3 Let us Celebrate the Month of the Blessed Mother as a Parish! Everyone is encouraged to carve time out of your busy schedule this month to dedicate some time in prayer to Mary, the Mother of God, and the Mother of the Church. The parish will be offering ample opportunities to help. Pray the Rosary There is always our usual time after 8:00 am Mass during the week to join our rosary group in praying Our Lady s favorite prayer with others. But parents can also teach the rosary to their children at home. Make sure everyone in your family has a rosary and carry one around with you. Pray a decade whenever you can. Relearn and pray the mysteries! Part of the formation program for our second grade Communion Class was a rosary-making session. Each one was unique and beautiful in its own way. Use those rosaries and wear them out in prayer! (Ask Fr. John some time about broken rosaries they do wear out eventually!) Go to our patron St. Luke or to St. John in the New Testament and pray through the scriptures that speak about the mystery of God in the Blessed Mother s life. We can pray and meditate on the passages that reveal to us Mary as a believer, as someone who is faithful, and who like us, experienced the joys and sorrows of life. We have our annual May Crowning this Tuesday, May 1, at 9:15 am Mass with our school children. Pray for good weather so that our special outdoor procession component can be part of the morning program. Join us for our Holy Hour next Saturday, May 5. It always begins with the rosary right after the 8:00 Mass. Dedicate your family and yourself to the Mary, the Blessed Mother by doing the Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Prayers and devotions outlined nicely in St. Louis de Montfort s small book True Devotion to Mary (a free ebook version is available at This 33-day process of prayer and reflection has been found to be most rewarding spiritually for countless people over the years. Do the work of prayer and reap the benefits and peace it can bring to your life. New this year On the weekend of May 19-20, we plan to do a consecration of our entire parish to the Blessed Mother with special prayers to be offered by all of us at the conclusion of each Sunday Mass. Of course, it helps if we do some of the praying with any of the above devotions ahead of time, so I encourage you to do that. New Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary On Monday, May 21, we will celebrate all of our morning Masses with prayers for the new Memorial designated by Pope Francis, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Since this is something new for the Church, special readings and prayers have been selected to help us celebrate what the Blessed Mother means to us as people of faith and how appropriate it is to do so the day immediately after Pentecost when the Church emerged through the power of the Holy Spirit since we know that the Blessed Mother gathered with the disciples in the Upper Room. Come celebrate and pray with us as we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. May her example in seeking out and doing God s will in her life inspire us to follow Christ more fervently and effectively. ~Fr. 4 May Crowning This Week Our parish children will be honoring Mary, Queen of Heaven, this Tuesday, May 1, with the traditional May Crowning. St. Luke School students will start the day with Mass at 9:15 am. All parishioners are invited to join the ceremony in church to celebrate Mary, Our Blessed Mother. Attention, All Liturgical Ministers: Time to Check the Schedule Again We are beginning the process of preparing the Liturgical Ministry Schedule for the next period from June 1 through September 9. Please do the following by May 9: Sign on to the Ministry Scheduler website Enter the dates you are not available for this period. Check and, if necessary, change your Service Preferences for this period. Check and update your address and phone number with any changes. If you enter your information on May 10 or later, you will find that data has already been reviewed by computer and processed on May 9. Anything entered after May 9 will not be used or read by the computer. This means that if you enter data on May 10 or after, due to the late entry, you more than likely will have been scheduled on your can t serve date and you will have to look for a substitute. Please enter your data by May 9, not later! If you are scheduled for a Mass and you can t attend, YOU will need to contact others in your ministry for a substitute. Do not send an to your coordinator (Carol, Patty, Tom, Gina, or Joe) asking them to find a substitute for you. And, remember, if you wait until the day before to start making calls, you may not find a substitute. Then we will need YOU to fulfill your duty as scheduled. Questions? Contact Carol at the Rectory, Adoration Next Saturday Everyone is invited for our monthly time of prayer and Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament next Saturday, May 5. Right after the 8:00 Mass, the rosary will be prayed. Then the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for silent prayer, and adoration will continue until 9:15 when Benediction will be offered. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available immediately after Mass. 6 Prime Timers St. Luke School News The Prime Timers thoroughly enjoyed their guided tour of the Donna Castellanos exhibit at the Elmhurst Art Museum (pictured below), and they recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary art. After two trips in April, the Prime Timers are taking the month of May off. The Bridge Group, of course, will continue its semi-monthly meetings on the second and fourth Monday of the month. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and you may notice small pinwheels planted around St. Luke s and many other buildings to highlight the need to protect young people from all forms of violence, intolerance, and indifference. St. Luke s Domestic Violence Outreach Ministry Committee invites everyone to pray for the safekeeping of all children in our community and beyond as well as the healing of all those touched by abuse in the past. Join In Prayer with the Pope Pope Francis invites Catholics around the world to remember a special intention in their prayers each month. Prayers for this month of May are requested for the Mission of Laity: That the lay faithful may fulfill their specific mission by responding with creativity to the challenges that face the world today First Graders Learn Tips on Saving and Investing St. Luke School s first grade class had a visitor from the Dominican Econ Center at Dominican University who gave a lesson on The Best Way to Save Money. This presentation was part of the class s Economics Unit in Social Studies, which included a discussion about the elements of wants, needs, goods, and services. The best way to save money and keep it safe, the class learned, is to put it in a bank. The Econ Center works with schools throughout Chicago to improve the level of economic education from kindergarten through high school so students can become knowledgeable consumers, prudent savers and investors, and effective participants in the global economy.
