In August there will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board...choose to bring a dessert, side or salad! PRAYER BLANKETS Thank you to everyone who has come forth and volunteered. You are a great bunch of people. We will be meeting on the following dates: Cutters--August 4 th and Sept 2 nd at 1:00 p.m....tyers-- August 18 th and Sept 29th at 6:30 p.m. If you would like to tie in the afternoons, feel free to come on over once we have started getting some of the blankets cut. TBA Sunday, September 28 Prayer Blanket Dedication 8:00 & 9:30 am Please mark your calendar Lord of Life is mentioned in the August 2014 issue of The Lutheran, in the Metropolitan Chicago Synod insert. An article reports on the gathering we hosted in April, for the Lutheran School of Theology Chicago Guild. Members of Lord of Life and other congregations met and heard the stories of several of the international students at the seminary. LOL member, Jan Stage, is quoted in the article. I am pleased to tell you that Lord of Life gifted these students with Prayer Blankets so that they would feel wrapped in our prayers. You will want to check out the article when you get some time. I will post it on the bulletin board in our gathering area, too. Pr. Linda
2 Page 2 ATTENTION: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES! Handyman skills are appreciated but not required just bring a sack lunch and a willingness to help! HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Here s an opportunity to work at a Habitat for Humanity site in the Elgin area. The date is Saturday, September 6. We will meet at church on Saturday morning and carpool to the site, returning to LOL by late afternoon. Handyman skills are appreciated but not required just bring a sack lunch and a willingness to help! Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex. FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN Members of Lord of Life will have two opportunities to volunteer at the Schaumburg site of FMSC. We will work as teams, packing nutritious meals for hungry and malnourished children around the world. The dates are: Saturday, September 6, 4:30 pm 6:30 pm Monday, September 8, 6:00 pm 7:30 pm There are sign-up sheets in the narthex. We have spots reserved for 15 volunteers for each shift. Children are welcome if accompanied by parents (3rd grade and older please). Don t miss out on this fun opportunity to make a difference! Wedding Congratulations Congratulations to Valinda (Bartow) and Michael Sowatzke, son of Katy & Jim Sowatzke, on their marriage. Their wedding took place in Ottumwa, Iowa on Friday, June 13 th. Valinda & Michael will reside in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Congratulations to Kimberly (Reynolds) and Paul Basich on celebrating the Affirmation of their Civil Marriage. The ceremony took place at Lord of Life on Saturday, June 28. Blessings and best wishes to both couples! Linda Covey Not Present: Cathy Thoma, Bob Hossa Guest: Del Neel and Mark Puchalski Meeting called to order at 7:05 Jim D. led us in devotions. Bequest We have been contacted by Northern Trust regarding a gift of $40,000 from The Eleanor Swanson Declaration of Trust. The following resolution to accept this gift was passed unanimously. Therefore, it is resolved that the gift is hereby accepted by LORD OF LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 119 West Wise Rod, Schaumburg, Illinois It is further resolved that Linda S. Covey, acting as the Pastor of this organization is authorized, on behalf of LORD OF LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH, to: (1) accept payment, (2) execute receipts and other documents, and (3) receive notices, make and communicate decisions as necessary to facilitate administration of the gift. The $40,000 is to be added to our Bequest Fund as an unrestricted gift. COUNCIL MINUTES from May 22, 2014: Discussed and approved as read. be shipped out on July 7, White Sox Game: 22 people are going on July 6, 2014 NEW BUSINESS: Election of Officers Took a verbal vote motioned by Jim for the following offices. President: Don Smith Vice President: Jim Dobson Secretary: Julie Mulherin Treasurer: Bill Lundeberg Financial Secretary: Will be discussed next meeting Don motioned to nominate to Barb James as Assistant Treasurer effective July 1, The motion passed unanimously. Suggestion: There was a suggestion to put motion-censored lights in the bathroom to make sure that lights are not left on overnight. This will be passed onto property. Church picnic: Currently, we don t have any group in charge of setting up a picnic. We hope that people will come together organize this picnic. Maybe each committee or groups of people could work together. (One committee could do each part of the planning. i.e. games, raffle, set-up etc.) Endowment: These members will be up for renewal in 2014: Jim Dobson, Barb Petterson, Sandy Tabick and Bill Luthard who will replace Bob Steffenson. For 2015 these members will be up for renewal: Del Neel, Wayne Giesel, and Bob Faust COMMITTEE REPORTS DISCUSSED: None, due to summer PASTOR S REPORT: Thanks to Barb James and Jim Shephard for the time on Council ON GOING BUSINESS: Building and grounds: Every Saturday people can help around the church from Colors have been chosen for the Dryvit that can be done soon as weather permitting.
