3 Philippians 2:5-8 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to

4 the point of death even to death on a cross.

5 2. Jesus continues to serve. I Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God and one mediator between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, Himself human, who gave Himself a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time.

6 Hebrews 7:24-25 But because He remains forever, He holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore, He is always able to save those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.

7 WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM SCRIPTURE ABOUT OUR MANDATE TO SERVE?

8 1. Jesus demonstrated the service that He desired. John 13:12-17 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to them, Do you know what I have done for you? You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have

9 washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you. I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

10 2. Service leads to greatness. Matthew 20:25-28

11 3. Serve others out of your freedom. Galatians 5:13 For you were called to be free, brothers; only don t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. Romans 14:1-15

12 4. Use your gifts to minister to others with the goal of glorifying God. I Peter 4:7-10 Now the end of all things is near; therefore, be serious and disciplined for prayer. Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one

13 another without complaining. Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of God. Romans 12:3-8 I Corinthians 12:4-10

14 Our service should ALWAYS glorify God.

15 HOW IS SERVICE LIVED OUT IN YOUR LIFE?

16 1. Pointing others to Christ. Evangelism- reaching the lost John 1:35-42 Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, Look! The Lamb of God! The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. When

17 Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, What are you looking for? They said to Him, Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are You staying? Come and you ll see, He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning. Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, was

18 one of the two who heard John and followed Him. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, we have found the Messiah! (which means Anointed One), and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas (which means Rock).

19 2. Helping with spiritual growth. Edification- building the body Ephesians 4:15-16 But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head Christ. From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the

20 growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part.
