prevent us from thinking about hibernation! Time is actually important in taking care of our health new studies show that when we eat, when we don t eat, when we take our medications, when and how much we sleep, can all work to our advantage. The 12 or so hours from supper to breakfast, when we are NOT eating, are the hours when our body recharges, burns fatty acids, reduces blood pressure, increases insulin sensitivity and reduces inflammation that affects our brain and other body systems. Inflammation is an antagonist for asthma, arthritis, cancer, heart disease and diabetes, but resting your body those 12 hours reduces inflammation. You may ask, what am I going to do for those 12 hours I m not eating? Well, sleeping is the most important thing you can do to recharge your entire system, especially the brain, which repairs and renews tissue, cells, other biochemicals, organizes thought and other important housekeeping tasks. The amount and quality of sleep we get is directly proportional to the amount and quality of the next day s productivity. So your idea of hibernation is actually good, for sleep is the very best way to reboot, recharge and refresh your system. October s poplars are flaming torches lighting the way to winter. ~Bair
