2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission The purpose of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is to witness for Christ by uniting all people in a common bond of Christian fellowship through worship, hospitality, service, concern, and evangelism and to keep our hearts open to new possibilities. Background Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran church in Connecticut, a historic building and community that continues to be a place of faith, love, and service for all in our community. Originally founded by German-speaking immigrants to New Haven and meeting in the rooms over a storefront, the present historic building was purchased by the church in With thousands of worshippers, mostly drawn from the factories in New Haven, Trinity was the center of German life in New Haven from the 1880s through the 1950s. While other congregations fled New Haven during the tumult of the 1960s, Trinity stayed downtown and opened its doors to minister to all, reflecting the diversity of the city. From multiple services and thousands of members in the 1950s, Trinity now counts 60 worshippers each week from every background, race, and ethnicity, and hundreds more each week in an extended community of all those who make use of the church as a community meeting space and place for serving others. Impact Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church serves as a vital part of the Greater New Haven community, and our impact spreads from our corner at Orange and Wall Streets across our neighborhood to Greater New Haven. In the past several years, Trinity has continued its tradition of neighborhood hospitality, evangelical outreach, and community service. Trinity continues a long tradition of serving as a meeting space for dozens of community groups. Twelve-step groups, support groups, ministries with homeless persons, the Educational Center for the Arts, and Yale's Baroque Opera and Institute for Sacred Music all utilize our space regularly. Reaching out to our community's spiritual needs, Trinity hosted a free exhibit for the community, "The Passion and the Shroud," exhibiting a replica of the famous Shroud of Turin, drawing hundreds of pilgrims from all over Connecticut, and continued our innovative sidewalk Ash Wednesday services. Trinity hosted various youth groups from around New England looking for an immersive experience serving others in an urban environment. We continue our partnerships with organizations across New Haven and across the world, feeding the hungry in our city, educating children in the developing world, visiting the sick and elderly in our community, caring for the human needs of seafarers in the Port of New New Haven, and being known as a beacon of hope in New Haven. In the 154th year of the Congregation, we look forward to continuing our mission and ministry in New Haven. Needs We are in need of financial partnerships and/or named gifts towards the maintenance, historical restoration, continual upkeep of our landmark Victorian Gothic building. We are in need of continued maintenance and restoration of our historic Cassavant organ that will allow the organ to continue to support worship and sacred music in downtown New Haven. We are interested in working with experts in fundraising and public relations, who can help us better connect with donors in New Haven around the positive impact we have within our community. CEO Statement Trinity Lutheran Church is a unique Christian congregation with a heart for faith in God and love for others, located in the heart of New Haven since Trinity has a long 150-year history of deep involvement with our neighborhood and city that continues today. From our famous lunchtime forums and Strawberry Festivals of days gone by, to our current hosting of dozens of community, arts, religious, and educational groups, Trinity provides a vital community space at the heart of our city. Our congregation continues its outward focus on serving others, even as we exist as a diverse community of people from every background imaginable united by a common faith and mission in our community. I often tell people, "If you want to worship next to professors and homeless people, longtime New Haveners and new immigrants, people from Newhalville and Guilford, people who will pray with you but in their own language, Trinity Lutheran might be the place for you."trinity's doors are open, and we are excited to build relationships and partnerships with all our neighbors in Greater New Haven as we continue our mission over the next 150 years. 2
3 Board Chair Statement I was only 13 when my family became members of Trinity in While some might be impressed by my 49 years of membership, it is shorter than that of several current members of our congregation, and represents only a small piece in the 150 year history of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Trinity has gone through several evolutions during its 150 history. Founded as a small neighborhood church by local German immigrants in 1865, it grew into a thriving congregation in the 1940's and 50's with a local membership. In the 60's and 70's the church's membership changed as many members moved out of New Haven to the local suburbs. In the 70's and 80's Trinity's membership waned as many members and their families moved further away from New Haven and transferred their membership to local neighborhood churches. Recently the membership at Trinity has stabilized and is composed of a mixture of urban (New Haven) dwellers and sub-urban members like myself. Trinity has always had a strong sense of mission. From its founding up through the 1950's the mission was almost exclusively an inward looking mission focusing its energies and resources on programs to benefit the members. In the late 50's the mission began looking outward through an evangelical outreach program