Jesus, our Lord, Emmanuel, while we are waiting, come. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Joyous God, creator of laughter and beauty, pleasure and joy, we confess our need of your delight and insight. We see longer lists and fewer days, harried clerks and impatient customers, busy schedules and hurried conversations, fewer dollars and greater needs. It is easy to slip under a gloomy cloud of night. O Dayspring, restore a childlike wonder and a shepherd s sense of excitement. Open our ears to angel choruses and fill our hearts with Mary-like joy. Put our lists in proper order and our days in service to you, joyous Creator, loving God. (A moment of silent reflection) PRAYER RESPONSE O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Number 88 v. 6 O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death s dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. ASSURANCE OF GOD S LOVING FORGIVENESS Friends, hear the good news. As we wait for the birth of baby Jesus and the return of our Savior, we are already forgiven. Thanks be to God! Amen. *SONG OF PRAISE Gloria in Excelsis Deo! HEARING GOD S WORD CHILDREN S CONVERSATION (11:00) Young children may leave for Godly Play after the conversation French Carol Rachel Mastin READING THE PROPHETS Selections from Psalm 65 SUNG RESPONSE Prepare the Way, O Zion Number 106 Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion; and to you shall vows be performed, O you who answer prayer! By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance, O God of our salvation; you are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. By your strength you established the mountains, you are girded with might. You silence the roaring of the seas, the tumult of the peoples. The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy.

2 THE WORD IN MUSIC Sing Now With Great Rejoicing J. S. Bach PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION God, as we find ourselves in the midst of Advent, we don't want to miss its beautiful meaning. We want to soak in the wonder and mystery of the Incarnation. We desire to be drawn into the story of Jesus' coming. Help us to see, hear, and truly experience the truth of this season. Amen. GOSPEL READING Luke 1: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! SERMON Assurance When Your Life Is Turned Upside Down RESPONDING WITH GRATITUDE AND FAITH PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Come Lord Jesus, come and hear our prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OUR OFFERING A MUSICAL OFFERING Veni Emmanuel J. Wayne Kerr *SONG OF PRAISE As with Gladness Men of Old Number 150 v. 3 As they offered gifts most rare at thy manger, rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin s alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee, our heavenly king. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION Holy God, we come to this warm and colorful season of Advent with expectant and thankful hearts. We welcome the renewed promise of your love, joy, and righteousness breaking into our world. We offer these gifts and the witness of our lives in gratitude for all you have done, are doing, and will do. This we pray in Jesus name. Amen. *ADVENT CAROL My Soul Cries Out with a Joyful Shout Number 100 *BLESSING *CHORAL RESPONSE Choral Amen Daniel Gawthrop *POSTLUDE Toccata in D Johann Kittel

3 SCRIPTURE READING Luke 1: In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, Greetings, 29 favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. 34 Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God. 38 Then Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. WELCOME! We re glad you joined us for worship today. We are a diverse and engaging community of faith seeking and serving Christ to make a difference. We pray that you experience Christ s presence in our midst and that his presence will sustain you in the week ahead. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME IN WORSHIP!