called Fishermen which made home visits to visiting parishioners. In the 1960's Rev. Frederick Auman who served Trinity from was a driving force in the initial formation of Hospice and the Downtown Cooperative Ministry. Trinity also hosted monthly Downtowner's Luncheons, which attracted local businessmen (sorry but in the 60's it was businessmen) for what we would today call a Lunch & Learn program. Today, nearly all of Trinity's mission is outward looking. Trinity is beginning its 13th year as the host for Agape Homeless Ministry and serves as the meeting place for multiple Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotic Anonymous and other self-help groups. Trinity has served as a classroom for ACES Educational Center for the Arts, and the Yale School of Music. Trinity has also served as a performance location for several local music groups including the New Haven Chorale and the Yale Baroque Opera Project. We have also served as a host location for the Connecticut District of the National Council Auditions Program, sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera. Going forward Trinity faces challenges that are not uncommon in most urban churches. It is a struggle for most downtown churches to maintain an active membership. Many parishioners find it much more convenient to worship at local churches closer to home. Downtown churches like Trinity, while working to retain suburban members, also need to provide a place of worship that welcomes our neighbors including students from local colleges who make Trinity their home congregation for their time in New Haven... Service Categories Primary Organization Category Secondary Organization Category Religion- Related / Protestant Religion- Related / Christianity Areas Served New Haven West Haven Bethany East Haven Guilford Woodbridge rth Haven Hamden Wallingford International Located in downtown New Haven at the corner of Orange and Wall Streets, Trinity draws worshipers and participants in our congregation's life from our immediate neighborhood, every neighborhood of New Haven, and the suburbs of Greater New Haven including West Haven, Bethany, Easy Haven, Guilford, Woodbridge, rth Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, and through a large network of former worshipers and Internet friends, into every corner of the world. 3
4 Programs Programs Worship Description Bi-Weekly offering of traditional Lutheran worship services, with ordained Lutheran pastor, professional organist and choir director, in the beautiful sacred setting of the church. Budget $150, Category Religion, General/Other / Christianity Population Served General/Unspecified / / Program is linked to organization s mission and strategy Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Yes Short term success will be measured by an increased average weekly worship attendance, from 63 to 68 per week. As Christians, worship makes us who we are. Our goal continues to be excellence in preaching, sacred music, liturgy, and increased participation across different populations and in number of attendees. Continual assessment by the church's Worship and Music Committee. For 150 years Trinity has stewarded Word and Sacrament in the heart of New Haven. Our most recent successes have consisted of an increased number of affirmation of baptisms, infant baptisms, and inquirers at Trinity which has increased the number of new worshipers by over a dozen in the last year. Sunday School and Confirmation Ministries Description At the heart of our congregation is the formation of children and young adults in the narrative of the Christian faith, helping them see themselves caught up in the story of God's love for the world, and how they can embody that in their daily lives. From Pre-K through high school, through celebrating milestones and with age-appropriate materials, curriculum, service, and mentoring relationships, Christian education is a key element to our congregational life. Budget $1, Category / Population Served / / 4
5 Seafarers Ministry Description Partnering with NYC-based Seafarers and International House, we help provide pastoral care and religious services for seafarers onboard ships in New Haven harbor. Far from home, and mostly unable to step foot on dry-land due to visa restrictions, we provide listening ears, internet/phone access, and religious services as requested. Budget $1, Category / Population Served / / Space for Community Groups Description Occupying 1/4 of a city block, Trinity has significant meeting space that we make available to community groups from across the city--everything from girl scouts and choirs to 12-step groups and homeless ministries make use of our facility, which is open by arrangement 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. The capital costs for heating, repairing, and insuring such a "community center" continue to be a challenge, but we are committed to being a space for the larger community. Budget $30, Category / Population Served / / Endowment Fund Description A professionally-managed fund, with the goal of capital preservation and conservative growth, aimed at the long-term capital/plant/infrastructure needs to preserve and maintain Trinity Lutheran Church. These funds are generally not accessed or spent, except by committee and congregational approval to balance annual budgets and/or pay for major capital works necessary for the preservation and utility of the church building. Budget $3, Category Religion, General/Other / Christianity Population Served General/Unspecified / / Program is linked to organization s mission and strategy Long Term Success Examples of Program Success Yes In the last several years we have minimized withdrawls from this fund, thus preserving capital for the long-term needs of our historic building. In FY 2014, we withdrew only $8,169 from this fund to balance our yearly budget. 5
